✧ reading: nothing at the moment, which is incredibly frustrating. I've been in a bit of a reading slump recently. The more I work on my own projects, the less time I invest in reading. I want to reduce my sub pile, but I can't seem to find the time to do it. I've been more into films recently.

✧ last movie: Joyland by Saim Sadiq (shattered my heart into a million pieces, I recommend)

✧ last series: I watch Taskmaster every week at this point (currently rewatching S06). Recently finished "Waiting for the Out" and now want to read the memoir it was based on.

✧ last song: my mind is a mountain by Deftones

✧ sweet or salty: Unfortunately, I have quite the sweet tooth.

✧ coffee or tea: Also unfortunately, I love coffee

✧ working on: sent one of three ideas for writing projects to my agent, really want to send her the second one by next week and I also need to draw some stickers. It's all fun, but the schedule is tight!

🦐 sweet or salty: salty! it's really easy for me to get sick of sweet foods but I do love a treat now and then

🦐 coffee or tea: I'm definitely a tea guy, the one time I had a cup of coffee I freaked the fuck out and felt like I was dying - I'll drink decaf on occasion

🦐 working on: procrastinating my homework with the excuse that I got my wisdom teeth out on friday and it was incredibly traumatic 😁

✨last movie: hmm well idk if it counts as a movie but yesterday i rewatched bo burnham’s inside, and before that i watched kill bill vol 2 which was really good

✨last series: i started rewatching atla since it (sort of) won the poll earlier. i also just started watching the summer that hikaru died which is freaky and i like it a lot so far. and im still rewatching s1 of the pitt with my brother who hadn’t seen it before!

✨last song: nightcall by kavinsky. i saw a clip of billie eilish saying it’s her favorite song and im not a huge of her or anything, but i was still curious to check it out. i wouldn’t say im crazy about it or anything, but its a pretty good song

✨sweet or salty: i GUESS sweet if you absolutely must force me to choose, but honestly i flip flop constantly depending on which i ate more recently lol

✨coffee or tea: hmmm another hard one. overall i like coffee flavor better but im much more picky with it. like it has to be cold and extremely sweet (to block out any bitterness from the coffee. i’m extremely sensitive to bitter flavors and can’t eat/drink anything with even a hint of bitterness.) tea i like less in general, but im less picky about it. it still can’t be bitter, but it can be warm.

✨working on: well right now i’m just recovering from my surgery, but when im feeling more up to it, im helping my best friend with stuff for his new video game company.

The sun isn't up yet. That's good. It means that anyone who is awake is either too drunk or too tired to notice you sneaking down the hall. You shouldn't have put yourself in this situation. Even so, you don't want to leave.

You're nose to nose with Hobie. His arm stretches across you. It's not comfortable in here. The air is humid and Hobie's body is always unnaturally warm. You're sticky and dizzy in the heat. Despite knowing how lucky you are to have woken up when you can sneak away unseen, you'd like to stay here forever. You take a deep breath, hindered by the weight of Hobie's arm.

It's disappointing to look away from his sleeping face, but you're hoping to spot your clothes before you make any moves to leave. If you're quick and quiet, you might be able to avoid waking him.

He grumbles the first time you shift. His arm curls around you, fingers brushing the small of your back. You could fall back asleep. You could pretend you never woke up in the first place. Let him wake you in a panic and take a share of the thrilling nervousness that comes with plotting your escape.

Moving again will stir him awake, you're sure of it. You press a kiss to his lips, hoping to soothe him back to sleep. His lips are parted when you pull away. You move as slow as you can, easing your leg from between his. With each inch you move the bridge of his nose scrunches upward. "I know," you whisper, "but I've gotta go". His fingers stretch outward until his palm is flat against your skin, pressing on your back to keep you close. Why did you ever think he'd make this easy for you?

"Hobie," you sigh.

"Nuh uh."

"If I don't go now--"

"Go back to sleep." His voice is rough and low, still dripping with sleep and sore from last night's show. You can feel your stomach twist and your pupils dilate. Thank fuck his eyes are still closed.

You kiss him again. "I was never supposed to fall asleep in the first place."

Your heart melts when his face relaxes. He inhales and exhales with a soft hum. "Oops." It's the last thing he says before he drifts back to sleep, breaths coming out in soft puffs that threaten to turn into snores.

The next time you open your eyes, sunlight beams through the window and bounces off of Hobie's smile. It's an amazing sight to wake up to. His face is as soft as it was when he was asleep. All of its satisfaction pointed at you. You can't find your voice when you try to say good morning.

"Take a minute to wake up, love."

It's irritating to be stuck doing as you're told, but sleep is still clinging to your mind and voice. You roll onto your back and stretch your arm off the edge of the bed. The window is your best chance of getting out of here this late in the morning. Climbing out of it barefoot won't be fun.

"What's wrong?" Hobie wiggles his arm out from under you and grabs your hand instead.

"I think I'm going to have to climb out the window."

He laughs and squeezes your hand, "Why the fuck would you climb out the window? You know you live here, right?"

"It's like, 11AM. People will see if I just leave."

He doesn't respond quick enough for your comfort. You turn your head away from the window and watch him sit up. He's still smiling, but there's something missing. His eyes aren't quite right. There's tension in his jaw that you can trace all the way down to his shoulders. His index finger taps at the back of your hand, quick and constant without a discernible pattern. What did you do wrong?

"Want me to go cause a distraction instead?"

The knot in your stomach starts to come undone. The corner of your mouth quirks up in a smile and you meet his eyes again. "You don't have to do that."

"'d rather do that than have your blood on my hands when you fall off the side of the fuckin' house."

You roll your shoulders back and reach toward the floor to scoop up your shirt. "I wouldn't die."

"You definitely won't die if you just walk out the door like a normal fuckin' person."

"But I'd totally blow our cover."

He tosses you your pants before you have your shirt all the way on. You thank him with a nod as you tug them up your legs.

"Why do you still care so much?" he asks.

The tapping hasn't stopped, even as you brush circles on the back of his hand. Your skin has stopped registering the gaps in which his finger is lifted from it.

Why do you still care so much? Everyone knows. You've known that for ages. Items of yours scattered across Hobie's room catch your eye as you avoid looking at him. Last night you all but dragged him off stage as soon as the set was over because you couldn't wait until you got home to kiss him. It's not the secret you want it to be, no matter how much you try and convince yourself.

"I don't know."

"'m I not good enough for you?" his voice quirks upward, but you know it's not a joke.

Your heart stops. You find comfort in the speed with which you answer. "Don't say that" flies out of your mouth before you can think about how to respond. Clearly it helps him too, as his index finger rests back on your hand and stays there.

"Okay." he says, "I don't... want to push, love. Doesn't feel good to make you so self conscious, though, y'know?"

"You don't."

"Sure seems like I do. With you thinking of climbing out the window so that no one knows you were in here, and all that."

He's starting to relax. One after the other, each word feels lighter. His shoulders are set back, his jaw unclenched, smile less forced. You, on the other hand, feel like shit. Like the tiniest, most pitiful creature on the planet. Because he's right, why do you care? Why do you keep doing this? But also, when did he loosen up on all this? How were you supposed to know? You both agreed to keep this casual and discreet, so what the fuck happened?

You exhale louder than you mean to. "I just never know what the deal is anymore, I guess."

He has both of your hands now. You're turned toward him, looking at him. It's reassuring to have your hands in his. Like a quiet reminder that you're here to figure things out, not just to argue. It's also sickeningly intimate. Every muscle in your body feels at the ready to turn away and make it clear that you don't need this. It's extra. Nice if it works, but you'll be fine when he gets bored.

"It made sense when it was just sex," you continue, "but then there was the hand holding, and the cuddling, and the kissing. And I know that I was-- that I am okay with all of that but I don't-- the rules don't make sense anymore."

Someone should probably track down a ladder and try and fix whatever is making the air conditioning sound like it's being held together by tape and a dream. In the meantime, you wish Hobie would respond so that you weren't thinking about the sound of the air conditioner or how you shouldn't have said any of the things that just left your mouth. Your hands are relaxed in his, but that's where your comfort ends. From the wrists up you're fighting yourself to stay here instead of making a run for it. It's fine though. You're safe. You need to relax. He can't read your mind and you know it, but you have to remind yourself when his fingers uncurl and stretch up your wrists. You watch his eyes make the journey from your hands back to your face and wonder how long he's been noticing so much about you.

"I just want you to be able to trust me." He means it.

"I don't know why I can't." You mean it too.
