sometimes i'm like, why does SYFY's the magicians, a bad show with bad writing, continue to have such a hold on my psyche? and the answer really is: it's because quentin coldwater is sooooo fucked up

Season One Eliot, because it’s been a bad couple of weeks and why not?
He was the one who told me I could be anything. And I believed him. But he didn’t tell you that the world makes you choose. You can be one of the smart ones. Or one of the pretty ones. Or even a strong one. But…try to be all three, better learn to smile and shut up, ‘cause the second you’re you, the second out loud, pissed off, it’s, “What a bitch,” “What a slut,” “Who the fuck does she think she is?” So you never give them the chance. You hit first. And anyone dumb enough to hit back soon finds that there’s no hurting you, sheathed in all that hard, glossy armor. Then why does it hurt so much?
They trailed Eliot out to the backyard. Seeing him happy and excited and reasonably sober restored Quentin’s faith in the possibility that they were on the right track, that everything broken was fixable. The Magicians (The Magicians, #1) by Lev Grossman The Magicians | S01E02: The Source of Magic (2016)
He runs his finger over the words again, brands them into his memory; how the letter ‘Q’ curls in that unique way he writes it, how every word is written carefully, like he had hesitated to write them, as if he had agonised over every detail. As if he had poured out what he hadn’t said into every curve, every dot, and every cross of the Ts—Quentin could feel them. Maybe it was part wishful thinking, but there is one thing he knows without a doubt. Eliot, with his wild curls and eyes like the rising sun, loves him. Dear Q The Magicians | S02E04: The Flying Forest (2017)
“There’s something fascinating about the fact that this character couldn’t really have existed on TV 10 years ago. He’s kind of a bad boy, heartthrob, debaucherous, naughty, sophisticated, aesthetic dandy. And he’s certainly gay and attracted to men, but what’s interesting about Eliot isn’t that he’s gay. It’s that he’s Eliot. He has so many of these other qualities that break the mold of what we’re used to seeing on TV. The incorporate ideas about the witty queen or the dandy, but the fact that he’s powerful and he’s a budding ruler and the fact that he is in touch with his femininity — but also there are times when he can be very masculine. There are times when he’s incredibly powerful and incredibly vulnerable. He really covers a lot of ground. […]
“It would be great to see him have more fully realized relationships with men in both sexual and nonsexual contexts. While I don’t think Eliot is a stranger to fluidity or new experiences, I do hope he gets to have a real relationship with a man soon. I think it’s important to explore Eliot’s sexuality unapologetically, now more than ever. […]
I hope that we get to explore specific experiences that are relevant to Eliot as a queer character not only in fantasy but also in real life, and I hope that we got there on the show … you don’t see queer characters in the fantasy genre ever, especially on fantasy genre television shows.
