I am grabbing anyone who talks about influencers (youtube, podcasts, articles, I don't care) by the shoulders and begging them to accept that you do not need to stifle criticism of them in a compliment sandwich. You do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them. You do not have to say "good for you" or "get your bag" or "do your thing" when the thing in question is: actively making the world a worse place by promoting hyperconsumerism, ragebaiting, encouraging the people watching to feel bad about themselves, and generally doing things that take no admirable work or skill and deserve no financial reward.
And the lying! Don't forget about the lying!
#also this rant is brought to you partly by the fact that i read a godawful novel about influencers#and the author's note included a ghastly section about how influencing gets so much flak because it's primarily a women's field#no dingus it's because it's a horrible 'field' and the people in it are horrible too
