I’m preeeeetty sure that he wore eyeliner to try and throw off the other players during practice, so just your typical MAF shenanigans. It’s also probably a reference to Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro

Eye Black is indeed used to reduce glare but you never wear it that close to the eye where it’s literally on your eye lids or in place of eyeliner. It goes under the eye and is a much wider application, honestly think like a tube of lipstick in consistency and texture.
