Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

8 Things to Give Up
1. Self rejection
2. Negative self-talk
3. Criticising others
4. Being a people pleaser
5. Fear of failure
6. Procrastination
7. Holding onto grudges
8. Expecting perfection
Which is sadder, a finished fire or a spark that never turned into a flame?

Views from the cathedral of Milan, Italy. Such a beautiful place.
My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to find peace with exactly who and what I am. To take pride in my thoughts, my appearance, my talents, my flaws and to stop this incessant worrying that I can’t be loved as I am.

1. Take better care of yourself. You’ve only got one body to live with; treat it kindly. Stay hydrated and eat foods that won’t make you feel lethargic or bloated, but never forget to treat yourself every now and then. Get up and do something — go for a long walk around the neighbourhood and take a friend, dust off your running shoes or yoga mat. Just take the first step. 2. Sleep earlier, wake up earlier. You may be a night person by nature, but staying up until 4am on Tumblr and dragging yourself through the day isn’t natural. Understand that it’s okay to put aside homework and call it a night at 10pm. You’ll get more out of yourself when you’re well rested. Mornings aren’t so bad. 3. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Sometimes you’ll mess up; maybe you’ll forget about something that’s due, or miss going to the gym for two weeks in a row. You’re not a failure or a disappointment; you’re a work in progress. Breathe, and try again. It’s just a small stumble in a very long journey. 4. Apologize and empathize freely. Acknowledging when you’re wrong or out of line is a skill set that not a lot of people master; it’s even rarer when someone says they’re sorry for it. Recognize that not everyone will see the world the way you do, but you can try to see it from their perspective. What might be a passing comment to you, could be a crushing insult to someone else. Set pride aside and apologize, sincerely. 5. Impress yourself. Even if it’s small things, like managing to run for three minutes straight without hacking up a lung. Maybe you gathered the courage to finally ask out the person you’ve been eyeing for the past month. Take your victories as they come; they are yours alone. 6. Accept opportunities. Push yourself out of your comfort zone every now and then. It’s safe and comfortable to retreat into obscurity; the outside world can be scary at times, but don’t let it consume you. Even if your anxiety makes you second guess and fear the worst; try. Say yes. I can guarantee it’ll almost always be a great adventure. 7. Don’t fear mistakes or embarrassment. Everyone messes up sometimes. Even the most skilled man was a novice once. Don’t let the fear of messing up kill your curiosity or passion. Ignore the invisible spectators that jeer at you from the dark corners of your head. 8. You can do it. Realize that you are capable. Don’t undermine yourself with negativity before you’ve even tried. Stop saying you’re not smart enough, not pretty enough, not funny enough. You are enough. You can break down walls if you put as much energy into believing in yourself as you do in putting yourself down. 9. Work on time management. Every year you tell yourself that you’ll do everything in steps so that you’ll be prepared for every deadline. Every year you find yourself hunched over a computer in the wee hours of the morning trying to do three months of work in one night. Find time to devote to your work. Shut the computer. Mute the phone. Your grades and brain will thank you in the end. 10. Get minimalistic. Let go of some of the things you’ve been holding onto from the past few years. Clean up your closet, throw away the trinkets you don’t use that still find a home in your drawers, whittle down your toiletries to the things you really use. Declutter your computer files and camera rolls. It’s like a deep pore cleanse for your life. 11. Try something new. Write that story that’s been itching at the back of your mind, then submit it to a journal or newspaper. Pick up the camera and start making videos. Grab a cookbook and start picking meals you’d like to try to cook, then add your own twist. Learn to knit. Starting something new doesn’t have to be a massive lifestyle change; sometimes it’s taking what you already love and going a step further with it. 12. Find the joy in learning again. Stop being so apathetic towards classes and school. Sit up in your seat and actively pay attention to what’s being taught to you. Remember when you were eight and learning about the world was the best thing ever? Be that kid. Don’t let yourself mindlessly mirror the apathy of other students. 13. Ask for help. Teachers and TAs are there to give you feedback and clarify anything that you’re having difficulty with. Parents and guardians don’t expect you to gracefully transition into adulthood. Festering in your confusion isn’t helping anyone. It’s okay to ask someone for a helping hand when you’re overwhelmed. 14. Speak up. Let your opinions be heard; they’re not dumb or useless. If you have a question, ask. If you have an idea, say something. Your voice is important. Don’t let your fear silence you. 15. Read more. You used to be a kid who blew through books like no ones business. Find time to read again; even if it’s just a short story or a re-read of an old favourite. Make a dent in that TBR pile that keeps growing by the day. 16. Make other people’s day. Give to the less fortunate, hand out compliments to strangers and best friends, leave a generous tip for your waiter or waitress, speak kindly to the flustered cashier when they mess up a sale. Make the world a little less of a cruel place.
