I needed to paint something, because for me this is one of THE BERSERK SCENES and it's one of the moments that shifted my perception of the story.

The other day I found a griffguts edit to Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights and it genuinely opened my third eye on how similar some of their dynamics are to Heathcliff and Catherine’s in the book, specifically the scene where Heathcliff catches Cathy talking about him with Nelly and misunderstands that she disregards him as lower than she wants, which leads him to leave and drives her into madness and eventually death. What do you think about it? I’m truly curious since I really love your speeches and theories about them, and I’ve had this thought tickling my brain for a while.

Ooh I didn't remember that at all. I only read the book once in high school and didn't retain much, but yeah I see what you mean, sounds very similar.

Sorry that I can't expand on the comparison, since again I don't remember nearly enough about Wuthering Heights, but if anyone else wants to jump in and point out similarities or disagree please do!

i think that's where the similarities start and end somewhat. but i do think that heathcliff/cathy comparisons are much more applicable to another pair in berserk: serpico and farnese. granted, serpico is much more levelheaded than heathcliff, and serpico/farnese is much more implied than outright compared to heathcliff/cathy, but there are similarities:

of course, incest. serpico and farnese are half-siblings with serpico born out of wedlock and of a lower social class. farnese doesn't know they're siblings but serpico and the audience knows. their dynamic easily fits in well with the gothic understanding of the incest trope especially when compared to heathcliff/cathy. in WH, cathy and heathcliff are raised as siblings who eventually fall in love. heathcliff is cathy's adopted sibling but is often ostracized by other members of the family for his social and racial status. immediately, this draws parallels to serpico and farnese, minus the outright ostracizing as most of the vandimions aren't aware of serpico's parentage and he is also white.

cathy says: "he is more myself than i am. whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same. ... he’s always, always in my mind; not as a pleasure to myself, but as my own being." cathy loves heathcliff in that she loves herself, in that he is a part of her. there's a similar trend with how farnese and serpico are written:

in WH, cathy choosing to marry someone other than heathcliff can be seen as her denying her true self in order to fit in with society. marrying heathcliff - her non-white brother, would be social suicide. thus, within gothic understanding, sibling incest here is seen as a way to deny social pressure and social conformity. funnily enough, when farnese is put into an arranged marriage, she runs to serpico to take her away:

"i can't leave this place" / "i can't live anywhere other than here" also personally reminds me of how cathy's soul lives in wuthering heights. just like heathcliff and cathy, serpico and farnese's dynamic is so essentially tied to their lives at the vandimion manor.

also, farnese and serpico frequently going to the back of vandimion manor and into the forest, where they spend a lot of time together. it's very "heathcliff and cathy playing in the moors surrounding wuthering heights", the very setting of their love. likewise it's a no-brainer that farnese asks serpico to take her away in the forest behind vandimion manor, their own version of the WH moors.
