so i've noticed something about orufrey's body language
and i have been going insane about it ever since! kamome shirahama your attention to details will be the death of me /pos
hands are the most expressive non-verbal tool humans have, and since it's also quite literally the tool that gives the witches their magic, watching hands in witch hat atelier is beyond important. implied spoilers up to ch93 under cut! [don't mind the language of half the screenshots, that's beside the point]
qifrey so very often tends to clasp his hands together, rubbing them against each other or simply clinging to his long robes. a gesture so telling of just how uncomfortable due to silverwood he constantly is, always slightly nervous, always tip-toeing around the edge of a cliff.
and he's been doing so since childhood! his emotions are so closed-off when it comes to casual body language, which is both an indicator of his character and the ways in which he deals with his curse. unable to trust even his closest friend, he chooses the only vaguely soothing thing: to curl into himself, to detach, to distance.
meanwhile olruggio, despite his scruffiness, generally comes off as a more open, "simple" man, hands flying all over the place when he's agitated. he expresses his emotions freely, without restrain.
qifrey curls into a ball for comfort, meanwhile olly splays like a star, comfortable in his skin an in qifrey's presence
and what happens when they start to interact?
olly keeps reaching for qifrey, talking some sense into him with his hands, with spontaneous and emotional physical touch.
he does so even upon first meeting
he keeps and keeps reaching out to qifrey, both literally and symbolically.
no matter how hard qifrey tries to run away, to hide deeper into himself, olruggio will always be there to offer him a friendly hand or otherwise
this particular parallel is especially dear to me:
they changed so much,
but they also haven't changed at all
and the culmination of this dynamic in a single image for me is this:
qifrey, gaze averted, hands uncomfortably clasped together, fake smile on his face
and olruggio, calm and confident, leaning into qifrey's personal space with familiar ease, resting an arm on his shoulder in a friendly gesture.
everything that shirahama consistently portrays as the manga goes on and the history unravels, neatly and wordlessly shown in a single static image. the art of showing, but not telling, thus nurturing a deeper understanding of these characters. absolutely brilliant
Heyy it's me again (more coherent this time because I have had more than 3h of sleep)
First off: I love all your and the others ideas for the phm x wha crossover so much it's so fun to think about so I'm just. Pushing myself in
Anyway. As an idea for the kinda Brimmhat Stratt (spoilers for chapter 80 I think): what if she already had some doubts about how the knights operate (like you said how you just can't rewipe someones memory a million times) and then canon happens and she sees how much more powerful the brimmhats are since they have no real morals, and how Ysheath's fanatic fear of forbidden magic made him almost kill more people, so thats her turning point? Or something happens before and that and that whole thing is more of a confirmation for her, since they do use kinda forbidden magic at that point already
Also! Are you planning to give Grace some students or just let him live alone somewhere? Since he is a teacher in canon but him living alone (if you ignore the eridians) until Stratt collects him is also pretty close to canon
Anyway I hope you have a great day! :]
HI HI HI you're more than welcome to push in i'm insanely glad someone shares my niche!! which, as it turns out, so many people do! and im sorry for the late reply, i was pretty busy with writing a paper
and YESSSSS you get me!!! oh that's a great idea, easthies wishes he had even a portion of stratt's composure. i feel like she'd have a lot of problems with the witch society. we've seen her in canon having little to no regard for morals (ironic for a knight moralis) and laws when it comes to pursuing the greater good, so such adamant and frankly blind and foolish devotion to those laws would make her Doubt the consequences.
the whole silver night arc definitely could become her turning point, what with one of the sages turning out to be a brimhat too! she turns to "evil" and becomes the scapegoat yet again to make a possibly futile attempt at finding some sort of solution to their social dilemma. and, of course, she gathers trustworthy people around her along the way :]
and omg i can't believe i forgot to mention that!! but yes what initially inspired this au was grace being a teacher! i think it'd be fun if both him and his apprentice got "recruited". i was imagining abby (from the book) to be that apprentice and for some reason in my head she comes out somewhat similar to jujy
thank you so much for your curiosity and nice words!!! i hope you had a great day when you sent your ask and will have a greater one tomorrow :]
Very impressed they managed to compress two fairly busy chapters with many characters into one episode because that means that we got "a person's memories are a priceless treasure" and that scene in the same episode. Amazing work, thank you bug films
How exactly have you imagined your WHA and PJHM crossover? By that I mean, is it more of a fusion (where the PJHM cast are transported into the WHAverse) or does the WHA cast also still exist here? If it’s the second one, how do you think they’d interact?
i didn't actually think about that so thank you for the question!! i was drawing things for fun and giggles and accidentally came up with some lore so now it's actively spiraling out of control (i love this)
that said, it'd be SO FUN to have the wha cast just minding their own business somewhere in the same universe, so that's the version i'm inclined to go with! i think grace and qifrey would be vaguely aware of each other (the notorious great hall outcasts who opted to live As far away from it as possible, it could also be fun for them to meet during tests!)
i doubt they'd get many opportunities to connect, though, so i imagine it to be more of a fun little meta thing, having them interact. grace would SO join qifrey on bullying euini's teacher though oh my god, he's getting double teamed by qifrey's passive agression and grace's creative insults. no child is getting hurt on their watch
another curious intersection that comes to mind is, of course, the brimhat business. i saw an idea on twitter that moralis!stratt might turn brimhat due to her commitment to a cause (in case a threat of great level arises). and grace's rejection by the academia can be further explored and interpreted as him being rejected by the pointy hat witches on the whole because of his attitude, inventions and affiliation with a creature brought to life by forbidden magic
so a duo of stratt and grace as unconventional and separate brimhat fraction sounds delicious to me... and that potentially leads to interesting interactions with the wha cast, who understandably hold a hatred for any hats with brims...
#what if he kinda discovered/invented microscopes and using that found out about bacteria and stuff#so he wanted to research more with his magic#and discovered sometjing along the lines of 'hey i think this is how people get sick we could help with this'#but the elders (? sorry i dont remember the word i read the manga in german) tried to forbid him from researching further#since its too close to doing magic on livibg creatures#and than he got angry and the rest is history

YESSSS YESSS YOU GET IT !!!! i love this idea thank you!!!
i think this plays perfectly into that idea, he witched too close to the sun and he couldn't just let go of his ideals! maybe he was outcast by the sages first, after which he moved farther from the great hall, but he still was part of the witch society. and then, next to his middle-of-nowhere home he discovers a whole new sentient race. he isn't supposed to engage with the forbidden magic (they don't understand the creatures' language, so who knows that they might be thinking of?) and the knights are openly against that (if they ever discover him). so that would lead to him going independent, straying away from everything he's known as a pointy hat. but he doesn't seek to bring down the old rule, he just wants to learn, he just wants for science to help people.
it's like that fraction of witches from the tales of old, the ones who cast healing magic. except this is a witch who tried to conquer science. i think such a dichotomy would contribute nicely to wha's general narrative of "there's no easy choice, both fractions are sometimes right and sometimes wrong". like i think discovering a brimhat who is Not in on any of iguin and the gang's plans would challenge the protagonists of wha as well as their whole world structure

witch hat manga hurts so so bad but we have 2 stay strong bc ONE DAY we’re gonna get that first splash page fullbody orufrey crying hug drawn in crisp 4k by shirahama and it is gonna hit like a tractor trailer going 90 on a country backroad.
the crystalfox witch; crossover details and thoughts under cut!
ok so this got heavily out of hand because i am severely insane about both witch hat atelier and project hail mary. assigning stratt to knights moralis was simple, making grace a witch teacher was even simpler the rest though??
i came up with the idea to put foxes from his cardigan as embroidery of wha-canon crystal foxes onto his cape and it spiraled from there. he's called that because of his fascination with foxes, the cape and his specialty in light magic. he loves creating useless pretty spells with light magic and he managed to invent some contraptions before getting kicked out of the great hall for insulting one of the wise ones (idk why yet, but somebody out there has gotta be a staggering waste of silverwood ink)
however! i want to credit him with the invention of something like a magical microscope and a magical telescope, he experimented a lot with those light-focusing sigils. therefore i think it'd be really fun for him to explore tiny life and the far away stars. admittedly, on a medieval level (for setting reasons), but it feels appropriate to have him still be a scientist! he discovers stuff
i had no idea what to do with rocky for the longest time, but then it dawned on me. ancient witches experimented with golems and there had to have been some magic intended to make objects sentient. so what if one of those forbidden zones is still inhabited by those cursed by witches, namely a small tribe of sentient rocky creatures who developed a culture of their own. grace, a disgraced (haha) witch who lives away from the great hall and loves exploring, stumbles upon them and makes friends with one of them. shenanigans ensue as he's trying to hide a creature of forbidden magic from the knights moralis, protecting him and keeping his memory intact at the same time.
"could you hold this?" "could you sign this for me?"
closeups under the cut!
had such a blast drawing this and i'm really proud of how it came out! did the drawing itself traditionally and colored it digitally hehe at first it was just gonna be asa and anthony, but then i got an idea for a little then vs now to compare how far they've come 🥹
i personally enjoyed the ending, so i would appreciate no negativity towards it or other people's opinions in the comments/tag/etc, thank you!
Coco the Witch 🌱
Her dress is based on one of Shirahama's amazing illustrations, I wanted to make an Alphonse Mucha styled fanart!
I'm proud of all the details even though it took very long, WHA's art is so beautiful it makes me want to draw the best I can too! I'm planning on turning this into a gold foil print for Dokomi
