Volcanoes - Earth Science
Volcanoes are a super fun topic, for those restless days before half term. My kiddos have been clamouring for more science experiments, so I downloaded a fab volcano lesson plan from Twinkl to set up the context for a classic vinegar and baking soda experiment!
After viewing the PowerPoint presentation, some YouTube videos, and simulating tectonic plate movement with scraps of card, the kids glued some cute lift-the-flap Earth layers into their science notebooks and did some sequencing worksheets.
Playdough, plastic cups, and paper plates were used to construct volcano models. (The paper plates are essential for limiting the mess, during the actual experiment.) I measured the ingredients into the plastic cups, and the kids stirred them together. Then, they took turns to pour the crucial vinegar in, for the classic faux lava eruption! They absolutely loved that part. :)
Finally, they coloured and labelled some volcano diagrams for their notebooks, and added a photo of their erupting volcano models.
All in all, a good day. Taking the experiment outside was also a winner - less risk of mess, although the paper plates fulfilled their role even better than I’d hoped!
The Day The Crayons Quit
I’m working on a bunch of topics with my kids, this term, but one of the most fun is definitely The Day The Crayons Quit! I love this cute picture book, and it’s ability to be transformed into all sorts of cross-curricula activities.
Starting with the crucial group reading of the book itself, we’ve moved on to a simple comprehension worksheet, letter writing exercise, themed word search, and a fab crayon box craftivity. (I also had an extra ‘what do you like to draw with [whatever] crayon’ worksheet, for early finishers.)
You can pick up a free copy of my The Day The Crayons Quit packet at TpT. The letter writing exercises have been a particular hit, as this story has really captured the kids’ imaginations.
I used the gorgeous free clipart by Be Merry Clipart and Creations to print off a colourful crayon box and some blank crayons, which were coloured in and mounted on card stock.
Moving forward, I’m planning on some PSHE work on feelings, which I’ll adapt to suit my composite class level. Then, we’ll have a look at how crayons are made, before moving on to some science work and a review of states of matter (liquid to solid).
All in all, it could be a worse return after half term! ;)
My prize from the #12daysofchristmas National Stationery Week competition. I ❤️ Staedtler pens. 😄🎄🎁
Ho Ho Ho. Tooth Fairy time again. Am reliably informed that the "fluffy tooth" is more important than actual cold hard cash, so I've duly panic knitted. Tip: whatever you do for the first child's first tooth will follow you till you die. Fact. :( lol #toothfairy #knitting #crochet #thingsmomsdo

Winterfall Scarf & Pattern
Recently, I took on a challenge to design a new scarf for winter. I chose 2 complimentary shades of a fab wool mix, from the awesome CosyWool yarn store, which represent the changing colours of Autumn (Fall) to Winter. The stylised leaves represent the last leaf falling, marking the end of Autumn.
The scarf is essentially 160 rows of broken rib stitch, or 80 'pairs' of broken rib as it is always worked in multiples of 2 rows. This makes it super easy to visually keep track of how many rows you’ve worked; just count the ridges. Halfway through, the 2 colours merge before switching to the new solid colour. If that doesn’t appeal to you, simply change immediately to yarn B after the 80th row.
You will need 2 balls of Cygnet Grousemoor Chunky, in Fawn 871 and Bark 445, 10mm and 5mm straight needles, darning needle, white cotton thread, and sewing needle. There will be enough yarn leftover to add some fringing, if you wish, or to whip up a small matching accessory e.g. corsage or brooch. No complex stitches, so it’s perfect for advanced beginners; knit, purl, increase, decrease, and yarn overs. Go on - rock those needles! :)
Scarf Pattern
With yarn A held doubled, cast on 14 stitches (long tail cast on) to 10mm straight needles.
Work 80 rows of broken rib 2 as follows:
Odd rows: k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2 Even rows: k14
Make a slip knot with yarn B and attach to working needle.
With one strand of yarn A and one strand of yarn B, work 2 rows of broken rib stitch. With the other 2 strands of yarn, work 2 rows of broken rib stitch.
Drop yarn A, and continue with yarn B for another 76 rows of broken rib stitch.
Bind off, purl-wise - not too tightly - and weave in all ends with a darning needle.
Make 2 appliqué leaves, from the pattern below, one in each yarn colour, and use cotton thread to securely sew them to the ends of the scarf. The leaf should span 10 rows of scarf, centred on the middle rib, with the lower tip starting about 8 rows from the edge of the scarf.
Leaf Pattern
With 5mm straight needles, cast on 2 stitches.
Row 1: kfb, k1 Row 2: p3 Row 3: k1, yo, k1, yo, k1 Row 4: p5 Row 5: k2, yo, k1, yo, k2 Row 6: p7 Row 7: k3, yo, k1, yo, k3 Row 8: p9 Row 9: k9 Row 10: p2tog, p5, p2tog Row 11: k7 Row 12: p2tog, p3, p2tog Row 13: k5 Row 14: p2tog, p1, p2tog Row 15: k3tog TBL
Cut your yarn and cinch the last stitch tight by drawing the yarn tail through the remaining stitch.
I absolutely love this scarf. Broken rib stitch is so chunky and satisfying; working it in double stranded chunky yarn feels like knitting a hug. Initially, I had more elaborate plans for the appliqué section. I toyed with different coloured leaves, barren tree outlines, twisted branches… But, in the end, I had Lothlorien on my mind, and the cloaks made by Galadriel and her handmaidens - plain with a single leaf brooch fastening. Simplicity won out, and the rest is now recent history. ;)
This pattern will also be in the free knitting pattern section of my website, with full abbreviation glossary. In the meantime, I hope you like the design and wish you all happy knitting, as always. :)
