Some good news
that is the face of a man worried he will be next
Good news, he was not next! In fact, she accepted him as her mate, he learned the crane mating dance and now every year, he artificially inseminates her with crane semen to expand the very endangered crane population. True story.
Sorry, he WHAT? Imagine being this man's boss and having to sit him down like. Listen. Brian. We need you to fuck the bird. You have to act like you're excited about it.
crane husband.....
this is the diametric opposite of all those awful swan wife stories and i love it.
(WalWaPo makes you jump through like three separate hoops before you can read the article, so I will share some of the highlights:
Walnut was born in a species-recovery breeding program in the 1980′s. The program had crane chicks hand-raised by human volunteers, and at that time they did not fully understand the measures necessary make sure that the chicks do not imprint on humans and retain their identity as cranes.
As a result, her keepers believe, Walnut does not recognize other cranes as members of her own species.
It has not been proven that Walnut killed her previous suitors; however, there is a persistent rumor in the white-naped-crane-conservation community that she did.
Because this species is highly endangered, and the gene pool of the captive population is small, it’s pretty important for the survival of her species that Walnut A) mate, and B) not kill a bunch of other cranes.
The actual name of the keeper is Chris Crowe.
They both arrived at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in 2004.
Walnut immediately began paying special attention to Chris--and ignoring the eligible male crane in a nearby enclosure.
Walnut initiated their courtship, performing the opening moves of a mating dance.
Chris realized that if he reciprocated the mating dance, it might be possible to artificially inseminate Walnut with her participation and consent. (The process normally involves restraining the bird.)
It worked!
Chris and Walnut have had five children, who were raised by other crane couples at the facility--sometimes the biological dad and his mate--both because it’s unclear whether Walnut would accept the chicks as her own, and because Chris is not equipped to be a Crane Dad.
However, the Institute provides her with artificial eggs to sit on, and Chris takes his turn looking after them. (This would not work with real eggs because he can’t sit on them properly, but Walnut seems to feel that he is on the job if he just stands over them.)
Chris accepts that he is pretty much married to this bird. White-naped cranes live to be about 60, and they mate for life, so he knows he can’t retire while Walnut is alive. (At the time of the article, Walnut was 36, and Chris 42.)
Legit cannot pick the funniest part of this
she has not been PROVEN to have killed her exes, but there is a PERSISTENT RUMOR (really officers she's simply DEVASTATED, she sobs, wearing a new feather boa unfortunately resembling her most recent deceased husband)
His name is Chris CROWE. (Mrs. Walnut Crane-Crowe?)
the mental images of a whole human man learning and performing the crane mating dance, and "sitting" on artificial eggs so she thinks he's performing his duties as a husband and father (and apparently OBJECTS if he does not?)
"chris, buddy, you gotta marry the possibly-murderous crane lady for the GOOD OF THE SPECIES." (alternately: "chris, my man! good news! we found you a very interested lady! She's 36, she's very spirited and independent, she holds a very important and rare status in her society! ...Is there a downside? WELL...")
chris sits any potential human partners down, like "my love, you must understand before we wed,,, i am already... Attached" (camera drifts wistfully to the above photo) "Lady Walnut and I have an,, Understanding... the relationship is open, but very committed"
just had to explain this post to my father bc he thought my stifled laughter was a signal of illness.
well done, everyone, good game. hit the showers.
Not only is he 'married' to walnut, this has apparently happened SEVERAL times, so he has MULTIPLE crane wives, none of which know about any of his other crane wives. This man is, for some unknown reason, irresistible to cranes
the “this content has been removed for violating Tumblr’s Community Guidelines” notice really adds a lot of flavor to this post and somehow makes it MORE obscene than whatever that actually was
World Heritage Post
I regret being the bearer of bad news, but I thought it should be shared that Walnut passed away in January of this year (2024). There's a lot of mixed info about the lifespan of cranes (due to people misunderstanding what a median is...) but the average for most species I know of is 20-30 years (in the wild if nothing eats them/they don't die young), and 30-45 in captivity, with the oldest known white-naped crane having loved to be 46. Given that she was 42, this old gal did good, and I'm certain she will be missed by folks here.
Fly on forever Walnut Crane-Crowe
That cat is legitimately getting a state funeral, several statues, a weepy 10 thousand word obituary from The Guardian and an Elton John tribute song when he goes.
This sketch is incredible. Perfect moment to capture. 10/10 for the artist.

This country is a farce and this "trial" is a travesty. They pinned it on a random guy and are slow-walking it as openly and and unapologetically incompetently as possible because they can. "What are you gonna do about it?" At best they steal multiple years from this man's life before he's exonerated, at worst they kill him and rule it a suicide. God Damn America.

So I found this photoset in one of the opossum rehab groups I frequent, but then a few days later my friend @calysto1395 sent me this Twitter post…

The following two images are drawings of the opossum and his fairy friend (as if the fairy was alive) In the second drawing he is leaning against the fairy and eating a pair while she smiles down at him.]
Someone else on tumblr pointed out that PASSENGERS might have been a more meaningful movie if it was about just THE ONE person dealing with being alone on the ship for the rest of their life. And if, to cope, they go through and make it a point to learn everything they can about all of the other people on the ship.
And I just keep thinking about this idea.
There are 4999 other people on that ship and what if the protagonist spent the remainder of their life (and they do live their full life) learning about each of them.
They took an interest in their hobbies so that they could have some sort of connection to them.
As their sanity flexed in an effort to cope, they could have had these really involved imaginary conversations with the crew about their interests. And by the end of their natural life they will have known everything they could have ever known about these other 4999 people.
…
AND THEN THE REST OF THEM WAKE UP. And they have some 90 odd years of security footage of this one crew member talking to each of them in turn. And it goes far beyond ‘I have figured out how to cook that one dish you were struggling with’ or ‘I have read THE SILMARILLION at your suggestion and Jesus Christ I have thoughts about it.’
They actually start making connections between all of the crew.
Like ‘You like bugs! You should totally talk to Cindy! She’s an entomologist!’
Or ‘Did you know that you and Said’s grandfathers were both in the same infantry?’
Or ‘You and Jamie are both avid bee keepers and I think you need to meet.’
Or ‘I know you’re really struggling with this, but Aneesha said she went the exact same thing and I think talking to her can help.’
And because all of these crew members are watching the videos that have been individually addressed to them (Because why not? They’re colonizing. There’s not a lot yet available by way of entertainment) they sort of start talking to each other at the Protagonist’s suggestion. And within a year they are THE MOST unified interconnected colony of any of the colonies because this one crew member broke the ice for them a lifetime ago.
Several of them are engaged.
Two are about to have children named after the Protagonist.
…
AND BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS EVERYONE NOW they notice when one week a crew member isn’t out and about and no one can get in touch with them. So finally somebody goes to check and they find them huddled in a ball and mourning.
Because Protagonist is dead.
And the other people are like: ‘Yes. We know. This is literally the first thing we knew about them.’
But Mourner is like: ‘You don’t understand. I got to the end.’
And then everyone realizes that the mourner has basically been BURNING through all of the videos Protagonist has addressed to them and got to the last one they made to them before they died. And Protagonist left a final message for each of them.
Suddenly everyone’s having a real frank conversation with themselves about how fast they’re going through their videos and if they’re prepared to keep going at that rate and get to the end, or if they should put it off indefinitely.
And one by one, in time, each of them realizes they can’t put it off. Not only are they invested in the end, but they care enough about Protagonist to really acknowledge their death.
Each crew member does this at their own pace. It becomes a rite of passage of sorts. And Protagonist is given some sort of proper memorial so the colonists all have a place to go when their time comes to grieve.
…
BUT BEFORE EVERYONE GETS TO THE END, someone has started noticing how Protagonist treated the robots on the ship over the years. And surprise, surprise, Protagonist named all the robots too and treated them like individuals depending on their quirks. So now someone has finally solved the mystery of why droid 808 insists on being called ‘Bob,’ and why 239 knows ASL, and why the auxiliary robots are so salty about nobody ever being able to tell them apart.
Not only that, but security logs shows that the robots were about 19% more efficient when Protagonist was alive than they are now. And THE VERY SECOND the rest of the crew starts observing the same habits Protagonist used in treating these robots ALL OF THAT EFFICIENCY COMES RIGHT BACK.
Because they missed Protagonist too.
…
And things settle. Everyone thinks they’ve reached the end of Protagonist’s surprises.
…
THEN THEY ARE FINALLY ABLE TO START TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN THEMSELVES AND THE OTHER COLONIES.
And a visiting party shows up.
The visitors are surprised to see HOW WELL everyone on this colony is getting along, because, wow, people are civil where they come from but GODDAMN.
And one of these visiting members is really excited to see their sibling.
And ‘Oh, that’s so nice! Who is it?’
And then the visiting member says a name every single person on this colony knows.
The colonists have to tell them what happened to their sibling, Protagonist.
But they also HAVE to tell the sibling what knowing Protagonist MEANT to them. And what Protagonist knowing THEM, meant to them.
And it’s sad.
The colony pretty much wholesale adopts Protagonist’s sibling as a part of their family because they don’t know what else they can do to fill that void. But just in case, they give the Protagonist’s sibling THE ENTIRETY of Protagonist’s security footage. Because there is 90 years of it and that way they can carry their sibling with them for the rest of their life even if only in video.
And then the colonists think:
‘This. This was the end of Protagonist’s story. And this was a good a proper way to observe it.’
…
AND THEN ONE DAY A SHIP SHOWS UP THAT IS NOT LIKE ANY SHIP THE COLONISTS HAVE EVER SEEN.
And the people driving it aren’t human.
They speak English and passable French. They can chicken scratch Urdu, Mandarin, and Swahili.
Everyone is stunned and wants to know ‘why…?’ and ‘how…?’
And the aliens are just, like, ‘Oh. Protagonist. We ran into them while you were in space. They told us you’d be settling here and asked that we check up on you whenever we were rolling by this quadrant next.’
‘They were really nice. Taught us English. Gave us the files on a couple of your other popular languages as well just to be safe. How’s the colonizing going anyway?’
And everyone thinks back to THAT ONE MONTH of security footage where Protagonist was NIGH IMPOSSIBLE to find. And when they finally did come back to their normal routine they were really quiet and thoughtful for about a week before really getting back to themselves.
The linguists all suddenly remember that IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THAT REALLY WEIRD MONTH, Protagonist had a new coded language saved to their personal affects and was very insistent that they LEARN IT. ‘FOR REASONS.’
And very quietly, the entire colony makes peace with the fact that Protagonist established a very successful first contact while they were all asleep.
Because of course they did.
Former girl scouts: yeah idk it just kinda seemed like house wife training
Former boy scouts: yeah it was basically lord of the flies with a homophobic youth pastor. One time we [most fucked up story you’ve ever heard]
Huh. This is precisely the opposite of the Expiriences I’ve heard of.
My Husband was in Boyscouts and he talks fondly about how it taught him how to cook, repair clothes, balance a checkbook and set up a comfortable emergency shelter so he could make a home wherever he went.
My mom was in Girl Scouts and talks fondly about how she learned how to emotionally manipulate people into buying Far Too Many Cookies, Commit financial crimes to learn how to spot if you’re stolen from, make blood pacts in the woods with other girls, set literally anything on fire, kidnap and raise a stag, Unionize her Peers, do civil protests, learn eight different ways to poison someone, and hunt small game with a sharpened stick.
@gallusrostromegalus Can I get the ISBN numbers and/or titles for your mom’s scout books for no particular reason?
Ah, nah, no books here.
A lot of people in the notes are Speculating that the difference between Mom and OP’s expiriences with Scouts is that a lot of the quality of the org relies upon your individual troop leaders (I’m inclined to agree- I never got to be in Scouts because the troop leader for my local group told my mom she didn’t “want a r*tard” slowing down the other girls” in front of me.)
But for Mom her troop leaders were:
Grandma, who despite having an eighth-grade education, was so good at accounting and statistics she became the head Finance Officer for a local grocery chain and testified in several fraud and wage-theft cases.
Mrs. Feldmyer, whose husband served in europe in WWII and brought her home from France with him. To quote Mom: “I always wondered why we had human-shaped targets for archery and rifles until I learned about the French Resistance in High School.” Mrs. Feldmyer’s Husband lost a leg in the War and thier daughter had some kind of severe autoimmune disorder so Mrs and Mr. Feldmyer were big on teaching the Troop about Disability Rights, first aid and medical respnsibilty. They pettitioned the Organization to make a Vaccination Badge for undertaking the civic responsibilty of getting fully vaccinated but that didn’t come to pass, but they did make sure Mom’s whole troop got vaccinated for EVERYTHING as soon as it became available.
Actually now that I’m thinking abut it there were several women who married american servicemen to get the hell out of Europe after the war and all of them taught shooting, archery or “Self Defense”
“Aunt Hattie” Who wasn’t Mom’s Aunt, but thier Hungarian neighor, who had a degree in Mycology and had been elementary-age during WWII, so she and her sisters basically lived in to woods for like six years to avoid the fighting.
Mrs. Chapel and Mrs. Jefferson’s daughters weren’t “Officially” part of the troop for a while because they were Black and Ohio’s local segregation laws took forever to repeal, but they had Uniforms and went on trips with the troop and earned badges the same, and their moms would cover a lot of Current Events for the Troop so Mom and the troop walked in her first Civil Rights Protest March when she was 9. The second they *could* file the girls in, grandma had them registered within the week.
It’s worth noting many of the Fathers were involved in thr troop as well. Grandpa was the local United Auto Worker’s Union Representative, so everyone had to learn what fair compensation looked like, how to Negotiate effectively and how to organize a Strike (He was also responsible for the Stag. He was a sucker for animals). Mr. Chapel was an auto mechanic and by god everyone learned how to change oil and tires and do a lot of thier own auto repair and diagnostics. Mr. Feldmyer organized everyone’s Polio Vaccinations.
So if you want to learn Survival Skills, accounting, shooting, mycology, how to organize your community and uh. Smuggle a fucking deer into your house. the best thing I can reccomend is making friends with your local Union representatives, State and National Park staff, museum/zoo/botanic garden employees and probably the Society for Creative Anachronism for archery and other combat skills.
I understand the Girl Scouts as an organization are pretty good these days but your milage varies significantly with your local members, and most of us are a bit old so you can Adult Scout by going out and making cool friends.
Yeah, my experience with Girl Guides (both as a kid and as a leader) varied a LOT depending on who (or who else) was in charge.
Like, some years we legit did a lot of housewife shit. But also camping? Other years we did a lot of neat stuff - I had one leader who wanted us to learn a lot of stuff to make us independent functional adults; she taught us the basics of a lot of life skills, from basic cooking and home repair to how to change a tire. And later, as a leader, I had a fellow leader who was really into computers and was teaching 8 year olds to code Raspberry Pi.
"AI native" college graduates are hitting the workplace -- and, as experts warned, bosses are finding their performance disappointing.
As one New York financier told Financial Times journalist Gillian Tett, new hires who were seen as “AI natives” are turning out to have alarmingly shallow ideas. So much so, the anonymous finance worker admitted, that his firm now actively avoids seeking out AI-literate STEM graduates, and opts to comb through humanities students instead. “We want critical thinking, not just AI,” the financier told the FT.
As a college educator, this terrifies me, it's not what I want for my students... but at least this story gives me an avenue to push back on them.
