My take on Harris (aka Barris aka Black + Bear Harris)

Harris is a fat black man with a wide smile, facing the viewer directly. His smile is pushing his eyes into a squint and his hands are on his hips, like he is posing for a photo. He has dark facial hair that falls somewhere between a beard and stubble. His black hair is in several braids. One braid, coming from his left temple, has a black and a red bead on the end of it. He is wearing a red toque with a black pompom and a centaur logo in the center. There is prominent hair visible on his legs and on then backs of his hands.
Harris is wearing an oversized Jean jacket that has brown leather elbow patches and has red plaid fabric lining the collar and cuffs. There is an enamel pin of an apple on his left breast pocket. The jacket also has pins for the Ottawa Gay Men’s Chorus, the Heart and Stoke Foundation, and the progress Pride flag. The right sleeve has a Canadian flag patch on it. The jacket has triangular gussets under each arm made from crème colored fabric with little red apples on it. Under the jacket, he is wearing a plain red sweatshirt. There is a rainbow friendship bracelet on his left wrist.
He is wearing cut-off jorts that are a similar shade of light-wash denim as the jacket. The jorts are held up by a brown belt with a comically large silver buckle, which has two embossed apple trees in the center. Harris has on black knee-high compression socks and classic timberland boots.
There is text on the right side of the image, pointing to various things about Harris’ design. Next to his head, there are two points saying “toque with satin lining” and “Afro mullet; currently in braids”. His neck has a point saying “medical ID necklace”. A point on his jacket says “gussets to add space” and a point at his wrist/waist says “bracelets and big ass buckle”. His legs have three points stating “unseasonal jorts,” “compression socks,” and “timbs with fun laces.”

Pose is based off of this image of Abbeye “Pudgy” Stockton, one of the icons of Santa Monica’s “Muscle Beach” scene. I think that Malevola being based off of 70’s sex icons and women power lifters is epic, of course, but I think the women of Muscle Beach are a meaningful reference to make, considering Dispatch’s SoCal setting.

Kya, from Avatar: the Last Airbender, is a woman from the Southern Water Tribe. She appears to be in her early thirties, with faint lines under her eyes and on her cheeks. She has warm brown skin, dark brown hair, and grey eyes. She has a wide, flat nose, two-toned lips, and a mole under her left (image right) eye. She is wearing a blue-grey parka with blue beads along the upper arms and waist, mimicking flows of water. The beads are trimmed with fur and, on her arms, with a strip of fish-scale leather. At her waist, there is a broach with a beaded water droplet design. To either side of the broach is an ivory button, carved with crescent moons. A long, decorative tail of fur hangs beneath the broach. She wears blue mittens with matching fur trim. The hood of the parka is pulled back slightly on her head, showing her neck and the front of her hair. The hood is trimmed with fur in a “sunshine” style, where blends of fur create the effect of a sun ray. Her hair is pulled back into two “loopies”. The loopie on the the right side of her face (image left) has three beads, one large and two small, in varying shades of blue. She wears her betrothal necklace, which is a choker of dark blue ribbon with a circle of ivory in the center. The ivory is carved with swirling waves.
She stands close to the viewer. Her legs are cut out of frame at mid-thigh and there is empty air above her. Her hands in front of her chest, palms out. There is a blob of water floating in front of her hands. She looking down and smiling in front of her, where the back of a child’s hooded head is visible. The child reaches their hands, wearing matching blue mittens, towards Kya and the water blob. The back of the child’s hood has a beaded stripe, loosely invoking the head-arrow on air benders.
The position of Kya and the child suggests that the child is a young Katara, using her water bending to pretend that her mother is also a bender. Kya appears to be playing along, with her hands held up like she is the one floating the blob.
The background is a vague and blurry scene on the South Pole landscape. The snowy ground, smooth sea, and pale sky blur into each other. The image has a blue vignette, where Kya’s face is clear and bright and the rest of the image is tinted a faded blue. The effect is that of a distant memory or a near-forgotten dream, where Kya’s face remains even as everything else falls into obscurity.

A significant point of inspiration/reference for my take on Kya are the doll portraits of Inupiat artist Dolly Spencer. Kya’s sunshine ruff was inspired by Spencer’s Carry McLain doll and the wave patterns on her clothes were inspired by the Fisher Woman doll. You can view these works by searching Dolly Spencer on the Alaska State Museum collection website.

Princess Yue, from Avatar: The Last Airbender is a teenage girl from the Northern Water Tribe. Her long, silvery-white hair falls loose down her back in soft waves. She has brown skin and luminous blue eyes. There are crescent moons painted in white on the apples of her cheeks. Her lips are parted in a slight smile and she looks up and slightly to the right of the viewer.
She is wearing a sealskin parka with a slight lavender tint. A strip of purple ribbon, lined with seed pearls, circles her biceps. The parka has a thick ruff if white fur along the collar. Yue's head is tilted to the right (image left), nestled into the fluff. On top of her parka, but tucked under the fur of her ruff, Yue wears an elaborately beaded yoke. The beads are a mix of blues, white, and black, looking like starlight reflecting off of rippling water.
The facts that her hair is down, the parka and gloves she is wearing are lightweight, and her warm smile imply that she is dressed somewhat casually or informally, and is amongst friends or family.
She is angled slightly to the left (image right) and the image is cut off at her waist. Her left arm is down at her side, tucked slightly behind her torso. Her right arm is folded up, so that her hand is resting next to her heart. She is wearing a three-fingered mitten made of purple fabric. It is trimmed in the same white fur as her ruff. A circle of abalone shell, bordered with silvery-blue beads, is on the back of her hand.
The background of the image is of the night sky, either just before dawn or just after dusk. The sky above her head is a dark indigo, getting slightly lighter as it goes down. Centered on her head, a the shadow of a new moon blocks out the stars in the sky around her.
Yue is illuminated by a warm light source coming from her left (image right). It gilds her in a contrast of gold light and violet shadow.
