Picked up my story again today. Feeling out my characters and world beyond sexy and magic. I mean I love me some sexy characters, but they can’t just be happy go lucky or broody for no reason, right? Struggling with the personality of my protagonist. Love interests, friends, enemies, I’ve got a fairly good feel for, but how do I write a quiet rebellious prankster?

Oh, is it that time of year again?
I really recommend the Táin Bó Cúailnge to anyone looking to get into medieval literature because it's a great story, brilliant poetry (I read the Carson translation, and the way he translates the roscada sections are beautiful) and the backbone of the Ulster Cycle, but it's also just really fucking funny. It has a very slapstick yet dry sense of humor that provides just enough comic relief to make the dramatic moments of the story even more impactful. Genuinely I laugh out loud every few pages. Go read it.

General rules to live by:
You gotta be tough if you're gonna be stupid. You can do stupid shit all you want but you're not going to avoid suffering consequences.
If you can't be tough, you gotta be nice. People can forgive a lot of stupidity if you're polite about it and pleasant to be around.

I’ve got 2 yards of beautiful fabric I want to turn into a tiered skirt, but it feels like I’m letting the fabric down unless I make it *SPECIAL*. I’ve found a complementary scrap I might be able to use for an accent, but also, maybe I should make some lace for it?
Thread I have on hand for tatting into lace. The white is the largest and will make the thickest lace. The pink I think will add the most flair, but it’s a second hand thread so I have no idea if I can get more if I run out. Decisions!

“scientists don’t want you know” is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know
Like they 1000% want you to know so badly, they subject themselves to multiple critiques and checks in order to be able to publish their information for as many people to read it as possible.
I’m a mess, but I made myself some ice cream at home tonight because I have left over cream.
1 C cream, 1 C milk, scant 1/3 C white sugar, tsp vanilla extract
Put in sandwich bag and remove as much air as possible before sealing. Dump 2 ice trays worth of ice in a gallon bag. Add canning salt to the ice. Add sealed sandwich bag to the ice. Remove as much air as possible before sealing gallon bag. Wrap in towel to keep your hands from freezing. Roll around until you feel the liquid thicken (~10 min)
Drop half into a cup for immediate consumption. Put the rest in the freezer for tomorrow night.
I’m kinda surprised that nalbinding isn’t as popular as crochet and knitting tbh because it has an even lower barrier of entry tools wise and unlike crochet and knitting it makes fabric that you can cut.
I guess it’s because it’s slower or something.
Nalbinding aka needle binding is when you use yarn and a big sewing needle to make fabric btw
It also has a lot of different kinds of stitches you can do that make different densities of fabric.
Some people even make rugs.
I feel like part of it might be casual people are generally aware of the existence of crochet and knitting, even if they don’t know very much about either, but have never heard of nalbinding
Yeah I hadn’t heard of it until recently and I ordered a big bone needle for myself to try it out and that should be arriving soon.
I was surprised that I’d never heard of it though. It’s older than knitting and crocheting and even though it’s been done all over the world it’s super relevant to Nordic culture and my grandmother and I are both into keeping in touch with our roots a bit so I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it.
It seems like the sort of thing that would be popular even if not as popular as crocheting and knitting, considering the low barrier of entry.
You also don’t need a bunch of different sized needles for nalbinding or whatever. The size of the stitch is controlled either completely freehand or by pulling it against one of your fingers. Most people who have a lot of nalbinding needles seem to either have tried out wood, bone, and metal ones to see which kind they liked or they enjoy carving wood or bone and like making their own needles as an extra hobby.
It’s also a lot easier to freehand and adjust as you go than crochet or knitting and you mostly go by inches instead of rows and number of stitches so a large number of accessories like stitch markers or whatever isn’t really necessary.
Maybe the lack of accessories also makes it unpopular idk. People do like collecting things in their nests.
I've been wanting to do so, I cannot find anyone who can teach me, and any books I can find on it are Ass in the Visual Learning department. Otherwise I'd be making the hell outta some nalbinded fabric
