Tournament Wrap-up
four months, thousands of votes, 72 constants and we have a winner! i had a lot of fun running this, and i hope everyone had fun participating. my goal here was to celebrate Canadian media, which often gets swept under the rug in the heavily American (and to a lesser extent British) popular culture. maybe this inspired you (as it inspired me!) to read a new book or watch a new movie, and if it did, it's a success in my book.
there will be a second tournament at some point in the future, and i will be recruiting more mods then, because i think a bigger tournament with more indie media brought into the spotlight would be really great. it was just me this time, because i honestly didn't think people would really care and i didn't want to bother anyone else.
thank you for going on this journey with me, and i hope you'll be back next time as well! in the meantime, i can be found (infrequently) @gladiatordonut in the rare case that you'll miss my running commentary ;)
Also shout out to our runner-up: Anne Shirley!
TORIKO NISHINA HAS WON THE FICTIONAL CANADIAN SHOWDOWN!
She has been voted the Ultimate Fictional Canadian! Congratulations to Toriko!
"donate to gaza" "humanitarian aid to gaza" "raise money for gaza" and egypt, gaza's neighbor that has the only border through which aid can get through, cannot currently get aid through to gaza because israel is refusing to let the trucks pass. the gate was supposed to open three hours ago in a deal struck between egypt and the US to let foreign gaza nationals out and humanitarian aid in. now israel is denying it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement: "There is currently no truce and humanitarian aid in Gaza in exchange for getting foreigners out." and this is after israel bombed the border crossing three times in the past week. this is the reality that's happening right now. the tonnes of aid that countries are donating, the money the EU is promising, all of this is NOT GETTING THROUGH TO GAZA. if egyptians cannot get through to gaza, nobody can!!!!! the only fucking way this happens is through international pressure to hold israel accountable and that is currently not happening!!!
this is genocide. israel is a fascist state with genocidal maniacs in charge, and they want gazans obliterated, they want gaza gone. this is genocide happening right in front of us. and the entire first world has sanctioned it.
ONLY POLITICAL PRESSURE ON THE ISRAELI GOV IS GOING TO ACHIEVE ANYTHING RIGHT NOW:
USA Citizens sign here for a call to Congress: Stop the Gaza Genocide
Tell your members of Congress to stop fueling the genocide in Gaza.
UK Citizens sign this template to email your MP
The UK government must act urgently to protect Palestinians civilians and health workers.
canadian citizens sign here to email your mp
More than ever, the people of Gaza need our help. Send an email to your local representative and demand the Government of Canada secure an i
USA citizens: This will put you on a call. I know you don't want to do a phone call, but it's simple, no pressure, and the system they have set up will handle everything.
Put in your info
you'll receive a call that will put you in contact with your senators and representative
They have a script that will allow you to leave a message.
DONT HANG UP! press star and it'll move you onto the next call.
It's quick, painless, and it's something you can actually do that might help.
so can we start hunting down white liberals now or what
The full picture is even more heart breaking after you open the uncropped version. Just a heads-up, it's rough
“The Roman Catholic Parish in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was just grafitted.”
Nah let’s post it. Let’s feel it. Don’t look away.
I notice alot of my followers on here skipping these posts just to mess with my lgbt ones, suspiciously the white popular ones.
Heres a not so friendly reminder, as an lgbt metis person, i dont give a single fuck what your blog is themed or if this is too painful for you to look at. Reblog this post. Reblog this post with the sources of the 751 children who were found.
Your compliance and silence as well as the compliance and silence of your ancestors is what allowed these schools to open and kill first nations children. The children of MY people.
Dont follow me if you cant reblog this post or the one with sources to your political blog or your most popular blog. Add trigger warnings if you must but if your political blog is only focused on the harms you personally face like being lgbt then you need to see some bigger pictures and stop being afraid of angering your racist mutural or actually saying some shit about racism. If you can reblog some antifa graphics or add blm to your bio to be a surface level ally, you can reblog some sources on the genocide first nations people faced and still face today.
They were CHILDREN.
They were murdered in cold blood.
I’d like to add this photo I took last night in Victoria of the statue of Captain Cook. Though I myself am not indigenous, I 100% agree that these murderers, kidnappers and rapists shouldn’t have huge statues and plaques that decorate them and say how “great” they were.
Here’s another photo of the legislative assembly from yesterday. Later on there were more items, candles and signs at the memorial, as well as a big poster with 1505 painted on it but I didn’t get a picture
People need to see this. Not just quickly glance at the photos and keep on scrolling. They need to see this.
Reblog this or just stop following me
I had seen the first picture of the church, but not the second.
I went to a “Cancel Canada Day” event and burst into tears - not because I was surprised to learn of the unmarked graves (survivors told us they were there. Our government pushed it aside, and we let them), but because seeing all the people gathered in mourning drove it home: They. Were. Children.
This is my country’s legacy - and it’s not history. The last schools closed during my lifetime. My Father went to school with students who lived at the local residential school, after it was changed to a boarding house (read: holding centre) for indigenous youth who went to local schools.
They were all children, injured, abused, and killed in my country’s attempt to erase them. I want the world to see this and hold the state accountable to *active* reconciliation> I mean we could at least truly adopt UNDRIP in action instead of words for god’s sake.
here you can read an article about a survivor of the church and some of the things he experienced to help put into perspective how awful and just how recent it was
this is the memorial at the vancouver art gallery. 215+ pairs of children’s shoes (as well as stuffed toys and flowers) cover the steps…
I can never feel free as a queer person until the indigenous peoples are free.
Fictional Canadian Showdown: FINAL ROUND
Anne Shirley, Anne of Green Gables
Toriko Nishina, Otherside Picnic
This is it folks! The round you've all been waiting for, the time we decide who is the ULTIMATE FICTIONAL CANADIAN.
It's been a tough battle. We have had over 70 contestants, spanning every province and territory expect the Northwest Territories. They've covered a variety of different mediums, from webcomics to video games to movies to poetry and more. Our oldest came from a poem published in 1847, while we also had one from a currently updating webcomic.
Of those figures, some towering figures of Canadiana, some more unknown (that I hope this blog helped get them a tiny little smidge of much deserved limelight) only two remain. Those are:
Anne Shirley is from Anne of Green Gables, a book by Lucy Maude Montgomery that has been turned into everything from a ballet to an animated children’s tv show. Anne has multiple museums, a theme park, two stamps from Canada Post and is a cornerstone of PEI’s tourism industry.
Anne is fanciful, imaginative, eager to please, and dramatic. She is also adamant her name should always be spelt with an "e" at the end
And
Toriko Nishina (blonde) is from Otherside Picnic a novel series/anime. From submitter: Silly lesbian who explores an alternate world full of internet creepypasta with her gf. knows a lot about guns. has two moms.
Who will win? Who will take home the poorly photoshopped crown?
you know what this tells me? y'all are fucking STARVED for canadian lesbian content

Toriko’s a lesbian who’s textually had sex with another girl. Anne isn’t. It’s that simple—vote Toriko!
