1X03 Commoditie

Excellent episode! (Yay! Gaius from Battlestar Galactica!)

I loved it in my first watch, but even more now, when I already in love with the show. This was the episode that made me love it in the first place.

Porthos’ storyline with the slaver is really good and important.

And that scene of Athos in front of his burning house and his burning heart… I love that in this version he is more vulnerable and lost and hurting than even in the book.

Just one little thing I wish was different - Milady called the count “Athos” in his flashbacks. But it’s not his true name. it’s a name he took when he joined the musketeers and wanted to conceal his true identity. So she should have call him by his real name, Olivier.

I’m having fun with this rewatch!

I suppose I’m not the only one.who noticed the double meaning of “the woman I love to death”- in other words

1.,He ordered her death 

2. He loved her to death

Am I mistaken?

That’s something I don’t like from the series. Aramis is also called Aramis by his former fiancee, but his real name is René. My headcanon is they are concealing their real names (Olivier de La Fère, René d’Herblay) using old nicknames instead. Maybe childhood nicknames known only by their family and loved ones.

I think that Athos and Porthos chose those nicknames together, they are to simillar for it to be a coincendece. And Aramis, who joined the musketeers after a while, chose a name that sounds good with the two others. People from the musketeers' past should call them by their real names. It's such an easy thing to do right! Why don't they :(

1X02 Sleight of Hand

1X01 Friends and Enemies.

So. Rewatch.

Things I don't like:

1. It's not canon! It's so not canon it's hurts, because it could have been the best canon adaptation ever with this cast :(

2. I really don't like the King. He is a pathetic little man. Even in the book he is not so stupid and weak.

3. I don't like the Cardinal as well. They made him evil and petty. All he thinks about is how to make the musketeers' lives difficult. Like he doesn't have better things to do! Like... Oh l don't know... state matters?? And, he kills the men and women he doesn't like with his own hands. Yeah right. 

4. One little thing. They drink out of glass goblets in the tavern. That is absurd. They had clay or tin mugs in taverns in the 17th century. Glass was expensive and the privilege of the aristocracy. I know it's silly to let those small things to bother me, but it is so easy to do it right, so why not...

Things I do like:

Well... all the rest :D

I love the fact that even though the story is not canon, the musketeers themselves remaind true to their book's characters. Well, maybe they could make d'Artagnan less dramatic and add him some more of that Gascon sense of humor Dumas wrote him so brilliantly. And maybe Aramis should be a bit more delicate. Porthos and Athos are perfect.

And of course the friendship of the trio is the best part in the episode. In any episode actually.

I love Constanse in this version. Even when she does the most וnlikely things like in the "10 sues" scene. She is smart, brave and kind. And I like the fact that she is not just sitting around waiting for life to happen to her.

Oh and the soundtrack is perfect!.<3

 I've watched the BBC Musketeers only once until now. So, I think it's time for some rewatch. Yes. Rewatch it is.

"This is the gentleman I am going to fight with," said Athos, pointing to d'Artagnan with his hand and saluting him with the same gesture.

"Why, it is with him I am also going to fight," said Porthos.

"But not before one o'clock," replied d'Artagnan.

"And I also am to fight with this gentleman," said Aramis, coming in his turn onto the place.

"But not until two o'clock," said d'Artagnan, with the same calmness.

"But what are you going to fight about, Athos?" asked Aramis.

"Faith! I don't very well know. He hurt my shoulder. And you, Porthos?"

"Faith! I am going to fight--because I am going to fight," answered Porthos, reddening.

Athos, whose keen eye lost nothing, perceived a faintly sly smile pass over the lips of the young Gascon as he replied, "We had a short discussion upon dress."

"And you, Aramis?" asked Athos.

"Oh, ours is a theological quarrel," replied Aramis, making a sign to d'Artagnan to keep secret the cause of their duel.

Athos indeed saw a second smile on the lips of d'Artagnan.

"Indeed?" said Athos.

"Yes; a passage of St. Augustine, upon which we could not agree," said the Gascon.

"Decidedly, this is a clever fellow," murmured Athos.

The king's Musketeers are arrested by the Guards of the cardinal, are they?" continued M. de Treville, as furious at heart as his soldiers, but emphasizing his words and plunging them, one by one, so to say, like so many blows of a stiletto, into the bosoms of his auditors. "What! Six of his Eminence's Guards arrest six of his Majesty's Musketeers! MORBLEU! My part is taken! I will go straight to the louvre; I will give in my resignation as captain of the king's Musketeers to take a lieutenancy in the cardinal's Guards, and if he refuses me, MORBLEU! I will turn abbe."

After the Giles gifset I made some time ago (before the cruel and painful death of my poor poor laptop), I thought about all kinds of characters that remind me of Athos.

The eldest among his friends, not just by years, but by spirit. Smart like hell, but never showing it unless he asked. Brave, but always cold headed. A man with that quiet power about him that makes the others look up to him. And, of course, has a dark and painful past that reflects all his life.

So there are some characters that remind me of that special man. Not all of them have all of the things above in them, but they have similarities.

It's of my favourite books ever and much more than just adventure, Best friendship story I've ever read. Not only The Three Musketeers but all the d'Artagnan trilogy.

Favourite Scenes #2 Frst Fight Together.

"There are five of them," said Athos, half aloud, "and we are but three; we shall be beaten again, and must die on the spot, for, on my part, I declare I will never appear again before the captain as a conquered man."

Athos, Porthos, and Aramis instantly drew near one another, while Jussac drew up his soldiers.

This short interval was sufficient to determine d'Artagnan on the part he was to take. It was one of those events which decide the life of a man; it was a choice between the king and the cardinal--the choice made, it must be persisted in. To fight, that was to disobey the law, that was to risk his head, that was to make at one blow an enemy of a minister more powerful than the king himself. All this the young man perceived, and yet, to his praise we speak it, he did not hesitate a second. Turning towards Athos and his friends, "Gentlemen," said he, "allow me to correct your words, if you please. You said you were but three, but it appears to me we are four."

"But you are not one of us," said Porthos.

"That's true," replied d'Artagnan; "I have not the uniform, but I have the spirit. My heart is that of a Musketeer; I feel it, monsieur, and that impels me on."

"Withdraw, young man," cried Jussac, who doubtless, by his gestures and the expression of his countenance, had guessed d'Artagnan's design. "You may retire; we consent to that. Save your skin; begone quickly."

D'Artagnan did not budge.

"Decidedly, you are a brave fellow," said Athos, pressing the young man's hand.

"Come, come, choose your part," replied Jussac.

"Well," said Porthos to Aramis, "we must do something."

"Monsieur is full of generosity," said Athos.

But all three reflected upon the youth of d'Artagnan, and dreaded his inexperience.

"We should only be three, one of whom is wounded, with the addition of a boy," resumed Athos; "and yet it will not be the less said we were four men."

"Yes, but to yield!" said Porthos.

"That IS difficult," replied Athos.

D'Artagnan comprehended their irresolution.

"Try me, gentlemen," said he, "and I swear to you by my honor that I will not go hence if we are conquered."

"What is your name, my brave fellow?" said Athos.

"d'Artagnan, monsieur."

"Well, then, Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and d'Artagnan, forward!" cried Athos.

"Come, gentlemen, have you decided?" cried Jussac for the third time.

"It is done, gentlemen," said Athos.

"And what is your choice?" asked Jussac.

"We are about to have the honor of charging you," replied Aramis, lifting his hat with one hand and drawing his sword with the other.

Favourite Scenes #1 A conjugal scene

Athos slowly raised his pistol, stretched out his arm so that the weapon almost touched Milady's forehead, and then, in a voice the more terrible from having the supreme calmness of a fixed resolution, "Madame," said he, "you will this instant deliver to me the paper the cardinal signed; or upon my soul, I will blow your brains out."

With another man, Milady might have preserved some doubt; but she knew Athos. Nevertheless, she remained motionless.

"You have one second to decide," said he.

Milady saw by the contraction of his countenance that the trigger was about to be pulled; she reached her hand quickly to her bosom, drew out a paper, and held it toward Athos.

"Take it," said she, "and be accursed!"

Athos took the paper, returned the pistol to his belt, approached the lamp to be assured that it was the paper, unfolded it, and read:

"Dec. 3, 1627

"It is by my order and for the good of the state that the bearer of this has done what he has done.

"Theme for Athos" - Murray Gold, BBC Musketeers Original Soundtrack [unreleased]

BBC merchandising, why are you not releasing an official soundtrack so we can have proper versions of this and the rest of the music?  I would buy it.  I will buy it, if it ever happens.  Christmas is just around the corner, this is the perfect opportunity to make a least tenners worth of sales to the fans!

Ohhh, I didn't knew it was Murray Gold's music! He is so talented! I love every piece he made in Doctor Who.
