I’m tired because the first post that started this mess is still getting traction. I’m tired because it brought everything out of the woodwork from people who used everything from alt right terminology to labeling people radfems and terfs as a way to deflect criticism, to creeps who all but admitted they wanted to defend cp, to threatening those who were critical of AO3 and their policies.

I don’t know if this is deliberate or not, but I really want to call attention to the way this is worded to make it look like people who ship inherently unacceptable pairings are the goods guys who are victims of unprovocated attacks.

People who ignore pedophilic ships are the good guys. “Ship and let ship,” no matter what. They believe we can all coexist in the same fandom space and have a good time.

But the people who are actively against pedophilic, incestuous, etc ships and who seek out the adults producing that content? Those are “antis,” the bad guys.

And then the genius of it is that the “anti” label is also used for people who ARE actually just plain old jerks and who attack people just because they’re shipping something that IS innocent that they don’t like.

So the word used to label people against pedophilia is also used for people who are being mean for no reason, thus grouping them together and making it possible to invalidate the first group.

“OP is an anti.” People who understand anti to mean “attacks people who don’t agree with their ships” will understandably think “wow, OP is a jerk!” And they may not look any further and discover OP actually only actively shames people who ship pedophilia, incest, etc.

These same people use excuses such as mental illness, their own history of abuse, etc. to argue that they cannot be shamed for their content, because it’s discrimination against them.

They are using concepts of social justice and bigotry to their advantage to rearrange the situation so that they are the victims.

this is not related to my blog at all, but I just gotta say as someone who used to smoke daily, IT’S SO EASY to be a good person and stay away from crowded areas or avoid people when you’re smoking. I would literally cross the street if I could not get far enough away from people. I once walked half a mile away from bike time [this big music and motorcycle event in my city] because so many people were walking around and I didn’t wanna smoke by anyone. I go as far away as possible if I can because I don’t wanna be the cause of harm to anyone. If you happen to be walking by?? the least you could do is switch which hand your holding your cig in, and go towards the edge of the sidewalk and don’t breathe any smoke towards whoever you’re walking by.

just be a good person!! Hm. So, okay, obviously you’re white and obviously you have some money to spare, or maybe you’re just ignorant and stupid and can’t use your brain (that happens, when you spend your time reading Sheith fanfiction), so I’ll try to explain this to you in as simple a way as possible. 

When people (especially people of color, especially Black people, especially Black LBT women) make donation posts, there is the risk of receiving little to no money, even in the case of emergencies. For the sake of argument, I’d like to use my friend Taylor (keepthatenergy) who is currently falsely imprisoned and whose bail is set at an astonishing $10,000. In the few posts made by other friends where they are distressed, pleading, begging for help because Taylor’s family is already under extreme financial duress, she is mocked, the friends are abused verbally and people get the idea that this is a scam, even though there is proof that it is. This isn’t irregular. Every donation post I’ve ever seen by a person of color is attacked by freaks telling us to ‘get a job’, ‘stop being so lazy’, ‘stop wasting money’, blah blah blah etcetera, etcetera

Compare this to the treatment of archiveofourown, a website which has been doing this weird ‘give us money’ thing for as long as I’ve known the site to be up. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, way over their goals, and no significant change to the website. It’s still, if I’m correct, in beta phases, and you can’t join unless you’ve been invited. It has a serious issue with child pornography and incest fics and rape and abuse and extreme racism, but it gets money, week after week, month after month, and people rush to defend tossing their money to a website that hasn’t changed a bit.

And then see the reactions to these two things—impoverished people in need of help, desperately in need of help have to ask over and over and over for just a few dollars to get them through the week and are abused; a website that’s hoarding a shit ton of cash is praised. It is an issue of racism. There’s no dissonance at all, you’re just not using your brain, beloved. Honestly, consider why people think it’s more important to donate money to a fansite that’s not changing and hosts child porn (and was created to host these ‘unpleasant’ fanfictions, let’s not forget) and defends its nastier fanfictions than to people of color. Consider what would make white people feel more comfortable giving their money to a collection of rape fics and racist fantasies over people who are starving, who are fighting homelessness, who are suffering, who are in of shelter and food and water and safety. 

Long story short — it’s got everything to do with race, and yes A03 is racist! Startling racist, as I’m sure many of my Black writers can tell you because most of its users are—shocking!—white people.

I have been patient with this whole “fictional ”“"sexual transgressions”“” are okay (i.e. rape fantasies, pedophilia, incest)“ crowd, because I believe they do not see themselves as dangerous, I believe that they believe they aren’t hurting anyone, that they need this, and even that they’re helping others achieve liberation and release. I am twenty years old now. I was on the internet around the time tags like Incest, NonCon/Dubcon, and Underage Sex were popular on every fanfiction site. I know the popularity of these things convinced you it was not wrong, but it was. It was wrong. You cannot hide behind psychology, you cannot hide behind feminist theory, because until the moment someone called you out on it I sincerely believe you never stopped to question why these things were popular and if you should be consuming it, because everyone else was, and surely everyone couldn’t be wrong.

But we are all grown now and we are responsible for our actions. We have a responsibility to reduce the threats young women encounter on the internet. Stop telling them this is good and normal. you can’t ask for money or include links for donations on ao3, there’s no limit to tagging so the entire archive is cluttered with falsely tagged fics, there isn’t a block button and ao3 has been known to ignore or punish writers who stand up to harrassment in their comments section. like obv the rampant pedophilia, incest and rape glorification should be enough to make anyone realize donating to the platform is terrible but if you all are gonna pretend to care about writers, why don’t you go and ask precious ao3 to actually make their platform supportive of us lmao
