Also, this study suggests that late-diagnosed autism isn’t “less severe” than early-diagnosed autism. It’s not that late-diagnosed people have fewer autism-linked alleles and so they only cross the diagnosis threshold when their environment becomes very stressful (which is apparently called the unitary theory): it’s that there’s a full different developmental trajectory for people who were diagnosed later. People with later-diagnosed autism appear to be more likely to have mental health difficulties and comorbidities like ADHD, while they’re less likely to have behavioural difficulties.

This is not to say that the two subgroups have a clear delineation between them or that we’ll see autism split into multiple diagnoses soon. But it’s still big news!

To be fair the correlations are not super strong, and you wouldn’t be able to classify individual autistic people based just on their age at diagnosis: but on a population level, this trend does exist, and that’s sooo crazy to me!
