“I hope whoever started it is making like, all the money.” Emm said as Lola and her new friend came barreling back and promptly started begging for both attention and another throw of the ball.

“Lola, give!” Emm demanded, holding out her hand. 

Lola chewed on the ball and wriggled around. Emm resisted the urge to stomp her foot.

“Lola. Give!”

The dog dropped the ball and Emm snatched it up and handed it to Dorcas.

“Uh, isn’t that just like... Starbucks? In general?” Dorcas said. DIdn’t really seem like something that would get patented or anything. If it was just a cup of whipped cream. 

“Oh hey,” Dorcas said to the dogs as they came back. She watched Emm and the dogs for a moment as she got the ball back. 

“You want it? You want it?” She waved the ball, tossed it.

“It’s basically just a cup of whipped cream but it’s fantastic and she loves it.” Emm explained, fishing her phone out of her pocket to show Dorcas the video. She tried to do something fun every time she took Lola to the park, to reaffirm the fact the dog park equals a fun time. But honestly, she just liked watching dogs eat whipped cream.

“Oh that’s funny,” Dorcas laughed, leaning closer to look at the video as well. She glanced over her shoulder quickly, making sure she could still see Lola, “That’s a cute idea.”

Emm watched Lola and the other dog chase each other (and the ball) around for a moment before turning back to her friend. 

“Not really. Lola loves car rides so we went through Starbucks to get Puppicinos.” She hadn’t had the money or the self-worth to buy herself anything, but she’d always splurge for the dog. “I have video proof of how much she loved it, if you wanna see?”

If she ever got out of her parents house Dorcas was getting a dog. First thing. Hopefully a dog that could go running with her or something. Whatever, either way, she wanted one. Looking around at all the people she felt a little curl of jealous frustration. 

“Puppicinos?” Dorcas asked. Not really sure what that was, didn’t coffee poison dogs? Not that she knew, “Uh sure, yeah.”

“You say that because you’ve not thrown the ball twenty times in a row yet.” Emm joked, watching as Lola automatically perked up at the mention of the ball. Man, dogs had such simple lives. Why couldn’t she have been a dog instead a person? Like sure, less sex, but also no college rejection letters. Emm dug the well-loved tennis ball out of her pocket and tossed it to Dorcas.

Dorcas caught the ball, “Shift change on fetch?” Lola seemed interested in the ball, and she tossed it. Another dog also seemed interested as Lola dashed off. Dorcas looked back to Emm. 

“You been here too long?”

Lola saw Dorcas before Emmeline did, making a beeline straight towards the other girl before running circles around her feet, wriggling and yipping in excitement. At least someone was having a good time.

Emm really appreciated what Dor’d say, honestly really. But… she’d dreamed about Harvard since grade school. And she sucked at letting things go.

“Lola, c’mere silly, leave Dorcas alone.”

Dorcas grinned at the dog, leaning down to try to pet her. Lola was moving around a little bit too much, but she got to scratch behind her ears before she moved on. No treats or a tennis ball on her sadly, not like she kept puppy things in her house. 

“No worries, I did come to play with her,” Dorcas said, straightening up to look over at Emm. It was nice to actually get to hang around animals.

Dorcas pulled up to the park got out of her car and looked around for Emmeline. She honestly wasn’t really sure what was going to help her friend. Thus far Dorcas hadn’t gotten in anywhere, not even the college from their own fucking town. 

But whatever, this was important. Emmeline cared a lot about this, so she at least had to try.
