European Roller

The bright blue European Roller (Coracias garrulus) breeds in southern and eastern Europe through to Siberia and winters in Africa.

These specimens from Carnegie Museum of Natural History are preserved as both study skins and a taxidermy mount. The Section of Birds is home to several drawers of eight species of rollers in the genus Coracias, which are part of the museum’s large holding of birds from Africa and Europe and were collected between 1891 and 1982.

The simply overwhelming colours of the Green-headed Tanager (Tangara seledon) are sure to brighten anyone’s day if they are able to see this active little bird in the wild. Thankfully, this isn’t too difficult, as this species is widely distributed across the forests of south-eastern Brazil, and its range even extends into north-eastern Argentina and south-eastern Paraguay. It’s ubiquity certainly does not detract from its splendour!

“The Laysan Albatross is the most numerous of the three North Pacific albatrosses, and the second most numerous Hawaiian seabird. The Laysan Albatross breeds in large numbers across all of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, as well as small populations on Kaua'i and O'ahu. Its population was estimated at 2.5 million individuals in 1990, with the largest breeding colony being on Midway Island, consisting of 400,000 breeding pairs.”
