Hey. If people aren't aware, Microsoft admitted they know who you and where you are at all times and will give your info to the police.
They have a Global Device Identifier (GDID) Tracker that functions as a fingerprint for your PC that can surpass VPNs, proxy servers and countries. Although it can't survive a clean reinstall of Windows (it can survive updates), because Microsoft forces you to go to the internet and log in into a Microsoft account, they will be able to get to you.
Microsoft kept it secret and it was only found out when the FBI tracked a hacker thanks to the information Microsoft gave them.
You should be paying attention to this, and possibly consider moving away from Windows. If a government, especially the US government, doesn't like you for some reason, this could be seriously concerning.

For journalism, activism, or domestic abuse situations, skip Windows and use Linux routed through Tor instead of a commercial VPN. A GDID doesnāt care which VPN you use, only that itās still the same Windows installation.

Two things back that up:
Thereās no consent screen. A GDID gets assigned when you sign into a Microsoft Account. Appleās advertising identifier needs an App Tracking Transparency prompt and a visible reset; Androidās works the same way. GDID has neither, and a Windows reinstall only gets you a new number Microsoft can still get back to the same account.
Then thereās activation. Massgrave, the group behind Microsoft Activation Scripts, notes that Windows setup sends hardware info to Microsoft and gets identifiers back, the same tokens later used for Store access and licensing: āItās impossible to prevent Windows from getting a GDID without breaking activation and UWP app[s].ā Anyone who lost a license after swapping a motherboard has already met a smaller version of this.
I know not everyone has the option as often workplaces force Windows on their employees, but for your personal computers I REALLY truly suggest switching to Linux. Particularly if you are coming from Windows both Linux Mint and Zorin OS are great for beginners.
Iām not going to lie to you and say there is no learning curve - but truthfully you can learn so much from online sources that it is totally feasible to wrap your head around it. It is SO very worth it to have your PC be just that. *your* PC.
Plus, the process of installing a Linux distro really isnāt that bad. I do recommend looking into an install guide, especially if you want to keep access to Windows for certain programs you may wish to look into a guide on installing with Dual-Booting as an option.
Usually the process looks like this:
Download the Linux distro you want.
Use a program (I recommend Rufus) to flash a USB drive with the OS.
Change your BIOS (I promise itās not hard!!) to launch from the USB drive.
When you launch from USB, you will literally be able to test out the whole OS right there. You can mess around with Linux as much as you want before deciding to actually install it. I know change is scary, but there are versions of Linux out there to make transition easier than ever. Hell, if you only use your PC for gaming consider Bazzite or SteamOS.
The very first things I noticed about Linux Mint is that there was basically no bloatware added. No ads in the menus. Itās not flooding my PC with news.
Firefox was installed. Thereās a built-in software manager where you can download so many different applications for free and itās easy to use! I was literally able to install a desktop version of vencord (modded discord) through this software manager. Microsoft Office equivalents were pre-installed, and totally free.
There are guides online on how to secure your PC with Linux too, making it safe and private.
I promise you the switch to Linux will have roadbumps, but itās not nearly as difficult as you may think. You CAN do it. You can be free of Microsoft, you just have to choose to.
