good afternoon to :
unemployed autistic adults
single autistic adults
autistic adult virgins
autistic adults who don't have many or even any friends
autistic adults who can't live independently
autistic adults who need support with everyday activities
autistic adults who don't have the support they need
autistic adults with interests considered "childish"
none of these things make you less of an adult
Fuck it, time for some autism positivity. Fellow autistics, what are you BETTER at because you're autistic?
Things I'm better at because I'm autistic:
Waiting. I find it hilarious to see my neurotypical family members stress about having to wait in traffic or at a doctor's office. If I arrive somewhere and get told to wait, say, 20 minutes, I'm not bothered at all. Autism had made my internal world extremely rich, so it's the easiest thing in the world to sit back and let my brain entertain me for a few minutes.
Remembering birthdays. One of my special interests is dates. It's mainly years, but it can also be specific dates too. If I like an album, for example, I know the year it was released off the top of my head. And if you tell me the year you were born, I'll never forget it. There are some dates I just like, and if your birthday happens to be funky to me or I consider you a friend, I'll always remember it. Without a fault.
Memorising sequences in a system. Another one of my special interests is chess, and because the game has specific rules and operates in a patterned way, I find it really easy to memorise sequences of moves. If I study a chess opening once, I know it. The same thing goes for chemical reactions and math problems. If I know how the system works, I just... know it.
Knowing when something's off with my food. Autism makes me very sensitive to change, so if there's something even the slightest bit weird about my food, I notice it. I've never gotten food poisoning lmao!
Understanding my pets. I have animal-geared hyperempathy, so I'm extremely aware of how they're feeling and what their needs are. My parents are often confused when my dogs start crying out of nowhere, but I always understand it instinctively.

I'm gonna say it
Parents of disabled children aren't victims. An adult isn't a hero for looking after a disabled kid, especially when that particular kid is THEIR CHILD!!! That's what a parent is SUPPOSED to do! Stop glorifying those parents like disabled children are burdens
THIS.
Educate yourself.

Yep.
Me except instead of a therapist, it’s the autism tags on tumblr. The only way I learned about what autism actually is is from other autistic people.
