Elizabeth Rose - Shoulda Coulda Woulda.
Anytime these three words are said in any combination, I immediately reference this Lyrics Born gemstone with Sam Sparro. It was hidden away, late on the “As You Were” record, but if you got to that point in the album, you were awarded with some disco/rap/pop madness. This new Elizabeth Rose single, co-written with M-Phazes, is very much not the combination of those three genres, but it is still very, very good.
Elizabeth Rose's new record is slated for a March 2016 release if her twitter account is anything to go by. Also, it'll be good so go buy it.
Marcus Marr & Chet Faker - The Trouble With Us.
This is an absolutely mental tune and the result of a four-day studio session, a beard shave (which sent Australia nuts) and some extremely excellent guitar plucking. Play on repeat. Loudly.
Safia - Embracing Me
Caught the 3-part energy bundle that is a Safia show in the early part of this year at The Hills Are Alive. They were billed as the heavy hitter on a mostly Australian bill that involved the musical freak of nature that is Harts. Essentially, you’ve got to be pretty good to top that dude. The set, and the initial listen of this, their new single, didn't disappoint. Ben Woolner is the voice of Safia, and watching that dude manage the vocal range he’s got, while jumping like he’s front and centre at a Slipnot show is as impressive as it gets. It’s on full display on this single, and the album (which hopefully isn’t far away) should be very good indeed.
FIVE/FIVE
How Brandon Todd dunks a basketball.
Incredible.
Harts - Breakthough
I’m just leaving this here, because this is perhaps the best riff of 2015.... and it’s only fucking April (plus it came out in February so there’s that).
Tinashe - All Hands on Deck (Giraffage Remix)
I have no clue how I’ve managed to sift along looking for new music on the internet and not come across Giraffage. It’s mental. Thankfully the universe is sorted and I’ve found his soundcloud, which is never to be unfollowed ever again. Especially if he decides that whipping out 90′s inspired tech remixes of super-babe Tinashe are worth cranking out every now and then. The Cashmere-cat produced original is epic (with a serious video to boot), but this re-work actually takes it to a different realm in the best possible way.
Tuxedo - Number One
I'd love it if every weekday I hopped online, and there was a new tune from Mayer Hawthorne. It'd be really great for raising the general level of funk in my life, but mainly because I wouldn't have to wait so damn long in between Mayer Hawthorne tracks.
The Tuxedo collab is sensational as a whole, and now there's a new record in the works for the 3rd of March 2015, the worlds funk level will thankfully be at a high for a little while longer. For now, this first single will definitely get us through. Enjoy.
Mary J. Blige - Right Now (Prod. Disclosure).
The original Queen B drops the first tune from her new record, "The London Sessions". MJB recently said, "the UK is a better place to make music than the States," which is no small statement from a Bronx native and US Pop chart staple.
The song itself might have Mary J Blige on the artwork (as yet unreleased), but it's very much a "Family Affair" (sorry, couldn't help it). Disclosure on production duties along with Jimmy Napes behind the mixing desk and Sam Smith co-writing lyrics.
She's no slouch when it comes to releasing a record, but Mary J Blige is really stepping out of a very successful comfort zone here. She's been around long enough that putting her next release in the hands of a group (all young enough to be her kids) is a risk. But risks like these are definitely viable, and a fantastic way to re-introduce yourself to a new generation.
"The London Sessions" will be her twelfth release, and it's the one I care the most about. With a first single like this... how can you not.
Theophilus London - Tribe (Feat. Jessie Boykins III)
First single from his new album to his the web-waves and produced by Brodinski no less. If you're a Theophilus follower, you'll know it's not the first time the two have collaborated, only this time Theo isn't on feature duties.
This is fire, and hopefully is the shot in the arm to put Theophilus front and centre with his peers. It's long overdue.
George Maple - Talk Talk.
Move over Jessie Ware / Sinead Harnett / Jess Glynne. I've found my new wife. This is excellent. Really excellent.
Kindness - World Restart (Feat. Kelela & Ade)
Could not be more excited for new Kindness material. Pre-Order the album and do your ears a massive favour.
Snakehips - After I Met U.
They're geniuses. I mean... they're really geniuses. Listen until 2.18 in, before they so cleverly reveal the sample - which they've also bootlegged.
Consider my brain, exploded.
Cause I see some ladies tonight that should be having my cereal.
Chuck.
