El runs and she keeps running until she’s about as far away from home as she figures she can get. And as the years go by, she manages to carve out a peaceful sort of existence. It’s not a happy life, but she’s content with the knowledge that the loved ones she left behind are safe and happy.
But while Mike’s safe, he’s not happy, not by a long shot. He’s living a half-life, living under the shadow of the love he lost… of the love he knows is still out there, somewhere, waiting for him to find her.
And when Mike finally has enough of surviving without living and embarks on an aimless journey to find her, El knows her days of isolation are behind her. Because the longer Mike tries to search for her, the more attention he brings to himself and the more likely he’ll put himself in danger. So she leaves a trail of breadcrumbs to guide him to her, as always willing to do anything to keep him safe.
And when they reunite in the sleepy village El has learned to call home, they’ll learn if they can move past the shadow of the history they share… and if they can rediscover the love that once shone brighter than the sun.
Chapter 15 Preview:
It’s like they’re existing in a bubble, a peaceful, contented space where nothing bad can touch them, where it’s just the two of them and the history they share. Mike never wants to leave; if he could exist in this space with El for the rest of his life, he would die a happy man.
And then El gives him a soft, sleepy smile, disarming in how open it is. “Hi,” she says, voice barely above a whisper.
Mike gulps and lets out a shaky sigh. “Hi,” he returns, just as quiet. His heart is beginning to speed up in his chest, each beat thumping harder and harder against his ribcage. But Mike can’t even begin to figure out how to control it, so he doesn’t try.
Neither of them look away, staring at each other across the scant inches that separate them, the space between them heavy and thrumming with an energy so thick, it’s palpable. And then, after a moment that feels like it drags on forever, they move. Mike’s not sure if he moves first, or if she does, or if they both do in tandem, but the space between them disappears, sheets rustling around them as their mouths meet in a whispering kiss, gossamer soft.
The kiss lasts an eternity, it feels like, and every inch of Mike sparks to life at the feel of her lips on his, lush and full, warm and welcoming, a dream made real. His hand comes up to gently cup her cheek, instinctually seeking her closeness, stomach swooping at the feel of her skin against his hand, soft as silk, and the sharp breath she sucks in against him has him pulling back just far enough to look at her.
There’s a rich tapestry of emotion woven in El’s gaze - curiosity, confusion, hope - but above all, what gets him is this: the dark edge of desire, of want. Her eyes are hooded as she stares back at him, gaze roaming over his face, like what she’s looking for in him is the same thing that he’s looking for in her.
Confirmation.

"El never got to graduate." I can make it worst. El never got to complete a full year at school

Chapter 14 Preview:
Seyðisfjörður is a quaint town and, under most circumstances, Mike would find it charming.
Hell, part of him does find it charming, a feat made possible by the gentle excitement of the woman next to him, walking hand-in-hand as they make a loop of the small center of town. The thrill of walking with El’s hand firmly in his threatens to make his heart explode in his chest. It’s like he’s living in a dream, one he never wants to wake up from… one that he has woken up from too many times to count. He doesn’t trust it, the reality of it - how could he when he’s spent more time dreaming of this than actually having it?
Mike tries to ground himself in the feel of El’s hand in his, warm and solid, her skin soft beneath the pad of his thumb. And he finds that he can’t stop himself from staring over at her as they walk, staring at her instead of whatever El is showing him. She’s just so beautiful, eyes sparkling in her excitement to show him this place that’s become her home, proud that she has something to show him instead of the other way around.
When Mike looks at her, he feels time compress, the entirety of their history washing over him in a single moment. Side-by-side, her hand in his, suddenly he’s 12 and the leaves crunch underfoot as they walk along the railroad tracks, shoulders bumping from their proximity; he’s 14 and holding her hand as they walk through the fields outside Hawkins; he’s 15, 16 and his palm is sweaty against hers as they make their way through the underground tunnels as they sneak out to find time to be alone.
But at the same time, he keenly feels the stretch of years that have separated them, 6 fucking years lingering between them like a gaping maw. The woman by his side - and make no mistake, El is a woman now, in ways that Mike can’t stop noticing - is both familiar and a stranger and Mike’s heart aches that there’s any part of El that he doesn’t know, that she’s grown and changed and blossomed into this beautiful, magnetic woman while he was stuck somewhere else, waiting for his life to restart.
It’s why he has a hard time looking at Seyðisfjörður and seeing through to the charm of it. Because this is the place that’s gotten to witness this marvelous transformation and he can’t help but resent it for having that when he couldn’t.

Summary: Mike begins his search for El and El has to figure out if she’s brave enough to guide him to her.
Preview:
The memories of those times hits him straight in the heart, the organ giving a painful squeeze. Even with her in hiding, even with having to sneak around to be with each other and be constantly vigilant, he didn’t know how good he had it then, when he could spend countless hours and minutes in her presence, where he could hold her and kiss her and love her in all the ways that made his body and soul sing. And Mike wonders, would he have done anything differently if he’d known he was going to lose her before he even got the chance to graduate high school?
The question lingers in the back of his mind, haunting him as he begins curving his way west, Virginia, Georgia, and Kentucky all dead ends. He tries to put El out of his mind as he takes a few days and hunkers down in St. Louis, intent on getting some writing done. But like the ghost of her presence, thoughts of El aren’t so easy to ignore.
The weight of what he’s doing finally hits him during the very long drive up to Sioux Falls in South Dakota, the weather getting colder and icier the further north he goes. Mike knows he’ll go to the ends of the earth to find her, that there’s nothing he wouldn’t do if it meant getting to be with her again.
But just how far will he have to go?
And what’ll he do if he runs out of places to look?

From having a feeling that El was there while she's in the void to see him, to actually seeing her in the void. STRANGER THINGS (2016 - 2025) 2x02 - Trick or Treat, Freak 5x08 - The Rightside Up
been thinking about how brilliant el is. she knew how to play chess at eight years old. she was able to find a way out of the lab after the gate opened despite how scared she was of all the chaos around her. she was the one who figured out the situation with heather in billy in season 3. she discovered the truth about her mother and figured out her home address and how to visit her in person with the limited world knowledge she had in season 2. she is SO smart and it’s overlooked constantly both in the show and by the fandom at large and that’s such a disservice to her as a character
