I found myself an adorable new reading buddy. Now we are practicing the very important skill of chilling while mom reads, which is very challenging when there’s a whole big world to explore! Favorite books of 2018 part two: new releases. I’ve read a lot of wonderful new releases this year and I originally pulled out 10 books that I considered the best of the year so far. But looking at that stack, these four stood out significantly. These are the books that I continue to think about and recommend and the ones I know will be long time favorites. My only complaint about my own reading habits this year so far is that while my backlist books have contained a lot of variety, most of the new releases I’ve read have been literary fiction novels by white women. I’d love to read more new releases by authors of color as well as some new genre fiction (I’m particularly hoping to add some YA and fantasy) to my TBR pile over the next six months. I’m quite newly introduced to Kate Morton, but I can tell you I fell hard. The two books of hers I’ve now read (The Forgotten Garden and The Secret Keeper) have everything I want in a page turner: strong women protagonists, multigenerational drama, subtle literary references, and an element of mystery. Morton’s books are exactly the type of book that makes me feel compelled to read because I need to know what happens without feeling like I’m being manipulated by the author. I’m pretty sure she has at least three other published books and another due out in the fall so I am very excited to keep reading! For the 4th of July, here are some of my favorite American books plus 2 I plan to read soon. I’m lucky enough to teach American literature and a lot of the books I would have liked to include here (Adichie, Baldwin, Cisneros, Morrison) live in my classroom in the hopes that they’ll end up in a student’s hands. Every year teaching AmLit feels like a tremendous responsibility. Teachers selecting books for this class, literally craft the story of America for our students. I want my students to see the range of the American idea from Native American folktales to John Winthrop’s “City on a Hill” to Toni Morrison’s depiction on an America haunted by the ghost of slavery. And I want them to discover as many perspectives as possible well beyond this stack I’ve gathered. I don’t think I’ve gotten it right yet, but every year I push myself to do a little more and be a little better. We’re halfway through 2018, and so far it’s been a fantastic year of friends, family, travel, and—most of all—reading. First, the deep cut Shakespearean names! Things don’t end well for Shakespeare’s Lavinia and Cordelia so I’m worried about these girls 😬 Second, I am so into the nod to Sleep No More and the McKittrick Hotel. Otherwise I’m hoping to get a little further before making any judgments. I’m not enamored with any of the characters yet but I have high hopes for some creepy plot twists. |@aaknopf #partner| I started and finished The Book of Essie this weekend. This is a very impressive debut novel! I was immediately hooked by this story and found Essie to be a very relatable character given the extremely unusual circumstances of her life. I truly loved all three POV characters and found myself rooting for them so hard, I just couldn’t put this book down until I new what became of them all! I found a few flaws with the book. Mainly I thought the ended wrapped up way too. Additionally I worried that the highly unusual aspects of the characters lives could distract from an issue that doesn’t solely face highly unusual families. I definitely think Meghan Maclean Weir managed to tell this story without too much spectacle and she definitely addressed a lot of my concerns towards the end. Overall, I loved this book in spite of some flaws and definitely recommend it! #TheBookOfEssie #RecentlyRead #ReadWomen #PrettyBooks #IGReads #FictionMatters
