He had decided to get something quick to eat before heading home, but now he was feeling a little guilty. The employee who was trying to take his order was clearly not having a good day. Although he didn’t want to flat out tell them in front of other customers behind him. Making a scene would only make things worse. It was obvious that he knew something was wrong, since he momentarily paused.
“Sorry I’m late. The boat ride took longer than I expected.” What are you saying? You don’t even work here. OK. It’s Okay, I can work with this. “I’m a new employee, so where should I start?” First off he wasn’t an employee, but there was openings for more employees. He worked at the Frying Pan, so he had some experience.Hopefully the other woman wouldn’t take this badly.
Besides he wasn’t going to do anything bad, or at least try to. The good thing is that he knew the menu from coming here often. The problem if he were to cook would be this would be his first time cooking a different menu.
Odette stared blankly at the man for a second. She didn’t mean to be rude! His words were just so surprising that it caught the vulnerable woman off guard. A new employee?
“I didn’t hear about-” And then it clicked. She glanced behind the man and saw all the other customers. He was giving her an out! The sweet gesture made Odette tear up a bit more, but she quickly shut that down.
“Right! The new employee,” she stammered. She really shouldn’t be doing this, but she was desperate. And the customers were already being taken care of by some of the other employees... “Well, you could, uh, come help me out in the kitchen. We’re a little understaffed back there today, so I could...show you the ropes.”
Odette lead him into the kitchen, and immediately started cleaning up the burnt mess she made. “I’m so, so sorry about this, sir. I shouldn’t have brought you back here, but this week has been a disaster, and I guess it was a lapse in judgment-” She took a breath and turned around, ruined dish in hand. “Thank you. For doing what you did. I should have lead with that. You really didn’t have to, though. I’m sure you just came in for some food, and I promise I’m a better chef than I look right now. How about something on the house?” She was floundering at this point.
“Get away from her!” Was the signal to Licorice that something was happening. She turned around to see a large fireball headed directly towards her. Was this another robbery??? She didn’t have her bow or arrows, so she couldn’t do much. Before she could react Beatrice did.
Beatrice moved in front of the fireball and used magic of her own to contain it. It seemed almost effortless for the Mystery Fairy as she redirected the fire ball back at the stranger. Beatrice’s steps became almost aggressive, each one ringing like a bell, to notify the other fairies.
Licorice moved in front of Tartan, knowing he was unable to move from their planted spot. In a way, she almost hoped this woman was the same that destroyed her herbarium. In another, she was scared. She didn’t want to lose everything again and would do her best to prevent that.
Not too far away, Nyxie heard Beatrice’s all call and flew over to the scene as quickly as she could, preparing a water spell to douse whatever threat Beatrice was worried about.
The scene played out much differently than Odette had thought. The creature was more powerful than she, and even called in backup. And was that girl...protecting the weird plant? No, it had to be her imagination. The girl must have just been trying to see what was going on. After all, she did look pretty afraid. But why were all of her fearful glances aimed at Odette...?
Focusing her attention back on the fight, she snuffed out the fireball that she had fired at the creature, ensuring that none of the plants would be harmed while keeping an eye on the new opponent. It looked like a fairy?
Nothing made sense anymore. She shook her head to clear it and pressed her hands together, causing flames to coat her palms. It was tricky using fire magic around plants like this, so she decided that it would be best to keep them fairly contained.
Her palms burned brightly as she ran toward Licorice to get between her and the creatures. “I’ll buy you some time! Get out of here while you can, and find some help!” she yelled as she ran. It would be much easier to defend the woman if she was out of the line of fire.
Violet heard a knock at the door, and she immediately looked up in surprise. She had been watering her plants, all of them gathered by the window of the living room. She slowly lowered her watering can, unsure of who it could be. She wasn’t expecting anyone, not that she ever really had company over. She took a few timid steps towards the door, wondering who it could be. That is, until she heard a familiar voice chime in from the other side.
Odette…?
Violet walked to the door and opened it up, looking in surprise at one of her older sisters.
“O-Odette?” Violet called out, looking over Odette with a mixture of surprise and concern, “I-I wasn’t expecting you! H-How are you?” She looked at the bag with some concern. Did something happen?
Odette waved as her sister opened the door. “Hey, Violet! I’m good~ Sorry to drop in on you so suddenly.”
She scratched the back of her neck, suddenly a little shy. She felt like a little kid. “I understand if you’re busy! I just wanted to come by and see if you wanted to have a sleepover tonight!” The purple-haired girl tapped her bag. “No need to worry, I’m not out on the street or anything,” she joked, giving a wry smile.
“I brought some snacks, pillows, blankets, and a few other things. I thought we could make a cozy spot and just unwind a little! That is - if you have time!” She smiled hopefully at her sister as she spoke, wanting to get over a tough week with one of the most calming people she knew. Unsurprisingly, she also wanted to check on the younger girl. It had been ages since they last spoke, and she wanted to make sure that Violet was making it okay.
“Hey hey hey Licorice!” Tartan exclaimed happily. Licorice had moved Tartan to a section of the gardens between the exotic plants and edible plants section, wanting for him to have his own display to talk to guests properly about various things that a talking plant knew, but humans could never understand. She had taken the time to make sure she planted positive plants around him too, if one bothered him she’d relocate it, but normally everything was fine.
“Are you giving me some of those sweet fertilizers today? You’re so kind!” Tartan called excitedly. Licorice knew him to be a very excited plant, and smiled at his…. pseudo smile? Whenever Tartan smiled he would open both his mouths, to some it almost looked creepy. But to others, well they could tell the plant was doing their absolute best with no facial muscles.
“More than my pleasure. Beatrice will be bringing the new formula as well. I hope you’re okay with this new mixture.” Licorice politely offered. Tartan “smiled” again and waved around in a happy motion, almost like a dog’s tail. Licorice thought it was cute to say in the least.
Beatrice, a larger than human sized Mystery Fairy with four arms and a relatively stoic face, began to approach Licorice from behind. Her left two arms raising to tap Licorice’s shoulders, though from an outsiders perspective it was definitely possible it’d look like the fairy would be pushing her into a carnivorous man eating plant.
Odette had come to the gardens, hoping to get some advice on growing plants of her own. She was thinking about starting with herbs and flowers, but she wasn’t even sure where to begin. She really could only use pots at the moment, due to limited space... Maybe one of the local farmers would lend her some land to tend. Just a small patch where she could grow her own produce.
From what she heard around the island, a woman named Licorice seemed to be the best mentor. Hopefully, she could get a few tips without having to spend any gold, but she was willing to pay for the woman’s services. Odette recognized the value of knowledge gained through years of experience.
She wasn’t quite sure how this place worked. There was a welcome center and then she was just kind of left wandering through the lush greenery that seemed to get stranger the farther she went. It seemed like forever before she found another person among the plants.
Smiling, she was about to approach the person to ask for help when she saw a strange being with too many arms approach the person from behind. It seemed to be trying to touch her... It was then that Odette noticed the strange plant with two mouths that looked like it was getting ready to attack.
“Hey! Watch out!!” she called. Before the person could respond, Odette held her hand in front of her, feeling the familiar heat gather near her palm. A bright ball of fire appeared in front of her hand. “Get away from her!” she cried as she sent the fireball flying forward, toward the strange being.
It had been a difficult few days for Odette. She had gotten orders wrong - something she never did. She was struggling to make ends meet with the rent. She had been late to several of her shifts. All of it was starting to wear on her confidence. In fact, she was so absorbed in beating herself up about all her mishaps that week that she didn’t notice the faint smell of smoke until it was too late.
Odette sniffed the air and froze. Something was burning. She dropped the knife and grabbed a rag to pull the dish out of the oven, nearly burning herself in the process, only to realize that it was burnt beyond the point of saving. She had just wasted a perfectly good dish.
Letting the pan clatter onto the counter, frustrated tears started welling up in the corners of her eyes. Cooking was something she was good at, so why was she having such a hard time with it?
The sound of a bell tinkling caught her attention. She wiped her eyes furiously and headed toward the front, hoping the customer wouldn’t notice her strange mood.
“Hi there! H-how can I help you?” Her voice cracked. Shit.
Odette’s eyes gleamed in excitement as she sneaked up to her sister’s door. There was a bag full of overnight necessities slung haphazardly over her shoulder in preparation for the surprise she was about to spring on Violet. It had been ages since the two girls caught up, and she was dying to know how her favorite little sister was faring. In truth, what with their busy work schedules, Odette should have let Violet know that she was coming over... But where was the fun in that?
They were sisters, so Odette didn’t see a problem with an unannounced visit! Though, the sleeping over part might have been a bit much. That being said, Odette was rather lonely as of late. Even though she interacted with a ton of people every day, it was all fairly surface level. She needed some sister time more than she wanted to admit. Though they were all adults, Odette still felt weird living alone. It didn’t feel right after growing up with two sisters.
Hoping that Violet wouldn’t be terribly upset with her, Odette knocked on Violet’s door and said, “Guess who?” Then she waited, a huge grin plastered on her face as the ideas of fun things they could do together.
