During childhood and early adulthood, my parents instilled a lot of shame in me about many things about myself. During my healing during for many years, I believed that my healing was dependent on convincing my parents that those things they say about me are not true. That talking about me that way (and me thinking about myself that way) is harmful to me. And I would always hit up against a wall because my parents havenāt done the healing, they havenāt developed the emotional maturity, and their self-defence mechanisms are too true for them to accept the harmful ways in which their words affect me. And Iām slowly starting to understand that the hurt is not malicious. In their minds, they truly believe their comments are helpful to me. And Iām realizing that the only person I need to convince that these harmful and shameful narratives about myself are untrue is⦠me. Iām working on reframing the way I talk to and about myself. Challenging narratives, trying a new approach to how I see myself. Itās very slow progress but I finally feel like Iām on the right path.
