alastor's perspective on The Flashback and his rejection
after the finale, I think I have a full read on vox and alastor's past from alastor's perspective. I'm sure people have already made posts on it but I gotta lay it all out.
alastor always wanted to find a way to get out of his deal with rosie. at some point, he figured out to do so, he needs someone ELSE to become the strongest sinner in hell to break the terms of their agreement.
cue up-and-running young overlord vox, growing his power and becoming "as close to equals as [he'd] imagined down here" with alastor.
I think alastor saw the potential in him and attached himself to him because he thought if it was anyone, HE would be the one to break him out of his deal. yes, in a way, he WAS just trying to use him for his own needs BUT I think in a similar case to alastor becoming "accustomed" to the hotel, he did find vox entertaining and enjoyable to be around and willingly spent time with him as if they were friends (no matter what alastor himself says).
and I really, truly believe him when he says he "respected" vox.
and I do think he genuinely thinks vox ruined it.
he thought he was so close to freedom. but then his key to said freedom decides to stunt his development by relying on HIM and even bringing up his power! no, you don't need MY power, YOU'RE supposed to become the most powerful sinner in hell!
he freaks out. there goes his plan to get his freedom!
he thought vox could surpass him. but this offer indicated to him that he couldn't, and he really WAS disappointed. he went and ruined it. at this point, he lost his respect for him.
"THERE ARE NO FRIENDS IN HELL, VINCENT."
I can't really tell if this one is pure emotion/a freak out from alastor who's projecting or if he was saying this in an attempt to scare vox out of relying on anyone else ever again so that he would truly become the most powerful sinner... but I do like to think it's emotionally-fueled.
but either way, it didn't work, and vox later got two other partners in the form of the vees.
years later, season 2, alastor has tolerated his deal with rosie for years, but now he's reached a breaking point. his scar and busted up staff is grating on him and he wants out. he revisits his old plan.
I know that it's a joke that alastor thought of inciting divorce in the vees after sitting under the MORNINGSTAR family statue but. I think it really is true. his plan was to get captured and stir shit up in the vees so that vox would become the most powerful sinner WITHOUT the vees. and this time, vox wouldn't rely on anyone else. and this time, it would actually work!
honestly, I think this reading would make "alastor accepts vox's offer" aus very interesting! imagine him still trying to get vox to become the strongest while working with him! but I don't wanna get too off track, hope I layed this out coherently!
(note: this blog FIRMLY sees alastor as aroace so please try to respect that in the notes! thanks!)
