"Get the door," Vi mumbled from somewhere beneath the blankets, her voice thick with sleep.
You groaned and shifted beneath the covers, blinking slowly as consciousness returned. Sometime during the night you'd kicked most of the blankets onto the floor. Your bun had nearly fallen apart as well, leaving loose curls and tangled strands hanging around your face. Another series of knocks rattled through the apartment.
"Alright!" you called hoarsely. "I'm coming!"
The pounding didn't stop.
With a sigh, you pushed yourself out of bed. The oversized t-shirt hanging from your frame slipped slightly off one shoulder as you shuffled across the apartment. Cold air brushed against your bare legs, and you rubbed at your eyes while making your way toward the door. Whoever was on the other side clearly had no intention of leaving.
You unlocked it and pulled it open.
The bright hallway light immediately made you squint.
Sevika stood on the other side.
For a moment your sleep-addled brain struggled to process what you were looking at. The emerald green suit fit her perfectly. The tailored jacket sat neatly across her broad shoulders, and the morning light spilling through the hallway windows caught against the dark fabric. Her silver eyes looked impossibly bright against her skin, and her dark hair had already been clipped back into place.
She looked completely awake.
The exact opposite of you.
You rubbed your eyes again and squinted up at her. "Aren't I off today?"
Sevika nodded once before drawing in a breath. "I realized this case is going to require considerably more paperwork than I originally anticipated. I thought I might offer an on-site cash bonus if you came in and handled it."
Your exhaustion vanished almost immediately.
"Sure," you said without hesitation. "I just need to get ready."
To your surprise, the corner of her mouth twitched upward. "You have about an hour."
Your brows shot up. "So you planned this?"
"No, I—" The words stopped abruptly.
Sevika wasn't looking at you anymore.
Her eyes had shifted past your shoulder toward the bed.
Your confusion only deepened.
"Come in," you said. "I'll make coffee."
Still half asleep, you stepped aside and allowed her inside.
Behind you, Vi finally stirred properly. The blonde rolled onto her back and squinted toward the front door before suddenly sitting upright.
"Sev?" she asked, shocked. "What the fuck are you doing here?"
Sevika lowered herself onto the couch with a grunt. "This is my employee."
Vi stared at her. Then she looked at you. Then back at Sevika.
Her eyebrows slowly climbed higher. "Then why are you at her apartment this early?"
The room grew strangely quiet.
You wandered toward the kitchen, oblivious to whatever was happening behind you. The coffee maker gurgled as you filled it, and the familiar smell began spreading through the apartment.
"I thought I'd offer extra work," Sevika replied.
The answer sounded perfectly reasonable.
A few minutes later, Vi wandered into the kitchen wearing nothing but boxers and a hastily pulled-on shirt. Her hair pointed in every direction. She accepted the mug you handed her and immediately took a sip.
"Why didn't you call?" she asked.
Sevika pinched the bridge of her nose.
"I don't have her number."
Vi barked out a laugh. "You don't have her number?"
"Then how do you know where she lives?" She plopped onto the couch beside Sevika, spreading out comfortably while sipping her coffee.
For the first time, Sevika seemed genuinely caught off guard. Her jaw tightened. Her eyes drifted briefly over Vi before snapping away again.
The tension was obvious to anyone paying attention.
Unfortunately, neither of you were.
You were busy digging through your closet trying to find clean clothes, and Vi was far too entertained by the entire situation to notice she was sitting beside a woman who looked one poorly chosen sentence away from committing a felony.
You hurried into the bathroom and tugged your shirt over your head, tossing it onto the counter before reaching for a plain black bra. Time was already slipping away. You barely had enough to get yourself presentable, let alone worry about changing everything. After fastening the bra, you immediately grabbed your toothbrush and began brushing your teeth, moving around the small bathroom while mentally running through everything you still needed to do.
You didn't bother changing your underwear.
A minute later, you wandered back into the apartment with the toothbrush still hanging from your mouth. The cold air brushed against your skin as you crossed toward your dresser.
Across the room, Vi sat comfortably on the couch with a mug of coffee balanced in one hand and the television remote in the other. She flipped lazily through channels before glancing toward Sevika from the corner of her eye. The smirk that spread across her face was immediate.
You remained completely oblivious.
Bent over in front of your dresser, you pulled open drawers and searched for something appropriate to wear. Court meant professionalism. More importantly, it meant representing Sevika well. Eventually you settled on a fitted black long-sleeve blouse and a dark pencil skirt. A pair of simple kitten heels would work well enough.
As you gathered the outfit into your arms, you found yourself glancing briefly toward Sevika.
You wished you had suits like hers.
Everything she wore looked expensive and sharp. Confident. Effortless.
Sometimes you wished you leaned more into that side of yourself. The more androgynous side. The side that felt stronger than soft blouses and careful makeup. But every time you tried, you ended up second-guessing yourself halfway through.
With your clothes gathered against your chest, you disappeared back into the bathroom.
The sound of conversation drifted through the door while you got ready, though between the running water, the buzzing in your ears from rushing, and your own movements, you couldn't make out what either woman was saying.
You focused on your reflection instead.
Your hair was still curled from the night before. Thankfully it hadn't completely fallen. After brushing through it, you pinned most of it into a professional bun, leaving a few loose strands around your face to soften it. Then came your makeup. Nothing dramatic. Just enough concealer, mascara, and color to look awake.
Once that was done, you pulled on your stockings, buttoned the blouse, stepped into the skirt, and slipped into your heels.
The final touch was lipstick.
You tossed the tube into your purse before taking one last look in the mirror.
When you emerged from the bathroom, both women looked up.
"Alright," you said with a long exhale.
You grabbed a lint roller from the counter and quickly ran it over your clothes.
Your eyes shifted between them.
Had something happened while you were getting ready?
You glanced toward Vi again. She only smirked and tilted her head. Meanwhile, Sevika sat stiffly on the couch, shoulders tight, her expression unreadable except for the irritation radiating from her.
Was this about last night?
Had she changed her mind?
Did she regret almost sleeping with you?
Maybe walking around half-dressed hadn't helped.
The thought settled heavily in your chest.
You swallowed hard and adjusted your purse strap.
Neither woman offered an explanation.
When you reached the doorway, you paused and looked back toward Vi. "Hey."
She glanced up. "What's up?"
You motioned vaguely toward the apartment. "Stay as long as you want. Just make sure you lock up."
Vi saluted with two fingers. "No problem."
You started closing the door before pausing again. "Oh. And can you feed Franklin for me?"
Franklin lifted his head from the couch at the sound of his name.
Vi laughed. "Got it, babe."
"Okay..." you said with an awkward chuckle.
Then, just as the door was swinging shut, Vi called after you. "See you later!"
"Bye." You smiled despite your confusion.
The moment the door clicked closed behind you, the smile faded.
Sevika stood waiting in the hallway with her hands tucked into her pockets, her expression still carved from stone.
You hesitated. "Are you ready?"
Without another word, she turned and started walking toward the elevator.
You hurried after her, increasingly convinced you'd missed an entire conversation while brushing your teeth.
The elevator ride was painfully quiet.
You stood beside Sevika with your purse hanging from one shoulder, absently twisting the strap between your fingers while the floors ticked by above the door. The fluorescent lights reflected off the brushed metal walls around you, and for the first time that morning you actually looked at her.
Your eyes drifted to the expensive watch sitting on her wrist. The face gleamed beneath the elevator lights, undoubtedly worth more than your monthly rent. Probably several months of it.
You stared at it for a moment before glancing up at her. "Do we have time to get coffee?"
Sevika's eyes shifted toward you immediately. One eyebrow rose as she slid a hand into her pocket. "Are you asking me to buy you coffee?"
You shrugged and looked away casually, though your stomach was still slightly twisted from whatever strange mood she'd been in all morning.
"No." You paused. "But if you want to, that'd be nice."
A slow breath escaped through her nose.
The smile looked almost amused. "Vi didn't offer?"
Your brows immediately pulled together. "What?"
"Coffee." She tilted her head as she whispered it.
For a second you genuinely wondered if you'd missed part of the conversation.
"No?" You let out a scoff and shook your head. "I'll get my own coffee then."
The elevator doors slid open.
Before she could step out first like she always did, you walked past her.
Your heels clicked sharply against the lobby floor as you headed toward the building entrance without waiting for her. Usually she was the one setting the pace while you hurried after her. Today you pushed through the front doors first.
And you didn't hold them open.
The cool morning air hit your face immediately.
You crossed your arms tightly over your chest and waited at the crosswalk while traffic rolled through the intersection. A bus groaned past. Somewhere farther down the street someone honked their horn.
A moment later Sevika appeared beside you. You could feel her looking down at you. "Are you pouting?" She asked amused.
You rolled your eyes so hard it almost hurt.
The crosswalk signal finally changed.
"No," you said, immediately sounding like someone who was absolutely pouting. "But you're being awfully rude for a boss who called me into work on a day she promised I'd have off."
You started across the street before she could answer.
The sound of her loafers followed beside you.
Neither of you spoke again until you reached her car.
The black Mercedes sat waiting near the curb, polished enough to reflect the morning sunlight. You stopped beside the passenger door and stared at the handle.
You stopped beside the passenger door and simply stood there, your purse hanging from one shoulder while you stared pointedly at the handle. The morning air brushed against your face, carrying the scent of rain-soaked pavement and car exhaust from the street beyond. You didn't say a word.
After a few seconds, Sevika realized exactly what you were doing.
Her brows slowly climbed upward.
The look she gave you was somewhere between disbelief and irritation.
"Oh, for fuck's sake." The curse left her under her breath as she hurried around the front of the Mercedes. Sunlight flashed briefly across the windshield as she moved.
She reached the passenger side and yanked the door open with far more force than necessary.
The leather seat was cool beneath you as you settled in, smoothing your skirt over your thighs and placing your purse in your lap. The scent of the car surrounded you immediately. Leather, expensive cologne, and the faint lingering trace of cigar smoke that always seemed to follow Sevika wherever she went.
The door shut with a heavy thunk.
A moment later, Sevika rounded the front of the vehicle and slid into the driver's seat. She looked thoroughly unimpressed as she pulled the door closed behind her. The Mercedes hummed softly to life when she inserted the key and turned it. The engine purred beneath you, smooth and expensive.
You watched her adjust the rearview mirror.
Then her grip on the steering wheel.
You turned toward her in your seat, studying the sharp line of her jaw and the tension lingering in her shoulders.
"Seriously," you said at last, narrowing your eyes. "What's your problem?"
For a moment she didn't answer.
She simply stared through the windshield while her fingers tightened slightly around the steering wheel.
Then she shrugged. "I didn't realize you had your girlfriend over."
The words settled between you.
For a second, your brain seemed to stop working.
The realization slowly spread across your face as all the strange comments from the morning suddenly clicked into place. The coffee question. The attitude. The cold shoulder. The way she'd looked at Vi when she walked into your apartment.
A laugh escaped before you could stop it.
Within seconds you were completely losing it.
You doubled over in your seat, one hand clutching your stomach while the other covered your mouth in a failed attempt to contain yourself. Your shoulders shook violently as laughter spilled out of you. The more you thought about it, the worse it became.
Tears gathered in the corners of your eyes.
"You thought—" you gasped, trying and failing to catch your breath. "You thought Vi was my girlfriend?"
Another burst of laughter hit you immediately.
Your forehead nearly touched your knees.
The entire situation was so absurd that it bordered on unbelievable. All morning you'd been trying to figure out what had put Sevika in such a foul mood, convinced you'd somehow offended her without realizing it.
And all along she'd been jealous.
The realization only made you laugh harder.
Across from you, Sevika remained perfectly still behind the steering wheel, her jaw tightening more with every sound that left your mouth.
That did absolutely nothing to help.
In fact, seeing her expression only made it worse.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Sevika kept her eyes fixed firmly on the road ahead as she spoke. The words came out a little too quickly, a little too stiffly. Her hands remained locked around the steering wheel, knuckles pressing faintly against the leather.
Not as hard as before, but enough that your shoulders shook. "You absolutely do."
A muscle jumped in her jaw. "I don't."
You leaned back in your seat and turned fully toward her, one arm draped across the center console as a grin spread across your face.
"You thought I slept with Vi." You teased lowly.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Sevika's grip tightened immediately.
You watched her fingers flex against the steering wheel.
Watched her stare even harder through the windshield.
"Whatever you have going on with Vi is none of my business," Sevika said flatly as she turned the wheel. "I'm just your boss."
You snorted and folded your arms across your chest before sinking farther into the leather seat.
"Yeah, sure." The city rolled past outside the windows while you shook your head. "I don't think bosses do what you did yesterday."
Sevika's eyes flicked toward you briefly before returning to the road. "I wouldn't have if I'd known about you and Vi."
You let out an exasperated laugh and dragged a hand down your face. "Why are you insisting I'm with her?"
Her brow furrowed immediately. "Because she was half-naked." She glanced at you again. "And so were you."
You groaned and leaned your head back against the seat. "Oh my God."
The courthouse came into view ahead of you, its stone exterior catching the morning sunlight. Sevika guided the Mercedes into the parking lot while you stared at her in disbelief.
"Cait broke up with her," you explained. "She was upset, so I let her sleep over." You let out a small chuckle and shook your head. "That's literally all that happened."
The car slowed into a parking space.
For a moment, Sevika said nothing. Her expression shifted almost imperceptibly.
The tension that had been sitting in her shoulders since she'd arrived at your apartment seemed to ease. Her mouth twitched slightly, like she was trying very hard not to react.
A smile spread across your face.
"Don't worry." You reached over and lightly touched her forearm. "Vi and I are nothing but friends." Your voice softened. "Just friends."
Sevika exhaled slowly through her nose.
The crease between her brows finally disappeared.
You couldn't help smiling wider.
The reaction was impossible to miss.
Without looking directly at you, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her keys along with her credit card. She placed both into your hand before finally meeting your eyes again.
"Go get us coffee." Her tone was perfectly professional.
Unfortunately for her, the faint hint of relief on her face had already given her away.
Jealous sevika oh yeah im hungry
