said it before and i'll say it again, reanimator/bride of reanimator is a frankenstein story but the Creature counterpart isn't any of the corpses Herbert experiments on or even the Bride it's Dan. Obviously I'm not discounting Dan's agency in the shit he ends up getting himself into, but the very fact that Herbert willingly shares his research and figures out exactly how to appeal to Dan's character flaws to convince him to help are how Herbert takes what seems to at first glance be a very chill and normal guy and peels back the layers to reveal the fellow freak that Dan is at his core. Herbert sees in Dan a man who is obsessed with beating death like himself. The main difference being that for Herbert it's about gaining knowledge and the thrill of breaking one of the fundamental laws of the universe, while for Dan it's about a toxic inability to let go, a refusal to reconcile with a fundamental aspect of the career he has chosen to pursue. And sure there's probably some ego in there too. Even losing one patient is enough to thoroughly devastate Dan so yeah of course he's prime for a little emotional manipulation. What if you could save them, Dan? What if you never had to experience that failure ever gain?

Dan goes from a promising young medical student with a fiance and a bright future to a man who has thoroughly compromised his own ethical code to the point that Herbert has to offer to build him a new girlfriend to keep him from going rogue and leaving him due to how disgusted Dan has become with himself.

It's all just such a beautiful almost inverse take on a Frankenstein-Creature relationship where the scientist loves his creation and will do anything to keep him close.

What if I took you and remade you as monstrous as I am? What if you were seen as completely normal to everyone around you, only to know that deep within, you were a strange broken thing that only I could understand and see you as you are and love you for it? What if I begged for you to stay with me by offering to build you a companion around the heart of the woman you loved?

While I do get why they cut out the whole "Herbert shooting himself up with Reagent" plotline from the film, I wish they had kept it, purely because the scene where Herbert's hands are shaking too much to use the syringe on himself and he immediatly puts on his pitiful pleading sad eyes to get Dan to do it for him really captures how weak-willed Dan is for that maniac.

Dan's Savior Complex extends beyond his desire to save lives, and for all his griping and moaning about ethics and morals he will fold like a house of cards when Herbert asks him for anything, ESPECIALLY in the first film.
