ok long rant about characters:

the idea for this came from my fascination with the zoldyck family, and how their arcs tend to run somewhat parallel. growing up they were all pitted against each other in an environment that encouraged abuse. yet slowly, one by one, each of the siblings was offered an out— a person who came along and showed them a different way of living. for Killua, that was Gon--- then, later on, Killua himself came back to help Alluka. Meanwhile, Illumi has started to go against his family's wishes post-Zodiac arc (we see him defying direct orders from his father to leave Alluka alone, seeking her power for himself), and I personally believe this is due to influence from his person—Hisoka. here we see the split: Killua and Alluka were rescued by someone who loved them, who wanted more than anything to see them happy and safe. Illumi (already a maniac) was influenced by an even worse maniac to selfishly seek power. but that's interesting to! it's still a departure from the constraints of his family. and then we have Kalluto, who, for reasons largely unknown, has aligned themself with the Phantom Troupe. they are-- at least physically-- no longer under the thumb of their parents. now, the only child remaining is Milluki... who, unfortunately, is too much of a shut-in to make any outside connections. maybe he'll get there one day, maybe not. in the meantime, i can bask in the tragedy of this anime assassin family by co-opting a song about the french revolution.

even longer rant about personal feelings:

sooo ok. i started working on this in the summer of 2022 during one of the worst times of my life, desperately needing some kind of distraction. i did the bulk of it that summer and fall, in between work and rehab and other bullshit.... and then i went through a few more major life changes,  my priorities shifted, and i dropped it. for like, a year. since then i've gone back periodically and added things/redone segments/ smoothed some shit out, but i always found myself kind of unhappy with one thing or another; such is the case when you work on something for a prolonged period of time, and your art changes a lot in between. every time i'd feel ok with something i'd go back a few months later and be like, "ew". the hurdles of being an art hobbyist. and then, last year, i started a new project, which kind of ramped up my passion for all things art and hxh. so naturally, i took another look at this oldass animatic and realized that, regardless of it being outdated to my personal style, it represents a period in my life where i really needed an outlet for creativity and i found it through animating a crazy family to the tune of a musical virtually no one remembers. and that has merit on its own. also shoutout @your-local-granny for being with me on this journey. thank you for your words of encouragement and unbridled enthusiasm, you're about 60% of the reason i'm even posting this at all. and thank you to all the lovely mutuals who've engaged with my stuff in the past and been very very nice about it. love y'all 💞
