She shifted awkwardly on her feet. She didn’t need him to protect her, not always, but she was safer in his company. It was just something she had learned. Something she relied upon. Him always being there. “Do we have to do this?” She asked. “Ich will dich nicht verlieren.”

Even if she was the reining princess of fear, she had her own. Lorelei was sure that her mutation was due to an over stress of her own fears. She knew it would be possible. She’d read articles when they had stopped at places that had public access to computers and even newspapers. She had done her research on their kind. “Versprechen, Niklaus?” Even if he was only in shadows at least he’d be there.

Niklaus furrowed his brows at the words. “Don’t speak German here, okay? Try to not slip into an accent, either. We want to fit in here, Lore. Besides, America doesn’t have a very good… history with our country,” he reminded her softly. He didn’t know how… humans or mutants would react to them. He’d seen things as a kid on the news and he’d be damned if he was going to let someone hurt his sister because of assholes from the 40s.

He smiled at her. “Have I ever lied to you?” he asked. “Try not to worry about it. Act like a… normal teenage girl, okay? And, don’t get too close to anyone until I give the okay.”

She'd never in her years had to watch her mouth, not for her accent and definitely not for her native language. "Y-yeah... I'll try." Lorelei nodded in understanding, mild as it was. She'd remembered him telling her about America, about how they felt about Germans. All of it being dropped like a bomb on her life. She'd have to fit in, even if just to soothe his worry.

"No, never." She confirmed, and it was true. They didn't keep secrets, they never lied, and they were open--always. "Nikky, what if--what if this isn't good? I'm thankful for having found it, but.." She was worrying again. "Never mind me, I'll figure it out." She'd at least have to try, though trying to fit in may prove difficult even when surrounded by mutants. "But they're like us right? So it should not be bad?"

She scribbled words into a notebook, answering questions she understood as she went. Few and far between they were, but she’d get help later. “Virginia.” She mumbled the name to her book. Great, she’d met her roommate and already was going to have problems. “Sorry… For my behavior…” She chewed on the inside of her cheek, nails scratching at her palms. “I have no experience with people.”

“Hey, I’m not much of a socialite either. Not around here at least,” she assured. Virginia tipped her chair back on two legs.

“Need help moving in later?” She was eager to get to know the girl a bit better, especially if she’d be rooming with her for the next who-knew number of years.

She watched the girl tip her chair and a rush of thoughts played out in her mind, many of the girl falling backwards. She'd never understand the antics of some people. "Oh uh--" her voice was just above a whisper. "Sure? I don't have much." She thought aloud, but this was the first time she'd be living in a room without Niklaus.

“Niklaus, yes.” She let her face relax, not having realized that she had looked strange. “Fine fine.” She went back to her text book. “Thanks anyways… I’m uhh–I’m Lorelei.”

“No kidding?” The empath let her eyes linger on the girl for a second before turning them down to her book. She practiced the look of diligent studying in attempt to fool the teacher as she continued. “I’m supposed to get a new roommate by that name. I’m Virginia,” she introduced with a grin.

“He isn’t a crush.” Lorelei confirmed. “He’s my brother, and they’re the ones who separated us so there’s no reason for you to be so rude.” Her voice was low, to match the tone of the girl’s. She really was going to be quite sick of everyone here within the week.

“Tall, dark, and brooding? He’s your brother?” She didn’t voice her opinion on the two’s obvious separation anxiety. “And cool it, princess. You look a lot cuter without that look on your face. Not trying to be rude, I just don’t think I’m sly enough to pass it along without getting caught.”

Lorelei followed close to her brothers side, frequently turning her head to examine their surroundings. Mutants. Hundreds of them in one place. To her it felt like the research camp all over again. She was skeptical, at best, and that was why she’d nearly jumped onto Niklaus’s back when she’d heard the scampering of feet.

It was just a squirrel, she had discovered. She couldn’t care less what they were, honestly, because it wouldn’t change how their lives had been and what their parents had done. Nothing would change if they were dropped on their heads to be like this or if something had been passed down unknowingly.

“It looks unrealistic.” Ever the optimist, Lorelei was. She let her bag fall from her hand and grasped her brothers hand in her own. “Are you sure about this, Niklaus? What if it’s not really safe?” She’d been so tired of running, this was almost a last hope.

“Mein Gott,” Niklaus cursed loudly as she practically shoved him over with her jumping. He turned around to expect the area around them, noting a squirrel rushing up the tree. “You control fear, yet you’re startled by a rodent?” he asked her with an unimpressed look.

With a sigh, he let her take his hand and held onto it tightly. “You needn’t worry. If it isn’t safe, I’ll kill every single one of them,” he all but promised her with a smile. “Until we’re sure it’s… okay to let our guard down, I’ll stay up every night and keep watch in the shadows, and – and I’m not going to let anyone hurt you, okay?” he claimed.

Pathetic. She had thought to herself. Just as everything else went--locked in her thoughts till she reached her twin’s side. Lorelei had never been the outgoing twin, she’d never liked being around people, and she certainly wasn’t planning to start now. She’d wondered if it was due to her upbringing. If somehow her experiences in life to this point had led her into this shell of a body. She shrugged, she didn’t care.

This place was everything she hadn’t wanted mixed with a room she’d have to share--with another girl no less. Never having a room of her own wasn’t the problem, truly the issue was the anxiety that chewed at her as she sat there, unmoving, waiting for the moment her brother Niklaus would walk in. That moment didn’t come.

She she sat against the headboard, her plain white sheets beneath her. They’d told her she could bring her own blankets, her own pillows, even sheets if she so wished, but she didn’t have any. She hadn’t had much, only the few clothes she had been able to acquire over their journey here. To the castle. That’s what Niklaus had called it. Pathetic.

She wondered if her brother was shaking with worry. He’d never been away from her, not since they were in the cells back at the camp. But he seemed... almost happy here. That made her sick. How could he leave her in this room, with a crazy girl for a roommate, without any indication that he was going to come to see her, ever. She shook and without realizing, her nails began to dig into her skin and her eyes clenched shut. A migraine started, and she knew she’d have to calm herself. Somewhere deep inside of her tried, only to fail. The shadows of events that hadn’t happened formed before her eyes, Niklaus falling to the floor. A gun shot? Perhaps, or even just a lack of breath. She didn’t know, but she crawled to the end of her bed and held the illusion, she coddled it, whispering sweet nothings as the door opened and he was gone from her arms.

Lorelei was quick to wipe away her tears, pulling the sleeves on her sweater down to cover the scratches on her arms. She didn’t speak, and she wouldn’t, not unless the other spoke to her first.

“Listen,” she protested, crumpling up the paper in her hand, voice low, “I’m not passing along another one of your notes in class. I don’t care how bad your crush on this guy is, I’m failing enough already. The last thing I need is you distracting me.”

Niklaus wasn’t so sure about this. A school for their kind. Of course he knew about mutants. They were all over the news when he was growing up, and he figured his powers had to come from somewhere genetic considering he hadn’t played in radioactive chemicals as a kid. Unless the mud near his house was toxic, and considering the shit-hole they came from, it was possible.

It just sounded too good to be true. A safe place for them. Maybe he was being overprotective, but there wasn’t a force on Earth that was going to separate him from his sister or put her in danger again.

So, he’d kept that small, dimly lit optimistic part of him open and decided to come here. Because if it was a safe place, his sister needed to be here. Sure, she could take care of herself. But, he had brotherly instincts that couldn’t be explained.

“This place looks like a castle. Doesn’t that seem too… fairy-tale like?” he asked his sister, dropping his bag on the steps leading to the door as he stared up at the building.

BLOOD MANIPULATION: She may create, control, and otherwise manipulate blood of oneself, others, or from her surroundings (such as blood banks, or battlefields). Such abilities include: Blood marionette, pain inducement, and shape/control(use of blood by mildly solidifying it into weapons such as: a whip, knives, etc.).

FEAR INDUCEMENT: She has the ability to cause people to feel and or see a fear, causing them to be put under a great deal of stress and anxiety.

WEAKNESSES:

BLOOD MANIPULATION: She is UNABLE to create blood, only able to use what is available to her. If she uses her own blood too long or in vast quantities she becomes anemic and weak.

FEAR INDUCEMENT: She is limited to only being able to induce fear in the form of vision projections which if kept up for too long can cause her to experience migraines.

SHORT BIO:

Lorelei Sauer was born to two anti-mutant humans. Not only that, but she was born the younger of a set of twins. Her brother Niklaus was her best friend, and her other half. At a very young age she developed her power, discovered when she had accidentally cut her finger, causing little drops of blood to fall. She cried and the blood slowly stopped falling, instead stiffening to clot itself as she whined for her parents. Not much was thought of the incident, but the next time was worse. She’d tripped, falling and scraping her hands and knees, once again the blood miraculously clotted and stopped itself. Her parents had take. Her to the hospital, in hopes of finding nothing wrong, but instead learning that their child carried the X gene.

Soon she and her brother, who had also adapted his own mutation, were whisked away for research. She remembers the needles, the blood being taken from her body, the tests, and the separation. At night she would do everything she could, projecting frightening images into the minds of the guards to sneak her way into the room where they kept Niklaus. When the guards had discovered that they couldn’t separate the twins they stopped trying and allowed them to share a room.

The camp went under attack some time later resulting in the death of most of the mutants and a great deal of the authoritative figures. Next came escape, for the twins it was the opportunity they had waited their whole lives for. Their feet only carried them so far, and they sought to seek refuge from other anti-mutant people. That was when they were found by the authorities, one of which was a mutant himself. The twins were taken to Xavier, who opened his arms and his home to the two teens.
