(Lies) in search of truth
one of the amazing things that the p5r narrative does is make ren’s biological family life ambiguous. whenever he talks about his past to his new friends in tokyo, it’s always fast forwarded or only about the parol. when he returns home we never really know what he’s returning to.
or do we? the game forces you to imagine your home as his home. what did you leave behind to serve your time? how do you feel about your parents, your friends from home, your former life? and how bitter sweet is it going to be to return home?
personally, i couldn’t help but feel disappointed returning home- to a place where i was unwelcomed and unwanted. especially after a life altering group of friends showed me what it was like to be appreciated and included. it makes me wonder…. how long would i even last living back home with my parents when tokyo held everything i could have wanted for a high school experience. goods and bads.
I love him sm
Hey. Pssst. All the third awakenings happened at the characters homes, but Akechis happened at LeBlanc implying that he feels like LeBlanc is his home.
a study in rivalry
A lot of people like to say 3rd Semester Goro is Akechi's true personality, and while there's a kernel of truth to that it misses the bigger picture. 3rd Semester Goro is an Akechi who has no purpose other than defeating Maruki. He thinks he's dead and he hates himself because of his failures and the realization he was playing right into Shido's hands all along. He's purposefully pushing the Thieves and Joker away and playing up the "Darkechi" side of him so they assume he's just a twisted psychopath and don't get attached. Because he doesn't want friends, because he thinks he doesn't deserve them, and especially because he doesn't want Joker to risk the true reality for him.
It just makes me mad when people say Goro is a psychopath and use the 3rd Sem as evidence he hates all the Thieves and Joker and just enjoys killing people. They're missing the subtext for the outward mask. Goro is never truly vulnerable in any scene other than in the Engine Room. That's the only time we see hints of his true self--his desire to be loved, his underlying wish to be Joker's friend. Those are real parts of him even in 3rd Semester, but he's wearing another mask, an apathetic, cruel one to push others away.
It's basically another version of the "Robin Hood is fake" argument people made before Royal came out and disproved them with Hereward. Both personas are a part of him, and both the detective prince mask and darkechi are aspects of himself, but both are used as masks to conceal the true self underneath. And I'm tired of people missing that so they can strawman him into a heartless psychopath who has no values.
well put^
I am also so tired of seeing people froth over “psychotic” akechi like this is his true or final form.
did you play the game? did you spend any time with him? did you watch him reveal it all in the engine room? how could you see this deeply complex character with a life time of abuse and neglect show you his duplicity and his true feelings, only for you to focus so black and white on his actions in a reality he never wanted to be in? it feels shallow and very 2014 fuck a serial killer to me.
we do not get the pleasure of seeing the true Akechi too often. the narrative so beautifully maps out his redemption and a path to a second chance (not the artificial one maruki offers) in the reality we finish the game in. we do not get to see who he grows into, how his relationship with the pt and joker changed him. he hasn’t had time to reflect and live authentically. in fact, that is his goal going into the real reality. to not live under anyones will but his own. fitting of the justice arcana, no?
i think it’s vitally important to remember that he was a child with no support, a child with no love, and a child when his father used him. he was a child throughout the game. he is unfinished and, luckily, actually able to start fresh with no one, no past, holding him back.
i hope we get to see more of his life eventually and that he gets the help and support he deserves after a traumatic life.
