Man, I’m trying to think of a way to reframe the whole Curse of Strahd opening. Want to do some sort of like... party rocks up into Barovia somehow, and even Strahd is like ‘Uh hi what the hell?’ Literally just appear in his dining room while he’s rocking out by some freak magic gone wrong. So Strahd is surprised, but now has full control of the narrative from the start. He gets to tell the players about what’s going on, not Ismark, and he can build a rapport with the party as he sees fit. Be all nice lord of the land, maybe even introduce himself as Vasili because name dropping is probably not the best idea once the party is let loose into the setting. Get them to deliver some stuff to the local Vallaki coffin maker, as a starter request...

But THEN Escher sort of slips a note to a PC somehow? I don’t know if he could, without Strahd knowing about it. Anyway, he is like ‘My husband is cheating on me with this Ireena BITCH, and I’d like that to somehow not be a thing anymore? Help a man out, thanks. Maybe you should go to Barovia village instead HMM.’ I always wanted to give Escher more agency in the world, even if it’s futile for him or he’s still under Strahd’s control. And like, in the end it all probably falls back into the normal quest progression, but at least there is some intrigue and the railroading is very abrupt / short when it comes to getting a party into Barovia.
