this was still so vile but the show wouldnt be the same w/o it . load bearing loser tongue scene without it the show falls apart
i honestly love this for them. they didnt even finish season 2
of course the simple explanation is "II2 and BFB were the current seasons when the osc made it to the online indie mainstream, alongside being the first 2 shows, so of course theyve influenced others"
but also like. i think its largely because of these two shows (BFDI as a whole, II2) have different approaches to developing a character that have a distinct Archetype.
BFDI tends to Build On Top. characters like Snowball are rude guys, who are given a chance to be viewed from a softer angle. SB never stopped being a rude strong man after caring about grassy, we just saw another facet of that. this is logic is also applicable to development of characters like Wheel ITFT and Bryce HfjONE, albeit they are Very distinct from the base archetype that snowball is. these characters never stop being the archetype, and that drives the narrative.
II2 tends to tear it down for materials and build something new. Knife notably stops being a jerk, because he has realized that he doesnt have to be. its not that less-of-a-jerk knife doesnt still have all the things that make him knife, hes still prickly and defensive. but hes chosen to stop being n asshole about it. he no longer fits his original archetype of "jerk who hurts people for fun". this can also apply to characters like Gold Ingot PPT2, who lose the initial archetype in favor of narratively-induced identity change.
both of these are also products of different writing priorities (with II2 prioritizing narrative plot, while BFDI prioritizes character plot) but like ive made my point already i think
hfjone is such a profoundly tragic piece of media and thats why i can never personally understand criticism of the ending. the forever human and fast death of airy leaves this empty dread, and this helpless closure to an arc we all expected to be mighty and overarching but was instead cradled in the hands of an equally tiny person in the grand scheme of things. its a bad stuff happens to good people piece of art and that sharp hollow cutoff was just what hfjone needed

ONE is amazing but I do wish people would stop recommending it as a beginner show. If you're getting into osc I feel like ONE might be one of the worst to start with actually. It relies a lot on the viewer already knowing common object show tropes, such as [object]y names and the reality show format, because the entire point is that it subverts those tropes and gags and tells a deeply sincere & profound story you almost never see in any other object show (minus things like TNM and II season 2). If you go in without any experience with the osc, you're just going to wonder why they used object characters instead of humans, and it can create the expectation of every object show telling a moving story, when really most of them are just silly fun.
