I want a dating app for depressed, overworked early career researchers. Not for actual dating, but to find some solace amongst comrades, where you can share resources like syllabi and stuff. Or like where successful ECRs will give you a hug and tell you things will be okay, you will actually find someone that will tolerate your unhinged lifestyle and mood swings, loneliness is temporary (unless you want a permanent job and thus will need to move another 8 times in 4 years), alcoholism is not a hip thing professors do (but cocaine sometimes helps), writing poetry is not as cool as you think (people won’t call you a poet but an obnoxious twat), life has meaning and value (but you will only find out in 60 years time).
I can’t think of a funny name for it though—slogan could be: Tired of Hinge? How about Unhinged young scholars just dying to proofread your monograph! Idk 😂
(Nah, I hate dating apps—digital interaction sucks)
Will miss the place. Yes, that is a proper medieval castle just 5 minutes from my front door!

thoughts — 23.06.2022
A colleague recently told me that they thought I always come across as very together and well-composed. Very nice thing of them to say, but the opposite is true. I don’t even have a form of togetherness, not even a mess (which has a structure); I’m just a pool of emotions that when they cross each other can barely function. Switched up going to therapy once a week now, and it’s the only thing keeping me going right now. My therapist is the most amazing woman and I have the utmost respect for her.
I’m low-key angry all the time, at everything. The world is just gradually getting worse and worse and no one seems to care. I worry about the people I care about all the time now, especially those in the US. Abortion bans, skyrocketing cost of living, no healthcare or mental health services, no proper social security, no unions, extreme political polarisation, shootings are on the up again. So admire how they can keep their lives going. I want them to be okay but there is nothing I can do.
I hate how everyone’s just falling in line with social expectations and the way capitalism has decided what to live a proper life is like. None of my friends, which are already very scarce, have time to do anything anymore. Everyone is settling, getting a house, a garden, a dog, promotions at work. Discussions pension plans. And I don’t care for any of it. Couldn’t give a fuck. Don’t want a house or kids or a dead-end job where I’ll be slaving away, hating every day until I’m 67, retire and die.
I wish someone would just shoot me a message once in a while, asking how I’m doing. To have like an honest and proper conversation with someone who is genuinely interested. I feel like I am always the one reaching out to others, because I’m really lonely. I used to be good with that, before the pandemic, and now I’m just so tired of being alone all the time, to have to do everything by myself, always. It’s fine, it won’t stop me from doing things I like, but it’s still lonely. I would just like to talk to some people on a sort of daily basis, about anything really, to feel like I’m not invisible all the time.
I wish people weren’t so afraid of feelings. Social media has destroyed people’s ability to be sincere. It makes me want to give up on being nice. So much easier being dismissive and superficially pleasant with people than actually making an effort to be kind. It’s so tiresome. And to what end? I’m always getting some kind of trouble because of it, either it being perceived as romantic, too intense, weird, or whatever. It’s none of those things. I just want to care and make others happy. It’s not some devious trick. Sometimes things are really just what they are.
I still miss Amber every fucking day and I don’t see how that will ever go away.
I don’t even want a romantic relationship anymore at this point. Or rather, I want one but I’ll settle for just having a very good friend, someone to hang out with, travel with, spend time with, go to the movies, cook some food with, hug once in a while, sit on a beach or in a field to watch the sunset and the stars. That’s all. A companion. So simple but even that seems totally impossible.
I’m so tired all the time and I have so much work still to finish before moving to Ontario. So much social anxiety because things never work out well and I don’t know what to say or do in a digital age to not be misunderstood. Language is too fluid when it is only written down.
