i think the best poetry makes the familiar strange again. i like how you can memorise poems and keep them in your pocket and invoke them against your troubles. many times i have got through unpleasant situations by rolling a poem around my head like a marble ad nauseam. i did a lot of scouting as a very lazy child who lagged at the very end of a group on a hike and there'd be blood in my socks and rain in my collar and the only way in which i would be able to power through would be by mentally reciting the poetry of krzysztof kamil baczyński, who i think is very good at enstrangement/defamiliarisation - below is a very amateurish translation (for which i was commended in a uk poetry translation competition hehe...)
i think writing poetry is good exercise for any writer, no matter their form. the way to freedom is through constraint.

“They are bearers of universal mysteries. Holders of ancient wisdom. They are birdwatchers…
They are dealers in wonder and awe, masters of birds and ecosystems, and, despite the many stereotypes we can muster, one should never underestimate the power, joy and influence of the birdwatcher. Indeed, they may just be humanity’s greatest source of inspiration and hope.”
Yes! To be aware of what is really around us and not what we’re told is around us, it’s transcendent, even subversive.

A comforting thought for anyone feeling stuck right now: fields have to lie fallow for a season so the soil can rest and recover its nutrients. trees look entirely dead in the winter, but underneath the bark, they are preparing for spring. you are allowed to have fallow seasons. you are allowed to be in a winter state. your productivity does not define your worth as a human being, nor does it define your talent as an artist or a creator. if the words aren't flowing, or the art isn't coming together, or you just feel tired—let yourself rest without the crushing weight of guilt. you aren't failing; you are gathering the nutrients you need for the next beautiful thing you make. 🤍
A flock of mostly grackles I think, although there could be other blackbirds in it, in mid-July a few years ago. They flew so close I could hear their wings and almost feel the air. It gave me goosebumps. I had never seen anything but starlings fly in a group like this.
