The inherent fucking racism/xenophobia in the “Save Christmas” rhetoric????? They imposed lockdowns twice right before Eid, countless Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist and more holidays went by in lockdown and now that its Christmas it’s somehow more important? People out there telling all of us that our holidays and religions don’t matter and we have to step up for society (which we did btw) are now going “oh no not Christmas whatever will we do??” Now that it’s YOUR holiday you finally pay attention? Fuck off. We could have been careful and ended this months ago but y’all decided to play around until it came to Christmas. The government deciding to not give a shit about Eid but decide to “protect Christmas” tells you everything you need to know.
On Rosh Hashannah it is an OBLIGATION, not a tradition, but an OBLIGATION to pray in groups of ten or more. Any other year, we must pray in person because the use of electricity is not permitted on our holy days.
I had my Rosh Hashannah alone, in my basement, through streaming. It was the first and only time my cat has gone to synagogue with me.
Christians can fucking deal like everybody else
My rabbi’s dog barked through Yom Kippur services because she saw a mailman.
We all gave up having a solemn holiday praying for our souls to stay separated and not kill someone.
Suck it up, for once in your lives!
Non-Christian people have trouble even getting the time off from work or school to observe their most holy holidays, but y’all are mad that your kids can’t cough on a mall Santa during the height of a pandemic.
Yeah, can we talk about the Jewish holidays for a moment? Because it’s not just one or two that have been affected, it’s been, like, most of the major ones. Know what was happening during Passover this year, where a central part of the typical observance is a seder with family and friends? Lockdown. No seders. Hard to find the food needed if you couldn’t go to a store. Rosh Hashanah? Yom Kippur? Sukkot? The rest of the High Holidays in autumn? Still under pandemic conditions, so nope. My temple didn’t have in-person services. I’m Reform so my temple has no issues with using electricity or technology to Zoom those services…but they are all typically in person. And not all Jews are cool with electricity and tech on Shabbat. Anyone who was supposed to have a bat or bar mitzvah, for most of this year? Yeah, so no. Oh, and by the way, for a bar or bat mitzvah you traditionally spend YEARS learning the specific Torah portion for the specific week on the calendar you are going to chant, and often spend a year doing a project to accompany it. So a lot of bat and bar mitzvah kids missed their big days. Hanukkah is also in December this year and that’s not looking good for get togethers, is it? What about all the other faiths missing out right now? Divali just happened. Eid happened. So many Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist and other holidays this year have occurred that people did not get to celebrate, and that was *just fine* wasn’t it? Except it wasn’t, and it shouldn’t have been.
Christians – American Christians especially because I know our evangelical and fundamentalists brothers and sisters are ridiculously stupid about this even on non-pandemic years, shut the fuck up about the holidays this year.
Easter was spent in lockdown and that’s our holiest day. (And if you think Christmas is the holiest, go review your denomination’s teachings becuase it shouldn’t be.)
Everyone else dealt with it, we can too.
