You’re a regular visitor at your local marine rescue center. You love seeing all of the different mers and it makes you feel good that your ticket money is going towards helping them. You love all of the different mers in every exhibit but the largest one is your very favorite. He’s a beautiful 30 foot long whale shark mer and unreleasable due to a boat strike. You spend extra time at his exhibit and simply admire him as he swims. You watch his spots as he disappears and reappears in the blue of his massive tank, watching as he smiles and waves at you every time he sees you.
Eventually, you’re able to get a position as a volunteer and visit him every weekend to take your turn taking care of him. You feed him and check him over for any abnormalities. You help clean his tank and eventually, you’re allowed to physically interact with him after taking a training course. You sit in the shallows of the medical pool attached to his tank and wait for him to come to you while your supervisor watches. The shark mer, affectionately named Clark, slowly swims over to you and stares at you with those big blue eyes. You’ve never been this close to him before. You tentatively reach out towards him with a shaky hand, your nervousness on clear display.
The mer beams at you and gently bonks his forehead against your hand. Your eyes widen as you feel the texture of his human-like facial skin blending into the rough and somewhat scratchy shark skin that make up the spotty grey outlining his face. You gasp at the sudden transition in sensation from wet sandpaper to soft almost-hair. You can see why mers were confused to be relatives of humans during the early days of science. Nowadays, it’s a well known fact that mer “hair” is a specialized sensory organ meant to help them gather information about their environments. That doesn’t stop it from feeling incredibly soft.
The mer nuzzles into your hand as you gently scratch at his “scalp,” knowing that it’s a common and appropriate greeting within his species. His black curls shift under your touch like the tendrils of a compass jellyfish when it catches prey, though you know that he’s simply doing his version of smelling you. His webbed hands gently touch your arms and legs before touching your hair in an affectionate greeting, not unlike what you would see from an older mer to a pup. He lets you touch his fins and simply relaxes as you pet the back of his tail with specialized gloves so that your hands don’t get scratched up. All goes smoothly until your supervisor climbs into the pool and the gentle giant decides not to be so gentle. One aggressive smack from his tail sends your supervisor out of the water and into the far wall as he scoops you up and rushes back into the depths of his tank faster than you've ever seen him move. Thankfully, he seems to understand that you need to breathe and sets you on his back as he contentedly circles around the massive pool. You hold onto his dorsal fin like a mer pup, unsure of what else you can do as Clark contentedly swims, enjoying the company of the pup that he longed to protect ever since your first visit to the rescue center.
