âWouldnât be the first.â It couldâve been an accusation and with better bite in her voice, it wouldâve been. But⊠the conversation hadnât soured. Interests still intact, peaking with Naomiâs obviously swelling discomfort, some things were more easily ignored. Brushed off with the ringing curiosity in a question sheâd put thought to once before, shirked with a resounding belief that nothing would ever come from chasing anything down that rabbit hole. One of those dead end girls who didnât know what they wanted. She could play it coy and innocent but Moxâd seen the type before. All the wide-eyed wonder till there was a hand down her pant and then, suddenly, she was the bad guy.
Knowing that, however, and stomping herself from indulgingâŠ
Toe of a boot prodding thoughtfully against Naomiâs ankle, lips pursed while consideration spread evident. Thinned out and stretched to length, choppy nails thrumming an uneven rhythm against the table top before petering off with a snort of disenchanted laughter.
âWhat? Yâ want me tâ crawl under the bench and eat yâ out until youâre sure or somethinâ? Yâ know that ainât how it works, right?â More laughter at the otherâs expense, cigarette drained of itâs last few drags before being snuffed out in the space between them. Head shaking and teeth toying with the lining of a chronically split lip, free hand unoccupied with the task of smearing ashed into something lewd and offensive was tasked with frisking back a mess of blonde hair too unruly to think of ever taming. âAinât sayinâ I wouldnât though⊠so ya donât catch the wrong idea. But Iâm not an expert on this kinda thing. Always figured yâ just⊠knew that sorta crap.â
Mox was the type of person to make ridiculous comments and inappropriate remarks for the sake of flustering the person she was talking to, and Naomi wasnât the type to let cheeky quips like that get to her -- at least, that was what she told herself, ignoring the heat in her face as she glanced down at the foot that had just nudged her. It was different when guys made comments; she knew how to respond to that, knew the implications behind perverted flirtations and blatant leers when they came from guys, and maybe it shouldnât have been so confusing to figure out when Mox did it.
Maybe it was less to do with gender and more to do with the fact that she was attracted to Mox.
âThatâs good to know,â dry and accompanied by a roll of dark eyes, trying to play off the tidbit of information Mox had offered her. Something she was absolutely not thinking about. Naomiâs gaze shifted, met Moxâs once more, embarrassment from before gone. âItâs different, isnât it? Kissing a girl,â she clarified. âItâs not like kissing a guy.â Though it was a statement, the way she quirked her eyebrows managed to lilt the last word into an inquiry.
She checked the time on her phone, sliding it back into her pocket so her full attention was on Mox. Maybe there was something to be said for teasing, for dancing around the real reason sheâd brought this up, but Naomi had practice eventually, and sheâd thought about it long enough. Now was as good a time as any. âWhat if I just wanted to kiss you?â Naomi leaned in a little as she asked the question, a challenge there, in the way she shortened the distance between them as if sharing a secret.
Right. Rumors. Sheâd heard a handful of them, intercepted and laughed down till questionable, despite the majority of them harboring enough airs of truth to reign believable. Things about her⊠her friends⊠her mother⊠what the both of them do on their free time. Some people going so far as to bet sheâd started following in her old ladyâs footsteps. Something Moxâd actively snorted out of existence because sheâd not have been scrounging around the floor of her car for gas money if she was hooking⊠wouldnât have had to worry about where sheâd be sleeping or if sheâd get her fix. All things Naomi was, apparently, uncaring of.
They always were at first.
âYouâre a chick, whatâs there tâ be curious about?â Knowing the conversationâs trajectory and willingly following it were in two separate tales. Moxâs grin broadening for her teasing, still leant backwards and blowing halos of smoke up up up overhead. âWhat if they were rumors about me killing broads behind the school and hiding their bodies in my trunk for fun ooo-la-la times later?â A morbid picture sheâd snickered the punctuation to before raising upright.
Naomi was different enough to find slack to her mockery, head cocked and a huff building when arm draped heavily over the space between them. Reaching o u t and across until choppy nails were close enough to scratch dark skin, but didnât. âGet tâ the point, Omi.â
It wasnât that Naomi didnât care about the more concerning rumors sheâd heard. Though not for the reason that others did, a fear of having her own reputation soiled for associating with Mox, she still found herself wondering just how true they were. It was obvious that Mox had a rough life, but she wasnât the type of person who wanted or needed anyoneâs sympathy.
Naomi sighed and shook her head ever-so-slightly. âIf there were rumors like that, do you think Iâd really believe them? My friends are full of shit. And if I did, would I be sitting behind the school with you?â offered in response, questions of her own serving as retorts lacking a certain bite to it that would have been present had Mox actually offended her.
If Naomi was easy to offend, she wouldnât have made it this long, the times they hung out brief and not exactly consistent.
âYou just want me to say it, donât you?â Eyebrows quirked, turning her head to study Mox properly. âI think I might like girls.â Emphasizing the word to make it clear what she meant. âIâve been trying to figure it out, but-â Brow crinkling. â-I was thinking that maybe you could help me?â Question mark tacked on as an afterthought.

Even when they told her not to be there, she always ended up in the same place. Suspended and loitering⊠always better than sitting on some dirty sofa, counting the minutes until her mother stumbled in with her pick for the night. Better than watching time tick by in a daze on some bathroom floor, too stoned to see straight and laughing at the irony of ending up in the same place as every other piece of shit around. Naomi coming to see her made the decision less desperate, at least. After all, smoking alone behind a school she wasnât welcome in didnât leave the best of tastes in her mouth.
âThat why you always show?â Working up courage to ask the same question everyone before her had. Poking around because there was nothing better to do and if Moxâd been primed to snap, everyoneâd have already known. Thereâd always be someone too curious for their own good.
It did make her wonderâââ
âWhy yâ askinâ?â Nose scrunched and lips curling a crooked grin, spilling smoke once parted and the lean assumed stretched further. Boots hooking at the underside of the bench to keep herself steady⊠back back back. âLookinâ for a date?â Presumptuous or mocking, the same inflection at the end of the day, dirtied fingers combing through hair sheâd meant to hide under a beanie left behind, âdonât really think about it much⊠but yeah. What ainât there tâ like?â
And, of course, there was that, a cigarette between Moxâs fingers that Naomi had no interest in, a habit that didnât fit in with her plans for her future but not one that she considered as disgusting as some of her friends did. (Well, up until they had a few beers, and then they were willing to put anything in their mouths if someone told them it was cool.)
Reason Naomiâs nose didnât curl at the smoke released into the air, didnât try to wave it away because sheâd seen one too many people wave Mox off not to wonder f the gesture would be misunderstood.
It was a fair assumption, she supposed. They didnât really have much in common, and Naomiâd heard the stories about girls whoâd thought itâd be funny to -- she wasnât sure what they thought they were doing, really, besides being giant asses. So, rather than take offense to the accusation, Naomiâs lips just quirked into a small smile.
âCurious.â She paused. âAbout girls. I donât really care if the rumors everyone spreads are true or not,â she added, voice far more serious than Moxâs had been. Really, if sheâd put any merit into things stage-whispered in locker rooms, would she have been sitting next to Mox?
