The Cocteau Twins' 8th and final album was released in the UK on 15 April 1996 (and a month later in the US).
After the difficulty surrounding the recording and release of Four-Calendar Café (1993) - during which Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie ended their 13-year-relationship, Guthrie entered rehab for his substance abuse, and Fraser entered treatment for mental health issues - it seemed unlikely that the band would continue. However, by 1995 Guthrie and bassist Simon Raymonde began writing again, and the recording was fast by the band's standards, taking only 2 months, and unlike most previous sessions (where each member recorded independently), all three members were in the studio.
But while the band got along, they had a strained relationship with their new label (Milk & Kisses was the second album for Fontana Records), and felt the label was disappointed with Four-Calendar Café and failed to adequately promote Milk & Kisses (which peaked at #17 in the UK and #99 in the US).
Don’t make your younger self into your own dead wife.
Don’t make your older self into a husband you resent. Idk
