like we’re told this whole time about destiny and “the golden age of albion” and then Merlin really said actually the price of that is Arthur Pendragon dies right as he finally becomes the king he was meant to be, Merlin achieves everything and gets none of the reward, Guinevere gets the crown but loses the person she loves most, Morgana is doomed from the start and never gets saved, and the knights are basically picked off like it’s a checklist???

like what was the POINT of all that hope if the ending is just “congrats you fulfilled destiny, now live with the consequences forever”

I'm rewatching BBC Merlin after 84 years and god, I actually forgot how much they just loved eachother. Like, it was not fun and games it was real. They Loved eachother. For real. From the very beginning. It was visceral and deep and violent and as easy as breathing for them. There's something about you Merlin, I can't quite put my finger on it. He may be an idiot but he's a brave one. Is it my imagination or are you beginning to enjoy yourself? The half cannot truly hate what makes it whole. I want you to swear to me that what you're telling me is true - I believe you. You can trust me. If I don't get the antidote, what happens to him? I can save him. Please Father. He saved my life. I can't stand by and watch him die. You can't stop me. Leave them Arthur, go, save yourself. Follow the light. Just make sure the antidote gets to him, I'm begging you. Someone knew I was in trouble and sent a light to guide the way. Arthur, thank you. I'm going to be sick actually what the fuck.

like these people operate with the energy of a group project where nobody read the assignment but everyone still showed up convinced they’re doing great

someone, presumably Owen or Ianto, was apparently ordering pizza under the actual name “Torchwood” which is already an unbelievable sentence for a covert extraterrestrial operations unit

imagine being the delivery driver like “huh weird military bunker under the tourist attraction ordering double pepperoni again”

Ianto somehow sneaks an entire Cyberman, a cyber conversion unit, AND a scientist into the base so his cyber-girlfriend can live in the basement undiscovered which raises so many logistical questions it starts sounding like a sitcom plot

they have branded SUVs driving around town like they are a regional plumbing company instead of an allegedly classified organization dealing with alien threats

Owen leaves the keys in the vehicle with all the dangerous classified alien nonsense inside just, because

they’ve apparently distributed 2,008 retcon pills to civilians which means their solution to secrecy is not “prevent exposure” but “well hopefully everyone forgets”

Torchwood feels less like a shadowy secret organization and more like if five emotionally unstable bisexuals accidentally inherited the Men in Black headquarters and were trying their best not to get fired by the British government while actively making everything worse every week

Merlin from Huniths perspective is crazy. Imagine you fall in love with the last dragonlord who is hunted down by a psychotic king so he has to flee but then you realize you're pregnant, oops turns out your son is not only the next in line for the dragonlord powers but also the most powerful sorcerer to ever walk this earth. Naturally you send him to an old friend who works in the court of earlier mentioned psychotic king who executes people on a 'someone said they did magic' kinda basis. But oh no now he somehow gets to be the princes manservant who is around the king much more than almost anyone else. Cool. So when your village gets attacked and said prince and your son help you you send him back there even though it would be more logical to keep him with you but you didn't want to interfere with the intense homoerotic tension so off you go my only child. And that right after you witnessed the prince crashing out over a supposed sorcerer who saved his fucking life.

well, first you spend half an hour reassuring them that kids movies are fine and movies for young people are fine and the movies aimed at younger demographics are fine. And kids movies can be just as good and nuanced and valuable. But simple stories are fine too. And its fine that popculture block buster movies are aimed at families for mass appeal to bring in the max amount of revenue and put butts in seats. And its fine that studios hedge their bets and aim for known franchised IPs that will produce a high ROI because of the nostalgia factor because its fine that its the 5th sequel spinoff reboot of the story they liked as a kid. Its fine actually, you have to promise that you have no issues with any of that.

It's just that you would maybe sorta like to watch anything other than that.

And then you're a villain who hates fun.

This is our brand new science fiction adventure character, he's a scientist and an old man. He's in a TV show called Doctor Who. He's credited as Dr Who. All production documents call him Dr Who. All promotional material calls him Dr Who. The novel adaptations call him Dr Who. The movie adaptations call him Dr Who. The original tie-in fiction calls him Dr Who. And week one of his TV show he's going to meet a guy who's like "What's your name? What do we call you?" and our hero is going to be like "hohoho hehehe you dumb motherfucker. Never talk to me again." And then he's never ever going to give anyone his goddamn name.

BBC Merlin is insane as a show. Its an adaptation of Arthurian mythos. It's inspired by CW's Smallville (this is 100% real look it up). it stars 4 unknown 20 somethings and British acting legends. It's aimed at kids and families. its a tragedy. Its campy as hell. It will make you cry. It asks you, like Merlin, to believe in the Golden age of Camelot. It never shows you that Golden age. Everyone in the show is the most beautiful person you'll ever see. people will clown on the CGI. Its one of the most homerotic shows of the 2000's. Its an on purpose allegory for queerphobia, but those allegorious queer characters are largely villains. If you watched it when you were 12 you will never quite be able to let it go. This is a curse. This is an experience you wouldn't give up for the world.

Feeling nostalgic for some Merlin. I wish I could go back and rewatch it again for the first time.

the concept and idea of “you can always start trying to be a better person” is extremely important to me both in media and irl and i continue to be deeply deeply disturbed by the trend on this site pushing that these ideas in media are bad writing or even morally reprehensible

because theyd rather someone stay terrible or just straight up die than become a better person 

from a compassionate point of view it’s deeply distressing and from a pragmatic point of view it’s outright frustrating

I think part of the pushback about this is the idea that, to “redeem” bad people, their victims must first forgive them for unforgivable acts.

This is false. No one is obligated to forgive you. You can learn from your mistakes and become the best, kindest person on earth, and the people you’ve hurt still won’t forgive you, and you’ll have to accept that. And that doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to grow. Because we aren’t just “pure” or “sinful”, we’re complex.

I know everyone makes a big deal out of the emotional moments in the "Chidi and Elanor Love Each Other" montage in the season 3 finale, but honestly, that's not the part that's the best. It's something that is very funny and VERY touching.

It's this moment. This one right here is how you know they love each other. See, Chidi teaches Elanor in every timeline... But here we see Elanor reaching out. She doesn't have a lot to offer Chidi, but she's TRYING. She's TRYING to teach him something that he doesn't know, and SHE IS IMITATING HIM not because it's a joke, but because she's using him as a model for love. This kind of imitation is a CLASSIC way for someone like Elanor to dip a toe into the pool of emotional vulnerability, into reciprocating effort and feelings.

AND HE'S TAKING HER SERIOUSLY. He's CLEARLY trying really hard to follow along, even though there's NO WAY this matters... Except it matters to her, so it matters to him.

I told BBC News that I was planning a trip, and I wasn't kidding!

Ianto's Shrine in Cardiff has been on my bucket list since I first watched Torchwood back in 2012. It was always one of those "I'll get there eventually" destinations that I thought would always be there. And I had good reason to, it's been a fixture in Cardiff since Ianto's death in 2009. But when I found out it was being taken down, my arse was kicked into gear and @iridescent.quill and I booked a last minute flight.

As was the case for many people @gdavidlloyd 's performance as Ianto Jones struck me as poignant. At the time I wasn't sure why, but realising much later that I had been living my life as a closeted teenager, the reality became clear. I felt seen without realising I was feeling seen. And that kind of impact remains with you forever.

So, that's a bucket list item ticked off. Cardiff Bay is beautiful as well. The weather was stunning and the sites were something to behold. The water tower (a.k.a Torchwood's entrance) is much wetter than it looks. Makes me wonder how they filmed scenes there without getting drenched!

RIP Ianto. Gone but very evidently and most certainly not forgotten.
