To Live Amidst The Unreal. by galaxies and dust
Ductia (Cantigas 248-353, Alfonso X el Sabio, 1221-1284), Hesperion XXI & Jordi Savall
Alfonso X (23 November 1221 – 4 April 1284), called the Wise (Spanish: el Sabio), was the King of Castile, León and Galicia from 30 May 1252 until his death.
Alfonso X was a prolific author of Galician poetry and he commissioned or co-authored numerous works of music during his reign. These works included Cantigas d’escarnio e maldicer and the vast compilation Cantigas de Santa Maria (“Songs to the Virgin Mary”), which was written in Galician-Portuguese and figures among the most important of his works. The Cantigas form one of the largest collections of vernacular monophonic songs to survive from the Middle Ages. They consist of 420 poems with musical notation. The poems are for the most part on miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary.
"Tant m’abelis" (“So much I love”) is a medieval song by Catalan troubadour Berenguer de Palou or Berenguier de Palazol (1160-1209). It is written in Occitan, a Romance language spoken in many parts of Europe.
Here’s the short version by early music group Capella de Ministrers (singer: Ruth Rosique).
Occitan lyrics:
English translation:
So much I love joy and love and song, mirth, sport and courtesy, that in the world there is no wealth nor riches that could make me feel happier; therefore, I know well that my lady holds the keys of all the good that I expect and hope for, and none of this can I have without her.
Alba, Hesperion XXI & Jordi Savall
Cantiga 58: De muitas guisas nos guarda de mal Santa Maria.
Como Santa Maria desviou a monja que se non fosse con un cavaleiro con que posera de ss'ir.
Splendid star on the serrated mountain, with miracles shining like a sunbeam, hear the people. From all around they rally, rejoicing, rich and poor, young and old, they assemble here to see with their own eyes, and return from it filled with grace.
Composer unknown. From the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, a 14th century Spanish manuscript. Performed by the Italian medieval music group Ensemble Micrologus on their 1995 album in fiesta.
