i knew posting this in 2022 was risky but holy fucking shit

probably one of the most heartwrenching headcanons I have would be Kaeya and the Angel's Share. the way he still lingers around the corners, knows every bit of the wood, holding the tavern, every note of scents and every item in the wine catalogue.

and knows that he once felt so safe within these walls. so calm, so grounded, so peaceful. it's as if nothing could get through them.

four years of Diluc's absence shattered that peace completely, leaving him defenceless, vulnerable, open to the very world, scarred and burned. he doesn't feel safe anywhere. he feels dread at the every step of his, at every breath he takes. his mind is in shambles.

so, he carries himself to the tavern. so, he drinks. so, he notices others spilling their secrets and babbling about everything when the tip of the scales tolls to the side. so, he decides to take the risks and put aside his own safety for the sake of Mondstadt.

after all, he knows what drunk people can do.

every time he enters the tavern, his mind screeches at him, begging to leave. every time he smiles and adds one more glass of the patron to his tab, he's pushing it, terrified of what can follow next. the secrets he's seeking or the punches he's avoiding. there's also a chance of poison in his drink, he has to be alert all the time. there's also a chance of spiking his drink. he's a handsome bachelor, after all. he's terrified.

he ruins his mind by paranoia he can't keep at bay.

then, Diluc returns. then, Diluc takes the bartender position in the tavern. then, Diluc seems to catch his consealed nervousness and bubbling horror.

then, Diluc tips his drink to the side, apologises, takes the glass with himself, and Kaeya sees the patron grit his teeth, seething. oh. then, Diluc breaks the fight before it's about to start, dragging the adventurer out, and Kaeya, pinned to the wall by the very adventurer, slips to the floor and sits, the tavern suspiciously empty of other people. then, Diluc throws him a look and gets him a mug, full of Glühwein, and Kaeya, half-delirious from the fever and shivering from the cold, sips at the spiced wine long after the shift is over.

then, Diluc sits on the other side and shares a wine with him. it's the day of Crepus' death. Kaeya hides his face in his hands, dry sobs stacked into his lungs, the long forgotten feeling of safety washes over him, and he can try and believe it's not as lost as he has imagined.

the wine he drinks seems slightly salty.

he ignores the tears in the red eyes.

it's quiet.

Cheaya but the only reason they had the opportunity to meet up so often is because Lumine thought it'd be really funny.

She paired them up once to help her and not only do they work extraordinarily (and shockingly) well together, it was also the most entertaining party she had gathered yet. And it's with two of her favourite(ish) people. (She tolerates them. Got close because they're also unconventional)

She has never seen Childe this enthusiastic about something outside of battle and she has never seen Kaeya this openly annoyed at... Anyone, to be honest.

Lumine saw Kaeya freeze Childe's drink and immediately decided that this is her go-to duo for whenever she possibly could

One of my favorite tricks for designing alien species/cultures is to take a real animal with an interesting lifecycle and think about what that biology would translate to if they had human intelligence

Example: silk moths as a base species

Because the moths themselves don’t eat and only live long enough to mate and then starve to death, the entire culture is made up of children and adolescents. The older children raise the younger ones, with families being made up of hatchmates from different years.

Because molts and eventual transformation into a short lived adult happen on a set schedule, families have a cycle— when your oldest set of siblings cocoon to become adults, you wait at the mating grounds and try to adopt their newborns after they pass. If that fails, you take any ‘orphans’ you can find.

Because death and birth are nearly simultaneous, they have a religion based around reincarnation, and infants with markings similar to a parent are often given their name. Claiming the offspring of a beloved family member is vitally important, because you want to be able to protect their soul and keep them close.

Because it’s hard to track the offspring of your male family members, there are sometimes major fights when a family sees an infant with familiar markings in another family’s clutch.

Between mating seasons, their culture is extremely food-oriented, because everyone is growing and silkworms eat nigh constantly. They spend most of their lives outdoors but sleep and shelter from bad weather in large family dwellings made from wood and the remains of the silk cocoons of prior generations.

Yes, this kind of thing is fascinating! The entire culture would be wildly different from anything human. They wouldn't even think of themselves as adults after transformation -- that would be a whole other stage of life that we don't have an exact analogy for. For us, "adult" means a fully capable member of society, with the option to start a new family. For them, they're capable as soon as they can handle the relevant tools. There would be other rites of passage. The later stage when they change, stop eating, and focus only on Making More Babies -- that's not an adult. That's one step closer to the gods.

Fun fact: years ago I wanted to make up an alien species that only lived for a single day, and I just couldn't figure out a way to justify full intelligence with that short a lifespan -- until I decided to base them on mayflies. Only the "adults" live for a day. With all the societal differences that that implies.

(They're the aliens who show up partway through Spectacular Silver Earthling. Shh, minor spoiler. I love these guys. Especially Mudtail.)

Oh yeah, so weird! There was a good breakdown from Dr Ferox about what humans would be like as marsupials, and it really stuck in my head.

I swear someone else drew it too, but I can't find it for the life of me. It's an interesting concept because the standards of beauty would end up so wildly different. Compare the standard Hollywood model with a marsupial woman with no breasts but yes tummy pouch. A pouch that she may or may not keep her car keys in.

cute couple things i’ve seen on campus this semester that make me want a stupid boyfriend

girl and guy were sitting on the same chair with the guy behind her only he was hugging her waist and fast asleep on her shoulder while she was working on her computer

saw this couple across the street from me waiting for the bus. the guy did the thing where he pretends to look for something in his bag and pulls out a finger heart instead

in the hallway i watched this girl run up to her bf and he gives her the biggest hug and goes “see told you you’d kill your presentation” then kisses her forehead

girl sitting next to me in the library has been grinding on an assignment all day (like i’d have been in the library from 10-3 with breaks in between for classes but she’d been sitting there the whole time) and her boyfriend would come in every few hours, put down food or coffee on her table, kiss the top of her head, and walk away without a word

in one of my smaller classes (probably around 30 people) this guy’s phone rang and he sprung up and left the class to answer it. usually profs don’t care if you leave class but this one is really small and he knows all of our names/faces, so when the guy comes back in the prof asks if everything was ok. he has the biggest grin on his face and says “yeah, sorry that was my girlfriend. her flight took off right before it started snowing so i was worried. she’s okay tho.”

was sitting outside and reading when it was warmer and i could see this couple sitting under a tree a little ways away from me. the girl was laying in his lap while he was on his phone. suddenly i heard an alarm go off so i look up and they start switching places so now he’s laying his head on her lap and she’s reading sitting up. it happened twice more after that

Kaeya aggressively scrubbing Childe's hair in the bath and throwing him around because he's pissed the guy woke him up bloodied and muddied. Though not pissed enough to make him deal with it alone and injured.

Childe not even noticing that Kaeya's being rough because he has not been taken care of since he fell into the abyss.

Kaeya, inner thoughts while literally gripping at Childe's hair: 'This idiot I SWEAR, couldn't have even wiped himself down before entering. Now the wood is stained and muddied oh I'm so going to kill him. Came in injured too! What if it was worse?! I told him to start choosing his fights,'

Childe, who hasn't felt a hand in his hair in years: 'He loves me :3 he looooveeees me :3' *gets slightly waterboarded* 'The captain's so nice... And sweet and gorgeous...'

Childe: "I think I might have a mild concussion,"

Kaeya, eye twitching: "oh FUCK OFF."

(he's insanely worried first and foremost lmao)
