An observation

Guys, can we talk about how, in the brick, Eponine was well on her way to becoming exactly like her mother and father; she frequently consumes alcohol, she forges letters to the rich asking for money, and she actually spent a few nights in jail. Her love for Marius is what ultimately saves her. In dying, she performs one final act of bravery and selflessness, and ultimately redeems herself by saving Marius. Her devotion to Marius saves her from following in her parents' footsteps. It saves her from living a life of cruelty and corruption. Her devotion to Marius is what redeems her, and I just find that so incredibly beautiful. To borrow a quote from Victor Hugo:

Love has no middle term; either it destroys, or it saves.

When I first read the book, I thought that love destroyed Eponine, since it led to her death. I now realize how wrong I was. Her love for Marius saved her. There's just something so poignant and poetic about Eponine's arc in the story.
