Outside of the interactive Mario head on its title screen, Super Mario 64 does not support vertex animation, i.e. animation where the individual vertices of a model are each moving separately with a fluid motion. This kind of animation is usually used to distort parts of objects for squashing or stretching effects. The game can apply deformations to entire meshes, but not to individual vertices.

This is mostly accomplished by simply designing the models from the ground up to not use that kind of animation, however, some objects need to visibly extend and retract, such as this staircase found in the Bowser courses. For an animation engine that can use vertex animation, this would be trivial.

Super Mario 64, however, simply uses five separate models of the staircase with successive levels of extension that it shows on consecutive frames, essentially using an equivalent to stop-motion animation (top: footage of the effect in action, middle and bottom: the five models). Since the animation is so brief, this is actually nearly indistinguishable from a fluid motion, but this technique would have been very inconvenient to use for long animations.
