NEW in distro: SWELL - "Bastards & Rarities 1989-1994" CD One of the most underrated bands of the 90s, San Francisco's SWELL took Velvet Underground-inspired hush and filtered it through the Jesus and Mary Chain’s stoned buzz. Even though the name implies that this is throwaway material, that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, this collection of 10 wonderful lo-fi tunes is great pop music done on a shoestring budget and originally released on indie labels (Sub Pop, Beggars Banquet). This exquisitely engineered multi-channel recording presents a single uninterrupted improvised double bass performance recorded live within the unique & uncommonly resonant acoustic environs of one of the many disused former munition storage "bunkers" located throughout the grounds of Enterprise South Nature Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The resonance of the bunker is remarkable, as can readily be heard in the first few minutes of the recording: miscellaneous, difficult-to-attribute sounds multiply and fall back on themselves, firmly establishing the bunker’s interior as an active participant in the performance that follows. And what follows is a stunning, virtuoso extraction of sounds from the entire, expansive range of the double bass, which Lipson plays with a variety of conventional and extended techniques.

BAL is a one man band from Hungary making hostile and misanthropic mid-tempo DSBM. ISSFLL plays a solemn, melodic mix of raw atmospheric BM, blackgaze and post-BM. Much of the music's texture is incredibly harsh, even corrosive, made all the more so when the tremolo BM guitars are contrasted against a second, clean-toned guitar or bass on a number of tracks. As the BM guitars are burning-acid in tone, so the vocals are raspy to the point of ghastly ghost creepiness.
