for the fic game - #2, please, and what part of it did you either not originally plan to add, or which part evolved sort of on its own in a way that surprised you?
You got revery alone will do!
Ugh what a dream this fic was to writeeee. Everything just... flowed. And it was really fun, because it was the first time I wrote an "action" ish type of scene, and I was terrified, and it worked out soooo well. I think THAT was the scene that surprised me the most - I went back and forth on whether I wanted to include the whole infected chase scene at all because it sort of interfered with the more peaceful, fever dream sequence of the rest of the fic, but once I started it, and finished it, I was soooo fucking surprised to find that the fic didn't work without it. It ended up being a catalyst between Joel and Ellie and all the things they were building towards but not saying, and it's one of my favorite scenes to look back on.
Snip from the scene mentioned below:
The retort of a rifle rips through the air. Ellie feels a hot splash against the back of her head; she thrusts the dead weight of the Infected off of her, clambers to her feet. The other Infected are closing in, screaming and reaching, and Joel’s hanging half out of the hatch at the top of the ladder, rifle wedged against his shoulder. He sights down the barrel, fires again. The head of an approaching Infected pops like a wet, ripe cherry.
“Ellie !” He screams, and Ellie backpedals, leaps again. This time, her fingers close around the bottom rung of the ladder and she hauls herself up, muscles screaming, and takes the second rung, then the third. The soles of her sneakers scramble for purchase -
Another rifle retort, then another. Something catches a hold of her flailing foot and yanks; she plunges down, smashing her chin on the rung below her. Blood spurts, hot and metallic, across her tongue. Another rifle shot, this one so close she can feel the burn of the bullet as it passes by, but the hands on her foot don’t let go.
“Ellie!” Joel roars. “Fucking kick it!”
