HOWL IS FINISHED!

This is probably one of the fastest sewing projects I've done in a long time. Once the fiddly parts of the diamond pattern were done, the rest of it came together in a downhill sprint. It helped that I took a step back from perfectionism and let myself machine-sew everything; for a competition piece I would normally handstitch all the trim and bindings.

Speaking of trim and bindings, I made a solid dent in my stash! I had precisely enough of the wide gold trim to fit the lower edge (less than two inches extra!) and comfortably enough of the loop-edge, gold-vine, and heart-lace trim. I have a foot to a yard left of each of those; still enough for a cuff or a collar accent in the future. The blue jacquard and red silk were just about used up, and I have plenty left of the pink. Down to the thread and interfacing, I didn't buy any materials for this cosplay at all!

I also have to shout out the pattern I followed by @marquisecubey for being so well-constructed and easy to follow! The yoke-back design also gives me ideas, it's a nice canvas for perhaps adding some applique or embroidery in the future.

I couldn't be happier with how it all came together, it sparkles in the sun. I'll get the chance to wear him this weekend and hopefully get good photos! Everyone add more texture to your costumes NOW

Beaded Rainbow Odenwald Shawl!

Lost my mind a little and added (if my math is correct) 5,615 beads to Nim Teasdale's Odenwald pattern. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!

The goal was “soothingly weighted but not uncomfortable to wear, even as someone with chronic pain.” It could have been a little heavier, so maybe I’ll make a shawl with larger beads another time, but I’m very pleased with this one. I used size 6/0 seed beads, applied as I go with a .6mm crochet hook.

Yarn-wise, used 2 cakes of YarnArt Flowers. I knitted the fully purple sections from both, then knitted all the way through the yellow-oranges with a single ball. When I hit the beginning of red-oranges, I used yarn from both cakes, alternating between them. (Not the entirety of both, I played it by ear to make sure I made it through the full rainbow.)

I do have edited charts with bead placements. I will only share them with Nim's permission.

I've done A LOT of knitting/crochet this year while chronic illness kept me from my sewing machine, but I'm feeling much better now. There will be new quilts to look forward to soon, plus a few more yarn crafts to share in the meantime!

Happy pride everyone! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

A pride flag was one of the quilting projects I really wanted to get done, and it works great as a scraps buster.

This is roughly 40 by 65 centimetres (about 16 by 26 inches) and quilted in the ditch with thin cotton batting. I wish I'd used rainbow thread for the quilting, but I didn't have any on hand, and the goal was to not buy any new materials.

HST = half square triangle; S = square.

The pieces are listed on the diagram above, but here they are again:

Light blue: 10 HST

Light pink: 6 HST

White: 2 HST

Brown: 12 HST

Black: 12 HST

Red: 1 HST, 7 S

Orange: 1 HST, 6 S

Yellow: 1 HST, 5 S

Green: 1 HST, 5 S

Blue: 1 HST, 6 S

Purple: 1 HST, 7 S

The HST are 9 cm (≈3.5 in) and the squares are 8 cm (≈3.14 in). I used a 5 mm (≈0.2 in) seam allowance. I recommend using a bigger seam allowance if you’re making a larger quilt, or one that will be used as a blanket or as part of a wearable piece.

I worked by washing, pressing, and cutting all my fabric into the necessary pieces. I then assembled all my HST into squares, then pressed the seams open, and squared the squares down to 8 cm (≈3.14 in). I assembled those squares into 1x1 pieces, pressed, squared. Those were assembled into 2x2 pieces, pressed, squared. Then into 2x6 bands, pressed, squared. Then into 4x6 bands, pressed, squared. I then assembled the three resulting bands (two 4x6, one 2x6) and pressed and squared one last time to finish the quilt top.

After all HST were assembled into squares. I recommend taking pictures of your fabric set up before sewing, so you remember which order you wanted to put your squares in.

I used the bi flag as a backing, but feel free to do a one-sided flag and use the backing of your choice. I know there’s cute pride-themed quilting cotton out there, or just a plain colour would work as well.

I don’t have a diagram for the bi flag: I used 8 cm (≈3.14 in) squares, 16 blue, 8 purple, and 16 pink. Those were assembled similarly, as I find working in full bands results in irregular points.

A similar process could be used to make any pride flag of your choice! I might make a trans pride one eventually. This is a really good stash-busting project, and a cuter alternative to a polyester flag. Please send me pics or tag me if you sew one!

Starry socks, finally complete!! I started these back in February, but got waylaid by top surgery and other projects - so happy they're done! I picked black and white because I'd just finished playing 'In Stars and Time' ⭐

Was aiming for 48” x 60”, came out 39” x 60” so far, but I’m hoping to be able to block it to a little wider and I’m ok losing a few inches of length for that

Omg i never posted them. yay okay so this is Lovelace the rat (they/them) and they’re my latest creation. I made the pattern myself and hand sewed them out of an old sweater i bought at the thrift store. They’re fully posable with jointed limbs and they’re about 20 inches tall. open the cut for the free pattern!!

Pictures of a recent project!! Trans quilt!!!

It’s a lap quilt, so not super big. I started and finished this in one night, working on it for 8 hours straight, and I’m really glad I did cause I’m so happy with the outcome.

Can’t wait to bring this with me to festival booths and pride :)

After 9 months of work, my Oseberg tapestry sweater is complete!

This was my first sweater knitted in the round, first stranded colourwork project, and my first time steeking. It was definitely my most challenging project so far, and a lot of learning and research was involved. I used a colourwork chart created by the very talented Molly Gifford, which is available for free on Ravelry

For reference, this is one of the fragments uncovered from the gravesite:

Some scholars think that the Oseberg tapestry includes the earliest known artistic depiction of Odin's ravens, Huginn and Muninn. So I added them to the sleeves as a little Easter egg.
