omg arkco are never beating the orufrey parallels allegations
we know how their reasoning to use magic is a major plotpoint in both of their respective character arcs, right
agott draws magic selfishly, for her own gain and self-development, to prove herself
meanwhile coco first became a witch to save her mother and she continues, desperately, doing her best to help as many people as possible with her bright and beautiful magic
coco teaches agott to think about others, to create magic for them. agott teaches coco to put herself first sometimes.
but doesn't the same logic apply to orufrey?
qifrey is driven by his desire for revenge, by his desire to find out the truth about himself, what happened with his right eye and how to override the silverwood curse. recklessly, he tried on multiple occasions to escape from the great hall on his own when he was a teenager, all with the goal of regaining his memories. he has an ulterior motive for taking coco in and earlier in the manga we see him forgetting about his responsibilities as a master to chase the brimhats.
olruggio catches him before it's too late, reminding him of what's actually important. as children, he taught him the importance of magic too, he showed him companionship and continues to do so as they care for the girls together. he's teaching him what it is to trust other people, to protect them.
for olruggio, being a great witch equals to being able to help people, to make a difference. his whole magic style revolves around that, his fire keeps people warm and safe. he disregards his own needs (proper sleep, timely meals, etc) in favour of doing his job. he's so selfless that he willingly proposes to have his memories erased to save his best friend. he failed to save people once and he's bend on not letting that happen again.
just like coco, he used to be a child who got too much responsibility to bear, who carried lives of other people on their shoulders. and it's tragic in the way it alters their worldview and the way they interact with their magic
however, i don't think that as of right now we've seen qifrey doing the same thing agott did for coco. he nudges olruggio, helping him appreciate his own effort and take care of himself in small ways: by cooking for him, making him tea so he falls asleep easier. but has it ever been anything major? will olruggio's goals ever be not selfless? when will he get something good for himself and himself only? is it even possible at this point, considering that he's an adult man with settled ideals and beliefs, who's quite content with his life?
with qifrey for a best friend, i don't think so. but maybe that's why the parallel becomes even more beautiful. the small differences make the biggest impact and really show that despite having some apparent and particular similarities in their character traits and arcs, arkco and orufrey are their own people with their own unique stories. which makes the comparisons even more fun!
