genuinely. i know i JUST made a pwhl dedicated blog after being a consistent boston pro womens hockey team #supporter since . 2021? but i might have to take a season away from the pwhl. its to a point where more things are making me frustration cry than are making me Celebrate and Have Fun. so unofficial official announcement
you will be having the worst week of your life and then the fleet dont protect müller
also . like while im in the mood. i feel like i've bitched and moaned about the inaccessibility of lowell but i do really want you to get the scope. let's just say you live in boston. anywhere in the actual city the team the boston fleet play for. you probably don't regularly use or have access to a car because parking is typically expensive, hard to find, and there are a lot of trains and buses etc. okay cool.
you want to see. the boston fleet from boston. that's cool. let's say it's a friday night 7pm puck drop. awesome. you get off of work, you hustle to north station - the only station In boston that will get you to lowell - you pile on one of these packed train with a bunch of commuters. not a big deal, we all deal with it.
i'd recommend that 5:05 train if you want to get there before puck drop because. well. it's gonna be a 25-30min walk unless you wanna also pay and hope for an uber! which, if you're like me, you probably don't after paying $11 ($22 round trip) for the commuter rail (about 5x the cost of the subway)
phew, okay, you've walked or dished out cash for an uber. the puck drops, it's 7pm! you enjoy your game, if you're me the fleet lose because they always lose when i'm there, etc. game ends, it's about 9:30. okay! let me hustle back to the train station so i can get home!!
oh except. these are the last two trains back to north station. and well, if you want to stay for the WHOLE GAME i guess you'll just have to miss the 9:50 train home. i guess you'll just have to. wait around for two hours for the next one... oh.... maybe you can find a bar... or something..... or call a friend with a car maybe.....
but hey, these are the weekday train times! maybe the weekends would be easier, anyways!
oh, nevermind, it's Worse (: better leave before the end of the game or you might get stuck in lowell until 5am! :D
of course, you could always drive! maybe you own a car or can phone a friend! i just hope you don't want to leave too soon, because every single time it has taken me 20-30 mins to just leave the garage :D
both times with the pwhl expansion draft everything about it has made me so fucking angry im like wow maybe i actually hate this league LOL
i understand vast change is expected every year because the league is so new and everchanging and growing. however. there's also so many women not on contract or not playing or whatever that i dont think allowing teams to protect a normal 5-6 players is that fucking detrimental. especially considering there is also the Normal Draft.
and i really do think when this league continuously expands they keep thinking exclusively about reaching new fans which is true and fair However they don't consider preexisting fans in preexisting markets and how formats like this make the league genuinely annoying to consume. for people who like to learn and get attached a whole roster - which i know i am not alone in - its expected for there to be a handful of changes every year, but when its whole star players every single season its like. okay. what the fuck is the point anymore of being a team loyal enjoyer. i'm sure its fine if you're a "i hope everyone has fun" fan but that's not me and i know thats not a good amount of people.
compared to the first seasons ive actually been watching the league less and less every year because it's hard to sustain interest in a team that does not feel like its allowed to be an established team. and this is not even considering the impact its having on players - as i'm sure we've all seen widely discussed - in regards to not being paid enough to be doing all fucking that.
both times with the pwhl expansion draft everything about it has made me so fucking angry im like wow maybe i actually hate this league LOL
This is just the crux of it isn't it.
I could never wear any of those dumb “I hope both teams have fun” shirts because no I hope my team wins by 30 and the other team explodes on the field
AND ANOTHER THING. i understand the expansion process is probably? better this year? however its so convoluted i dont understand it and thats also pissing me off on top of the sparre stuff and the everything else with the expansion.
im unemployed right now and will work for minimum wage and consistent hrs . fleet hmu
if the new teams poach ur coach Notably The One Nominated For Coach Of The Year they shouldn’t be allowed to take any players . can we consider that
sports fans are so anti-labor it makes me want to scream. so many people on r/PWHL are defending these absurdly low salaries, so many people don't understand why players might want an NMC or NTC etc. how do you even begin to convince these people that athletes deserve fair compensation for their labor?!
Reddit hockey boards may honestly be the stupidest people on earth. In general on top of a lot of sports fans anti labor sentiment there’s also the misogyny that the girls should just be happy to be earning anything and therefore we can’t go “I think it wouldn’t be too crazy if they earned roughly the same amount as the average offices email marketing coordinator for doing something that only .0001% of the population can do, will forever alter their body, takes a 24/7commitment to conditioning, and is raising their rich as hell owners networth.”
as bleak as it is that the lowest salary in the pwhl is 13% of the nhl league minimum when comparing per-regular season game payout (ie dividing the total yearly salary by 30 and 82, respectively) i think the most helpful framework for discussing how the pwhl pays its players is cost of living. because while people can try to argue about the difference in league valuation, i think it goes without saying that if the players are expected to treat hockey as a full-time job then they should make a livable wage relative to the market they are in. definitely raises concerns about sj being one of the expansion cities going into next season.
highest paid player in the pwhl made 16% of the nhl league minimum last season btw

“I have always wanted to change the world through sports. Playing hockey empowered me and gave me an amazing platform to advocate for the issues that matter the most to me, especially gender equality and LGBTQ+ inclusion… Trans athletes deserve those same rights and equal opportunities in sports. I now mentor young athletes, inspiring them to find their voices through hockey. Every child, regardless of gender identity, should have the chance to access the lifelong skills that sports teach like confidence, perseverance and leadership.”

We love to see it. 👏👏👏 Too many of the women who have reached elite levels in hockey are very quiet on this topic. Nice to see someone incoming who has spoken up.
