How to Pick a Birth Date Guide
Okay this is like one of my favorite things in the world to do, picking a birth date for your character can be an insanely fun thing if you play into the astrology side of things. On one hand, you have a month and a number and a year, and that’s it. On the other, you have a fun little side tool to show your character off, play matchmaker, and laugh with your friends over a daily horoscope like nerds. Really? You’d give that up? I mean don’t take it so seriously you ignore plotlines or something, but– well here’s how to get that little part of things set up! Since I love it and all. Did I mention I’m a huge nerd? No? Well Mom, Dad, I have something to tell you…

Writing Source - Virtues and Vices
Guide to virtues and vices when picking character traits. Based on theories of virtue ethics. So in virtue ethics the key is balance. Every virtue has two vices, one of inadequacy, and one of excess. This can be used to explore yourself, your characters, or even your views on activism. So for example:
Vice of Inadequacy —- Virtue —– Vice of Excess
Selfishness —– Kindness ———- Abnegation Explanation: Kindness is caring for others wherever possible even when its inconvenient and even when they aren’t perfectly sympathetic. Selfishness is not caring for others, and Abnegation is 1) not a virtue, Divergent and 2) taking kindness so far that you actually neglect yourself. “You cannot serve from an empty cup” is an easy way of remembering the difference.
Impotence —– Advocacy —- Wrath Explanation: It is noteworthy that this is NOT the christian virtue/vice set that wrath is associated with. In biblical teaching wrath is the vice of inadequacy to patience, but it needs to be said that Biblical teaching has this little problem where it demands people see vice and virtue as a duality instead of a scale. I’ll talk more about that at the bottom. Impotence is the idea that you never allow yourself to get angry or do anything about a situation, believing that you can’t or that it isn’t worth the fight - this is different than cowardice, which is knowing it’s worth the fight but being to frightened to engage. Advocacy is to allow yourself enough wrath to put yourself out there and stand up for what you believe is right, and demand change, even if it means destroying some systems or harming those who benefit from oppression. Wrath is being always angry, all the time, and not bothering to differentiate what requires a fight and what doesn’t, or allowing yourself to be angry about things you cannot fix. Thus “if you aren’t angry you aren’t paying attention” is a statement of wrath at least as often as it is one of advocacy. Prudishness —————— Presence —– Lust Explanation: Being present in the moment and enjoying temporary pleasures and joys of the senses is good, and depriving yourself of these thing is unhealthy, but focusing only on the moment to moment pleasures with no thought to consequences or the future is a negative. Deceitfulness —————- Honesty ———— Indiscretion Explanation: Telling the truth is not always the right thing to do. If you lie more often than not, you’re probably deceitful, but never lying is dangerous because the truth can sometimes do more damage than lying. Honesty is telling the truth most of the time, but knowing when to make an exception. Actively misleading someone so you can take advantage of a situation is dishonest - so is allowing them to assume things that advantage you at the price of harming them. Telling the truth about, for example, the money on the ground not belonging to you, having an intervention for someone you’re worried about, etc., are honest. The phrase “Yes, officer, I know someone who’s undocumented” if true, is indiscretion, not honesty. Infidelity ————– Loyalty ————— Zealotry Explanation: I feel this is mostly self explanatory but the simple version is that holding loyalty to people or groups is generally a positive and if you have no loyalties to other people or to any particular group you’re probably a fairly awful person, but if you allow your loyalty to turn you into an unquestioning follower, you’re taking it to far. Standing by, for instance, a friend who was raised in a bigoted environment and is unlearning their prejudices, even when they slip up, is loyalty. Saying that they did one bad thing so you’re cutting them out is infidelity. Sticking with them if they say “fuck it” on improving themselves and join a hate group is zealotry. Greed ————– Charity ———— Mendicancy Explanation: Greed is valuing material things over others, charity is being willing to part with material things or go pro bono for a good cause. Mendicancy, at least in terms of virtue ethics (though certain assholes have attempted over time simply to associate it with poverty as though to make poverty itself a vice) is similar to abnegation, but as it translates to material possessions. Someone who willingly (as in, unpaid internships do not count) provides free services to the point that they cannot pay their own bills is mendicant. Value yourself and your labor, guys. It’s not greedy. Cowardice ————- Courage —————- Recklessness Explanation: A person who never fights because of fear is cowardly. A lone, unarmed twink seeking out a fight with six armed skinheads is being reckless. Courage is having fear and facing it, but also knowing when to fold ‘em. Spite /vengeance — Kindness/Mercy ——– Permissiveness Explanation: Doing something solely to spite someone, for any reason, is not a virtuous act. Showing kindness, mercy, forgiveness, etc., to people who have made mistakes and are genuinely making themselves better people is usually a positive, allowing yourself to forgive someone who has not improved or who has hurt you seriously enough becomes a vice again. If there are no consequences for hurting you, why would anyone so inclined stop? It is important to remember that this is different than impotence/advocacy/wrath, which applies to how you handle yourself while things are happening. this is about how you handle things moving foreward. Forgiving an abuser is not required under this, nor even necessarily encouraged - be too forgiving and you cross over into permissiveness, where they think they can get away with it. Actively going out and seeking revenge is also a vice. “This individual hurt me in the past, faced consequences, and improved, but I thought the consequences were inadequate and am going to seek redress by destroying their life” - spite/vengeance. “This individual hurt me and I am not going to forgive them, but they’ve dealt with the consequences and have made themselves a better person and I choose to forgive them / choose not to forgive them but will avoid them rather than seeking revenge” - Mercy. “This person has not changed their behavior and I am forgiving them anyway / I am protecting a person from the consequences of their actions because I don’t want to hurt them” - Permissiveness. I note that “not reporting because you think you won’t be believed” does not qualify as ‘permissiveness’ but the people who go out of their way to shield their abusers from consequences, if they have any other option, definitely do. Indecision —— Conviction ———- Self-righteousness Explanation: Having convictions is good, believing that yours are the only correct ones and that everyone who has a different set is inherently evil is bad. Not bothering to know what you believe in makes it impossible to make decisions or even to improve yourself, as you won’t really know what direction of development constitutes “improvement.” “I don’t care about abortion rights enough to think about my position” - indecision. “I am personally anti-abortion and would never have one, but my position should not be forced on everyone” conviction. “I am anti-abortion and want it to be illegal” - self-righteousness. This is good for figuring out the virtues and flaws that motivate characters, but its also a thing you can look at for yourself and see where you fall. Offhand I’ve noticed that abusers tend to condition victims towards abnegation - and that our society does that to women in general, actually. And that if given the option society tends to want marginalized groups to error towards impotence. As a side note it can be noted that one of the reasons I distrust religion is that the vices it most actively preaches against are the ones that make people harder to control - and denies that the other side of the coin is a vice. In other words, both wrath and impotence are vices, but by teaching people that kindness and wrath are a duality, it tacitly encourages people to move towards impotence.
Maladaptive daydreaming, also known as excessive daydreaming, is a disordered form of dissociative absorption associated with vivid and excessive fantasy activity that often involves elaborate and fanciful scenarios. It can result in distress, can replace human interaction and may interfere with normal functioning such as social life or work.[1][2] People who suffer from maladaptive daydreaming can spend more than half their days in “vivid alternative universes”

On Character: The Seven Deadly Sins
A while back I made a post on quick character profiles, and one of the things I included was assigning each character a heavenly virtue and deadly sin. It can be a fun way to differentiate characters and break them down to their most basic parts. Last week’s post was on the seven virtues, so this post is all about the seven sins!
1. Lust (Luxuria).
This is the most obvious one; an insatiable need for all things sex. How do they control these urges? Does this character’s lust lead to bad behaviour, taking advantage of other people? Where does this lust come from? How many of their lustful thoughts lead to lustful actions? Is it something they keep to themselves? How does this affect romantic and platonic relationships in their life? The main upside to someone with this sin is that they’re probably sex-positive, which is always nice. There’s (hopefully) no room for sex-shaming in this person’s life.
2. Gluttony (Gula).
Gluttony is the sin to counter Temperance; it’s all about overindulgence. It usually refers to food or drink, but it could easily be about something more material. It’s also used regarding alcohol and drug use. So, why does this character overindulge? Do they simply think they deserve it, or is this there a void they’re trying to fill? Where does their Gluttony get them? If they’re a glutton for alcohol, for example, how do they pay for it? How does this affect other aspects of their life? Are they obsessed with these indulgences? They might prioritise these indulgences over friends and family, even hurt them to get what they’re craving.
3. Greed (Avaritia).
While Gluttony is more about indulgences like food, Greed is about material possessions and wealth. This person could be wealthy and hoarding their wealth, could be obsessed with gathering more material goods they don’t need. How do they obtain this wealth? Do they manipulate, steal, take advantage of people less fortunate than them? Do they try to take opportunities from people who need them more? Do they care about any of the people they hurt? Why are they so greedy, and what would it take for them to stop? Could they be stopped at all? This character is probably not very charitable, probably quite selfish. Does this make them a solitary person? What would happen if they lost their wealth? Would they have any support, or have they driven everyone away with their Greed?
4. Sloth (Acedia).
This is generally defined as laziness but also sometimes includes depression/self-pity. Self-pity can lead to inactivity, making excuses to not get things done and so on. (When I’m talking about self-pity, I’m not referring to pity induced by depression or other mental illnesses). Discussing laziness generally, what makes this person lazy? Are they used to having everything done for them? Do they simply lack any concrete ambition or motivation? Are they happy to just coast through life without making much effort to really do anything? Is this a source of frustration for the people in their life who work hard and have clear ambitions?
5. Wrath (Ira).
This is extreme anger or a need for revenge. Does this character let their temper get the best of them? Has this ever resulted in them hurting someone, even someone they loved? Is it just physical harm they cause through their anger, or can it also be psychological? Their behaviour could be more deliberate with real forethought or more spur-of-the-moment. Is this a pattern of problematic behaviour? Or does their anger usually result in damage to themselves or to their own property? People with these issues tend not to be very patient or forgiving. Have they tried to improve this flaw within themselves, or do they always see their anger as justified, even with the extreme reactions they might have? Are there people in their life that fear them because of this?
6. Envy (Invidia).
Envy is the need to be better than others, or to have what others have for yourself. This can be rooted in insecurity, or just a general dissatisfaction with their life. It’s easy to feel envious of what other people have if this character’s life isn’t living up to all their expectations. Does this Envy lead to resentment? Does it negatively affect the relationships they have with people they might be envious of? Does it result in bitterness, feelings of isolation? Is it something they feel comfortable expressing or do they keep it hidden to themselves?
7. Pride (Superbia).
Pride is about the need to feel superior, to feel more important, to feel better. Pride can also lead to a lack of self esteem i.e. the fragile ego. People with this sin might always feel the need to one-up someone, to prove themselves better. They might be very competitive, or even insecure. When does this need to be better than other people go too far? Do they ever fail at being better, or in their eyes, are they always superior? What happens if they do fail? Does their confidence draw people to them, or push then away? Does their Pride lead to them getting into situations that are out of their depth? Does it lead to them acting recklessly?

Writing Tip June 4th
A list of body language phrases.
I’ve included a very comprehensive list, organized by the type of body movement, hand and arm movements, facial expressions etc. In some cases, a phrase fits more than one heading, so it may appear twice. Possible emotions are given after each BL phrase unless the emotion is indicated within the phrase. (They are underlined for emphasis, not due to a hyperlink.)
Note: I’ve included a few body postures and body conditions as they are non-verbal testimony to the character’s physical condition.
