So when you tried to protect a girl, there were many things one might expect to happen. Receiving a jab to your gut was kind of low on the list of desirable or okay outcomes. Especially not of the variety that actually hurt. Damn, that girl packed more power than what you’d imagine, looking at her petite figure. That he wasn’t doubled over in pain was a combination of the fact that she had - just barely - missed the most tender part of his abdomen, and also from the fact that their position had hardly given her room to put full power into that jab. Probably.
"O-oi!" Letting his arms fall from around her waist, he took a step back and rubbed the back of his head as the sharp pain at his abdomen quickly faded into a slight soreness. "Well, I thought I saw something but…" Trailing off as crimson eyes gazed toward the murky depths again, not a single sign of life stirring any longer, he decided to leave it at that.
Instead, his attention turned to the so-called ‘stick’ she was referring to, a small smile that carried with it the weight of a certain pain through the melancholia and even bitterness it seemed to hold.
Had he been any other samurai, more prideful of what most considered their very soul, he might have taken insult at his bokuto being called a stick. But Gintoki was hardly your typical samurai, and his bokuto was just a telephone order that held no real meaning to it. A means to an end. Because a katana simply felt too heavy to carry around regularly, but he couldn’t bring himself to abandon his sword altogether. Not then, and not even after all this time.
In a movement that seemed almost wistful, he slid his bokuto back through the belt at his hips, turning to face the girl once again, all traces of his earlier sadness gone, replaced by an easy grin that never reached his eyes.
"This stick’s plenty, to protect what I need to protect." Hand tucked in through his yukata wearing an idiotic grin, this was the Sakata Gintoki that the world was more familiar with seeing.
Turning, he made as if to leave, glancing back at the girl with his pinky already up his nose.
"C’mon, let’s go get ya dried up. I’ll even let you get me another ice cream, to make up for earlier." Turning back to look ahead of him, her earlier words about having no joy to take echoed in his mind. Huh, seemed there was more to her story than just crude speech and violent words.
Is it just your imagination, or does his back somehow, against all odds, seem almost dependable?
